FOREWORDThis publication includes all of the written replies issued between the indicated dates by the ASME

Staff on behalf of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Committee to inquiries concerninginterpretations of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.These interpretations are not a part of theAddendaor the Code.

These replies are taken verbatim from the original letters, except for a few typographical andeditorial corrections made for the purpose of improved clarity. In some instances, a review of theinterpretation revealed a need for corrections of a technical nature. In these cases, a revised reply,bearing the original Interpretation Number with the suffix R is presented. Following these revisedreplies, new interpretations, and revisions to them issued during the same 6-month period, areassigned Interpretation Numbers in chronological order. Interpretations applying to more than oneCode Seaion appear with the replies pertaining o each affected Section.ASME procedures provide for reconsideration of these interpretations when or if additionalinformation is available which the inquirer believes might affect the interpretation. Further, personsaggrieved by an interpretation may appeal to the cognizant ASME committee or subcommittee. Asstated in the Statement of Policy in the Code documents, ASME does not approve, certify,rate, or endorse any item, construction, proprietary device, or activity.

Question: It appears that the hardness requirement for Type 316 strain-hardened material inTable 1 of Spec. SA-479 is in error. i s the requirement proper and intended and, if not, may it beignored?

Reply: The ASTM subcommittee which has jurisdiction over the ASTM specification hasdetermined that the hardness requirement for Type 316 strain-hardened material in Table 1 of thespecification is an error and was not intended. Action has been taken to delete the hardnessspecification from the ASTM specification. Hardness requirements for strain-hardened material arebeing developed in ASTM.

Section li is also of the opinion that the requirement is an error since the minimum tensile andhardness requirements are in conflict. Action is being taken to delete the hardness requirement fromSA-479. Section li s of the opinion that this hardness requirement should not apply.

Question (1): May the tempering operation for SA-540 material supplied in quenched andtempered condition be performed in more than one cycle in order to obtain the required mechanicalproperties?Reply (1): Yes. It i s permissible to perform the tempering operation in more than one cycle.Question (2): in the case performing tempering as per Question 11, would each cycle be

considered a new heat treatment, therefore allowing only one quenching and three tempering cyclesto be permitted?Reply 2): No, Paragraph 14.1 limits heat treatment to three complete quenching and temperingcycles, regardless of the number of tempering steps applied in each cycle.
