International Titanium Association was established in 1984 with the mission of connecting the public interested in using titanium with specialists from across the globe who may offer sales and technical assistance.
We accomplish this by:
• Hosting the Titanium Resource Center;
• Educating through hands on workshops & online seminars;
• Producing the TITANIUM Conference series in the US and in Europe;
• Providing assistance in the form of accurate and timely information to potential designers, fabricators and end users of titanium, involved in generating, producing or disseminating information about titanium;
• Sponsoring the Titanium Online Library dedicated to preserving past conference proceedings from the World Titanium and annual TITANIUM Conferences;

Academic Poster Session Highlights
Grad Students’ R&D in Industrial Apps
Among the missions of the International Titanium Association (ITA) are the promotion of new
applications and material processing technologies for titanium and the recognition of research projects that contribute to these advances. Th ese goals oft en intersect in academia, and at the Sorrento Conference this May, the ITA Education Committee welcomed fi ve graduate students’ Research and Development exhibits.
Students presented Posters covering work on titanium machining, titanium jewelry creation and the use of titanium in race car components. Th e event also allowed them to take advantage of industry networking opportunities with the more than 400 conference attendees. Th e ITA sponsored their conference registrations and travel expenses.
“Th e Student Poster contest provides a unique and creative way for aspiring young engineers and technologists to present detail of their work to the broader professional ITA membership,” said Graham Walker, AMETEK-Reading Alloys and Co-Chair of the ITA Education Committee. “Th e resulting exposure on both sides oft en leads to mutual further interest and communication, and helps nurture the next generation of future leaders into our industry.”
TWO APPROACHES FOR IMPROVEMENTS IN TITANIUM MACHINING
Elio Chiappini and Stefano Tirelli presented two “complementary strategies for improving machinability and profi tability of titanium and its alloys.” Th ey included both simulation and experimental activities in their project. “We consider the research results very interesting for industrial applications in titanium manufacturing.”
Because titanium is hard to cut, due
to its low thermal conductivity, alloys (specifi cally Ti6-4 in this research) require relatively low cutting speeds to avoid massive tool wear. Tirelli’s investigation compared turning with traditional oil-water coolant to cryogenic machining, with liquid nitrogen as the cooling medium. “Th e results showed that cryogenic machining is able to increase tool life with respect to wet cutting,” Tirelli said. It also reduces environmental impacts.
In addition, current low cutting speeds reduce profi tability in machining Ti6-4. Chiappini’s work focused on cutting techniques that enhance the material removal rate. “A strategy of higher cutting depths could be used if not for the vibration caused by regenerative chatter,” he noted. His research examined the chatter suppression method of Sinusoidal Spindle Speed Variation (SSSV), which uses a non-constant cutting speed. Th e
eff ects of this technique on the tool were examined using Finite Element simulations and experimentally validated in dry turning tests. Compared with Constant Speed Machining, SSSV fosters better tool wear mechanisms.
Chiappini and Tirelli emphasized that the cryogenic and SSSV machining techniques could be implemented simultaneously and the Finite Element Method simulations they ran could be useful for predicting thermal and mechanical loads.
“Th e ITA Conference presented us with the occasion to meet experts and businesspeople from the titanium production sector, enlarging the possibilities of partnership,” Tirelli and Chiappini observed. Both hold Master’s degrees from Politecnico de Milano and pursue their research activities at the MUSP Laboratory, Piacenza, Italy.

Dynamet Technology, Inc., Burlington, Massachusetts announced that demand for its titanium alloy matrix composite CermeTi®-10 liners for steel shot sleeves (the cylinders that deliver molten aluminum to the die cavity) used in die casting aluminum alloys has signifi cantly increased in the past year.* Th e aluminum die casting industry has long
recognized that aluminum soldering (the adherence of aluminum to the surface of H13 tool steel) is a major cause of shot sleeve failure and a critical technical barrier to increased productivity and reduced energy consumption by the industry. Th e use of coatings and ceramic liners are presently the main methods of improving the resistance of H13 shot sleeves to aluminum soldering. However both have major drawbacks. Coatings provide some protection against soldering but are thin and brittle and therefore tend to fl ake especially at the impingement zone. Ceramic shot sleeve liners are resistant to aluminum soldering but are brittle and prone to failure when subjected to thermal or mechanical shock.
Since they were introduced over 10 years ago CermeTi®-lined shot sleeves have provided signifi cant benefi ts to aluminum die casters in meeting the requirements for high quality aluminum components, especially for the demanding parts for the automotive industry. Th e CermeTi® titanium metal matrix
composite material, produced by Dynamet Technology, protects the
sleeve from the major causes of shot sleeve failure such as aluminum
soldering, heat checking, excess wear and erosion from hot metal
impingement. Th ere are more than 20 casting machines in plants in the US
and overseas that now use titanium matrix composite lined shot sleeves as standard equipment, operating with at least 6 diff erent shot sleeve diameter sizes. Th e plants using these sleeves report up to 20 times longer shot sleeve life, 3 times longer plunger tip life, reduced maintenance time, fewer defects and decreased lubrication requirements. Also the heat retention characteristics of the composite liners – lower thermal conductivity and higher heat capacity – minimize premature solidifi cation in the shot sleeve resulting in improved casting quality and energy effi ciency.CermeTi® is a titanium alloy matrix
composite (MMC) designed to provide the wear resistance of a ceramic with the toughness and machinability of a metal. Th e material is a titanium alloy reinforced with particles of titanium carbide ceramic. Th e titanium carbide particulate imparts increased hardness, stiff ness and wear resistance to the strong and tough titanium metal matrix.

The Grant Committee evaluates applications for the Titanium Applications Development award annually. A prize of $20,000 is presented to the winner at the annual TITANIUM USA conference.

The Grant Committee works jointly with Scholarship America to provide Academic Scholarships on behalf of the ITA. Up to 4 individual scholarships are awarded each Fall supporting STEM majors.

The current scope of the Safety Committee include:
• Disseminate existing published resources to suppliers and users of titanium products through Titanium Today magazine, committee meetings, ITA website and TITANIUM Conferences.
• Provide referral list of safety related services & products through the Titanium Resource Center.
• Develop on-line awareness programs from existing published resources.
• Encourage safety committee members to participate in other organization standards and compliance groups.
• Host regular meetings where the industry may have a forum to discuss occurrences and to discuss how to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
All ITA Members are invited and encouraged to participate in Safety Committee activities.
TITANIUM CONFERENCE SERIES
The TITANIUM conference series offers insights into the current state of the industry as well as efficient, high-value networking opportunities not available anywhere else for titanium producers, OEMs, distributors, fabricators and vendors offering services to the titanium industry.

WOMEN IN TITANIUM
Mission: The mission of the WiT committee is two-fold: To develop a networking group of collegial women presently in the titanium industry; and to promote, attract, and encourage high school and college women to enter the titanium industry.
Objective: To contribute to the growth of the overall titanium industry by providing mentoring, collegial and networking opportunities for women within the titanium industry and to take part in programs which advance gender equality in STEM fields for high school and college women.
The current scope of the WiT Committee includes:• Professional Development: Including but not limited to planned meetings offering
lectures and industry related tours.
• Education: Offering exclusive WiT sponsored workshops encouraging discussion relating to applied titanium metallurgy. Academic scholarships or mentoring opportunities will be offered to strengthen efforts on gender and diversity-related issues in the fields of STEM.
• Mentorship: Organized networking events will be held in Europe, Asia & USA.
• Leadership: WiT will join programs such as the National Girls Collaborative Project providing girl-serving STEM programs.
• WiT will strive to create a partnership with other like-minded organizations.
