This book addresses the question of where are the women located in contemporary diplomacy and international negotiation. The volume brings together a wide range of established International Relations scholars from different parts of the world to write original contributions, which analyse where the women are positioned in diplomacy and international negotiation. The contributions are rich and global in scope with cases ranging from Brazil, Japan, Turkey, Israel, Sweden to the UN, Russia, Norway and the European Union.

The Gender of Informal Politics Janet Elise Johnson

The book argues that the primary political obstacle holding women back in the twenty-first century is a bait and switch promising but simultaneously undercutting gender equality. Through a comparison of Russia and Iceland, the book shows how this revised form of male dominance came about, how it constrains feminisms, and how activists are beginning to fight back. It argues that while feminist movements have made it harder for most countries to maintain formal rules discriminating against women, economic liberalization strengthened male-dominated elites in informal institutions. These elites offer women prominent roles as policymakers and in non-governmental organizations, but then box them in with little room to represent women’s interests.

The book traces the struggles over the institutions of political representation in Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on the factors that have held women back over the post-communist period, as well as on the growing evidence for change throughout the region. This comparative study of Europe’s new democracies argues that these puzzles are best understood as questions about male dominance – that is, about the mechanisms that sustain, or, alternatively, change long-established patterns of male over-representation in politics over time. The author covers six EU member states – Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia – during the period 1990-2016.

The book explores how the UK press constructs and represents women leaders drawn from three professional spheres: politics, business, and the mass media. Despite significant career progress made by women leaders in these professions, many British newspapers continue to portray these women in stereotyped and essentialist ways: the extent to which this occurs tending to correspond with the political affiliation and target readership of the newspaper. The author analyses news media articles through three fresh perspectives: first, Kanter’s women leader stereotypes, second, a feminist agenda spectrum and third, a new ‘reflexive’ approach based on Feminist Poststructuralist Discourse Analysis.

Throughout Africa, growing numbers of women are coming together and making their voices heard, mobilizing around causes ranging from democracy and land rights to campaigns against domestic violence. In countries such as Senegal and Tunisia, women have made major gains in their struggle for equal rights, and in Liberia and South Sudan women have been at the forefront of efforts to promote peace and reconciliation. While some of these movements have been influenced by international feminism and external donors, African women themselves are also increasingly shaping the global struggle for women’s rights, particularly in areas such as political representation and peace-building. Composed of works by African authors who are themselves members of the activist groups, this collection represents the only comprehensive and up-to-date overview of women’s movements in contemporary Africa.

The book captures the panorama of women governing around the world. Even though the modern era marks history’s greatest advancements for women, worldwide they hold fewer than 30 percent of decision-making positions and are often missing from negotiating tables where policies are made and conflicts resolved. The opening chapters present trends and context for studying women in public service by focusing on path-setters across the globe, the status of women in the world’s executive and legislative bodies, and their participation in public service across several nations. Later chapters examine power, leadership and representation of women in public service, with several chapters looking at women governing from a regional perspective in the Middle East, Sub Sahara Africa, Latin America, and China. The final chapter presents empirical evidence that shows how policies to increase women’s representation in the public arena reduce gender inequality more than any other policy intervention.

This book is a unique exploration into the gendered politics of the economic crisis in Europe. It focuses, firstly, on the changes in the political and economic decision-making institutions and processes of the EU and their consequences for gender equality policy. Finally, it addresses feminist and intersectional struggles and resistances against neoliberal, conservative and racist politics across Europe. Di Sarcina has dedicated her doctoral and postdoctoral research to the origins and evolution of the gender question in the European Economic Community (EEC)/European Union (EU). Her research covers multiple sources, some of which are stored at the HAEU(fonds: BAC – CEE/CEEA Commission; FDE – Femmes d’Europe; FDLV – Fausta Deshormes La Valle; ME – Mouvement européen). Her work highlights the role of the European institutions – which have had a decisive role to play in the acquis communautaire on equal pay and equal treatment between men and women, gender mainstreaming and the definition of European gender citizenship – in creating a greater awareness of gender issues within the EEC/EU.

A Life: A Memoir by Simone Veil Simone Veil

In this memoir, Simone Veil describes in vivid detail how her idyllic childhood came to an abrupt end in 1944, when her family was deported to the concentration camps. Veil survived Auschwitz–Birkenau and Bergen–Belsen, but her mother, father, and brother all died in captivity. With undeterred resolve, Simone Veil went on to study law and political science. She later became the minister of health in France, where she fought to legalize abortion, prompting the head of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada to criticize Veil's presence at the sixtieth anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation, writing that she was to be held responsible for a mass murder of human life far exceeding that of the German National Socialists by legalizing and promoting abortion.

Carla Del Ponte won international recognition as Switzerland's attorney general when she pursued cases against the Sicilian mafia. In 1999, she answered the United Nations' call to become the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda. In her new role, Del Ponte confronted genocide and crimes against humanity head-on, struggling to bring to justice the highest-ranking individuals responsible for massive acts of violence in Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Kosovo.
