Accessory Power
Product designers may now simplifypower supply connections for electrical equipment accessories andsub-systems using universally acceptedIEC 60320-2-2 outlets and plugconnectors. Accessory power stripsoffer an inlet, circuit protection, an on-off switch, and four or more outlets.
There are three main reasons for specifying IEC 60320-2-2 componentsfor accessory power connections:
• The IEC 60320-2-2 component family makes it possible to control power to accessoriesthrough the main appliance.
• The IEC 60320-2-2 component system is generally accepted for use throughout the world.
• Country-specific plugs and out-lets are not needed for accessorypower connections. For example,it is no longer necessary to useNorth American plugs and outlets on equipment destinedfor sale in the U.S. and Canada,or British plugs and outlets onequipment destined for sale inthe United Kingdom. (The mainsconnection does have to use acountry specific plug, however). This makes it easier to buildequipment that can be soldthroughout the world with only minor changes.
The basic building blocks in an accessory power distribution systemconstructed with IEC 60320-2-2 components include the outlet, a plug-connector or a cordset with amolded plug connector on one end and a connector on the other. In addition, accessory power modules and power strips are available with an inlet and multiple outlets.
The most commonly used accessorypower system is rated for use at 10Amps internationally and 15 Amps in North America. However, a second
system is provided in the IEC standardswith current ratings of 16 Amps internationally and 20 Amps in NorthAmerica. See Figure 1 for the outlinedrawings with the proper IEC references. (Note that Class IIungrounded devices are also covered in the IEC standards but they are notcommonly used and are not covered in this brochure.)
Accessory Power StripsThe accessory power strips are usually specified when one of the following conditions is present::
• The main system power will be controlled from the Accessory Power Strip.
• The main box in the system does not have sufficient panelspace for an accessory power module.
• The organization configuring the system is buying off-the-shelf“boxes” and overall power control must be added.
All of the Interpower™ Accessory Power Strips are enclosed in a steelcase and are intended for use in professional quality industrial equipment (See Figure 3).The fourposition Accessory Power Strip offers
a simple re-settable supplementary circuit protector. The six and eightposition Accessory Power Strips include a combination powerswitch/supplementary circuit protector.
Specialty Accessory Power StripsShould your requirements dictate anAccessory Power Strip with features different than those included a customdesigned special accessory power stripmay be ordered. Contact our CustomerService Department to discuss yourspecifications.
Accessory Power Cords and CordsetsWe also offer power cords and cordsets that will allow connectionbetween any of our Accessory PowerStrips and the power mains outlet any-where in the world. Our standardAccessory Power Cordsets or JumperCords used to connect equipment tothe Accessory Power Strip are normallyavailable from stock.
