INTERNET SAFETY
There are basically two dangers associated with visiting WEB SITES!You may come across material that is
sexual, hateful, violent, or inappropriateWeb sites often ask you for personal
information and use that information to locate you or use your information for their gain.
RISKS involved in the use of the INTERNET
1. Meeting Someone Online
Many kids can turn up missing or molested do to an online contact. NEVER agree to meet with someone you met in a chat room. “Luring” is the term for online behavior that leads to
these meetings. Luring is illegal.
Do not chat in unsupervised chat rooms.Never give out personal information in a chat room.Use software to block sensitive personal information while in chat rooms
2. Inappropriate Material
Some places are sexual in nature, contain violent or hateful materials, advocate weapons, harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs.
3. If you Read it ONLINE
All the information on the Internet is not TRUE.Understand the difference between reliable
and unreliable sources.
4. Putting Others in Jeopardy
Be sure NOT to post private information about the family or friends on the Internet.
Threatening and harassing material on Web pages, chat rooms or in newsgroups is illegal.
5. Setting up OWN Web Sites
Any web site set up can be seen by anyone visiting the site.Do not post personal information, photos,
or anything else that could identify you.Do not post any material that could be
offensive to other people.Do not use other people’s material without
permission.
6. E-mail
There are two dangers to Email:SPAM – unsolicited commercial e-mail
(electronic junk mail)Viruses attached to e-mails that are
opened.
7. Newsgroups
Newsgroups are where people exchange ideas, facts, photos, etc.However, newsgroups that have
extensions with “Alt” are full of material that contain sex materials, violence, and inappropriate items.
Remember anything you type can be read by anyone.
9. PASSWORDS
Keep your passwords private.
Use only your Log-in name or email address when chatting or sending email.

Domain Name Extensions
All Web Sites contain an address to allow you to find that site. These are called the URL address and they end with a three letter extension telling you what they might involve. .org – organization web sites .com – commercial web sites .edu – education web sites .gov – government web sites .mil – military web sites .net – network administration sites
Domain Names & Countries
The URL address also might include information about a particular country: ca – Canada au – Australia se – Sweden jp – Japan uk – United Kingdom de – Germany
Therefore, you might not need to look up these sites unless you read German or Japanese.
E-Mail Safety
Be careful opening your E-mail unless you know who sent it to you. Many e-mails may have viruses attached to them. Once you open the e-mail (unless you have a virus software program running on your computer) you might find your computer is History!!!
