INTRODUCTION

Hepatitis B and C affect more than 320 million people globally. It is the primary cause of liver cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the world. Around 257 million people are chronically infected with HBV, and approximately 2 people die each minute from Hepatitis B. An estimated 71 million people (globally, 1%) are chronically infected with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV), resulting in nearly 399 000 deaths annually. Despite these facts, only 20% of HCV-infected people are diagnosed and only a small portion of diagnosed patients enter the cascade of care to receive treatment.

Key issues to be addressed are how to translate research outcomes into public health policy and practice to meet the 2030 elimination targets. During this meeting, experts in viral hepatitis from around the globe will examine current evidence on how to implement programs that improve the prevention of viral hepatitis, and increase the number of people accessing testing and treatment.

Involving community organizations, researchers, public health practitioners and clinicians, the program includes practical examples of innovative intervention studies, country elimination programs and novel funding mechanisms for testing and treatment, all focusing on meeting the 2030 targets.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

TARGET AUDIENCEHealthcare professionals, including but not limited to clinicians, rese-archers, policy makers, virologists, pharmacologists, industry represen-tatives, and those looking beyond the individual patient and who would like to be involved in the elimination of viral hepatitis.

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF PATICIPANTS 100-120 participants

The field of viral hepatitis treatment is undergoing major changes and is on the verge of a paradigm shift. There are great hopes for the eliminatin of viral hepatitis. Many new treatment options are becoming available through the introduction of Direct Acting Antivirals (DAAs) and are pro-viding great hopes for decreasing the burden of disease and simplifying the treatment of viral hepatitis.

The International Viral Hepatitis Elimination Meeting (IVHEM) is a global forum for the exchange of practical experiences in the translation of di-agnostic and therapeutic advances into broad applications that accelera-te progress toward elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat. The program features outstanding international experts that address strategies regarding testing & screening, care & cure, prevention, and innovative models to finance elimination strategies.

Meeting objectives

The objectives of this meeting are to:• Provide a forum for knowledge exchange and discussion of practical

experiences of advances in diagnostics and clinical management of viral hepatitis.

• Provide a toolbox for practical application of research & development, for evidence based policy making

• Facilitate cross-disciplinary discussion on barriers and challenges to achieve the elimination of viral hepatitis

Learning objectives

After attending this program participants will be able to:• Identify the roadblocks and the challenges in implementing viral

hepatitis elimination strategies• Recognize the needs from a public health perspective and respond

to these needs by reshaping their policy making approaches• Further develop new or already existing foundations for political

commitment, national planning and program improements.• Translate the latest research and technologies into clinical policy

and practice for delivering adequate continuum of hepatitis services.

PROGRAM

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThis 1.5 day meeting consists of invited lectures, roundtable discussions, abstract-driven presentations and poster-viewing sessions. The program mainly involves speakers with hands-on experience in eliminating viral hepatitis in a certain setting. As a result, IVHEM is able to provide a toolbox for practical experiences of advances in diagnostics and clinical management of viral hepatitis.

FORMATThis 1.5 day meeting consists of invited lectures, roundtable discussions and abstract-driven presentation. In order to ensure an interactive workshop setting, much time is allocated to discussion.

Previous meeting topics

• Monitoring: Finding the missing millions – HBV• Monitoring: Finding the missing millions – HCV• Linkage to Care (both in HBV and HCV) - How can we keep patients in the care continuum?• Surveillance (surveillance in countries that are eliminating, what do they do with resistant cases?)• Public health (local communities versus global health, public’s awareness of public health challenges, health systems)

ASSESSMENT

To assess the meeting, Virology Education provides each delegate with a detailed feedback form to assess the speakers, whether or not the meeting objectives were met, their intent to change, the rationale behind their motivation to attend, the general logistics of the meeting, and more.

All the questions are then fully analyzed and a comprehensive report is created and shared with the committee members. These reports help us to better understand our delegates’ needs and how to improve the meeting in the future.

For a maximum response rate, we invite the chairs of each session to encourage the participants to take a few minutes and complete the feedback forms. We are also introducing a web-based application to allow participants access to the feedback forms electronically.

Conference participation grantsThe conference participation grants (CPG) provide healthcare professionals with the opportunity to attend a conference they would otherwise be unable to attend due to financial restrictions. All applications include a CV, a motivation letter, and potentially an abstract (requirements vary depending on the workshop). These are submitted via an independent CPG portal and are evaluated against the assessment criteria using a robust, impartial and independent peer review process. This process will ensure that the most qualified candidates will receive CPGs.

The grants are supported by the financial contributions allocated by the sponsor, who has no control, influence, or involvement in the selection process of the CPG candidates whatsoever. Priority is given to applicants who have actively participated in original research or scientific work that is being presented at the meeting and/or those who will profit most from participating in order to improve their daily clinical management.

These grants help defray costs for registration, travel and accommodation for delegates and foster their ability to form valuable professional networks and develop vital collaborations. Conference participation grant applications will be solicited, selected and awarded by an expert Grant Review Committee.

Please note that the TITANIUM, PLATINUM and GOLD support levels will reduce the costs for conference participation grants.

LEARNING ASSESSMENT METHODAccreditation We aim to submit an application to the EACCME® for CME accreditation of this event.
