The Internet has many uses that can be beneficial. Tell how the Internet can be used to help you accomplish the following tasks.

• Plan a birthday party

• Complete a project for school

• Study the Bible

• Talk with friends

• Share pictures with a family member who lives in another state

• Find homework help.

Do at least two of these things.

This is what I did:

Task 1Complete the following task.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ GIRL GUARDS

Name three other tasks the Internet can be used for.

Online safety means there are certain types of information you should be careful about sharing on the Internet. Tell at least six things you should never share online. Make a poster, multimedia presentation, or video to show you know this, or make a list to share with your leader.

Task 2Complete the following task.

Brainstorm to come up with as many answers as you can to these two questions:

• How can cell phones help you stay safe?

• What are ways cell phones are dangerous?

* Log on to http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2013/ Teens-and-Tech.aspx?utm_source=twitterfeed& utm_medium=twitterIn to read the study.

3. WHEN BUYING A NEW CELL PHONE, MOST PEOPLE WANT PLANS THAT ALLOW UNLIMITED CALLS AND TEXTS.

Phone companies offer many safety features on their calling plans as well. Interview sales people from the major cell phone companies in your area to learn about safety features they offer with their plans.

Things to ask:

• What filters and parental controls are available?

• Are there extra fees for those filters or controls?

• Will the salesperson help you to set the controls?

Mind MattersComplete at least TWO of the following tasks.

Discuss the pamphlet “Sex and Cell Phones” with your parents or guardians. After you read and discuss the pamphlet, work together to come up with a “safe-use agreement.” There is a sample agreement in the pamphlet, or work with your parents to come up with one that’s right for your family. Sign the agreement and show a copy to your leader.

Go to www.scd.org/family_youth_young_adult/PDFs/icare%20Sex%20and%20Cell%20Phones.pdf to download and print a copy of the pamphlet.

Task 3Complete the following task.

1. INVITE AN EXPERT TO TALK TO YOUR GROUP ABOUT INTERNET SAFETY.

Your local police department, the public safety office at a community college, or high school counseling center may know of good resource people for this task.

2. HOW EMBARRASSING WOULD IT BE TO FORGET THE PASSWORD YOU SET UP FOR AN EMAIL ADDRESS OR WEBSITE?

Most people use passwords that are easy for them to remember. Did you use a name, your birth date, a sports team or the name of your favorite pet?

The problem with doing this is that it is easy for someone to guess your password.

Play a game of 20 Questions with a friend or family member to see if you can guess their password. How easy or hard was it to figure it out? Make sure you use passwords that would be difficult for even your best friend to guess.

3. A STUDY BY PEW RESEARCH CENTER* SHOWS THAT 80% OF TEENS HAVE CELL PHONES.

Many parents believe that giving their teenagers access to cell phones will help them stay safe and connected.

Log on to www.oseh.umich.edu/pdf/ergonomics/Texting%20and%20Smartphone%20Ergonomics.pdf to find tips to help you keep from hurting your hands when texting.

2. STUDIES SHOW THAT SLEEPING WITH YOUR CELL PHONE ON INTERFERES WITH YOUR REST.

If you usually sleep with yours on, try an experiment. Keep a sleep diary to show how you rest for two weeks. For the first week keep your phone on as you normally do. The second week, turn your phone off before you go to bed.

This is what I learned:

How many in a month?

Does all that texting hurt you? Go online to find out how texting can hurt your hands.

This is what I learned:

This is the website where I found the information:

The Bible teaches important lessons about how you should conduct yourself to be a good Christian example. Those lessons apply anytime you are online.

1. READ PSALM 34:13-14; EPHESIANS 4:29; AND MARK 12:31.

What do these verses teach that you can apply to cyber bullying?

What should you do if you or a friend is being bullied online?

2. READ PROVERBS 22:1, ECCLESIASTES 7:1a; AND 1 CORINTHIANS 4:1.

What do these verses say about protecting your reputation?

What can you do to protect your reputation while you are online?

3. TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE HUNDREDS OF ONLINE FRIENDS WHO YOU KEEP UP WITH, BUT NEVER ACTUALLY SPEAK TO.

Instead, you spend time texting, chatting online, and posting on Facebook, without having real conversations with any of those friends.

Does the virtual communication habit affect the way you communicate with God? Do you listen to Him? Can you text in your prayers?

Write out a plan for how you will put it into practice.

The following verses tell you to spend time listening, really listening to God. Read the following Scripture and underline any parts that tell you how to put it into practice.

James 1:22-24, 27 (MSG) says: “Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.

Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.”

Look at what you underlined. Which part do you need to work on the most?

2. TEACH A CLASS ABOUT INTERNET SAFETY TO A GROUP OF SUNBEAMS OR EXPLORERS.

When preparing your presentation, remember that because they are younger than you, what they do online and their online interests may be different from yours. Research to find websites that teach about cyber safety and netiquette that will be fun and of interest to kids in first grade through five grade.
