INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED NURSES: ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING STANDARDS Revised: May 2, 2013 Page 1 of 1 INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED NURSES ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING STANDARDS For Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta: Applicants for registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) must provide evidence of language proficiency in English. The four (4) language proficiency criteria are: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. This requirement may be met through successfully completing one of the following test: Option English Test Passing Score Contact to Write Test Notes 1. CELBAN – Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses Listening: 10 Reading: 8 Writing: 7 Speaking: 8 Canadian English Language Assessment Services (CELAS) Centre 400-123 Main Street Winnipeg, MB R3C 1A3 1-204-945-0588 www.celban.org It is recommended that applicants first complete a CELBAN self- assessment readiness test. 2. IELTS – International English Language Testing System Academic Version only Listening: 7.5 Reading: 6.5 Writing: 7.0 Speaking: 7.0 *The above scores take the Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) into consideration International English Language Testing System Alberta: 1-403-543-7300 www.ielts.org Once on the IELTS website click on Test Takers/Find my nearest test centre/select by location/choose your country, then choose your test centre. Carefully review the following policies: All applicants whose first language is not English are required to successfully demonstrate English language competence. However, applicants who provide evidence of completing four (4) years of full-time study in English from the following list of countries are not required to provide language proficiency: Australia, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States and Canada The language proficiency requirement must be completed prior to writing the national examination to ensure that candidates are not disadvantaged on the examination. Applicants may choose to complete one of the two tests listed above. Combining scores from more than one test or more than one sitting of the same test will not be accepted. Applicants, whose test results become more than two years old, at any time during the application process or prior to registration, will be required to provide updated test results. Tests results must be originals; these may be submitted by the applicant or the testing facility. (copies not accepted)
