Uniquely amongst WSRs, Gold Coast has the backing of the Queensland Government, at both state and local level, who have installed a Surf Management Plan as the authoritative document that oversees the WSR and is managed by a Local Stewardship Committee that has direct input into Council as a matter of law. No other WSR has this dynamic administrative mechanism.

As the 8th WSR, Gold Coast joins Ericeria in Portugal, Malibu in California, Santa Cruz in Califonia, Todos Santos in Mexico, Huanchaco in Peru, Punta da Lobos in Chile and Manly-Freshwater in Sydney, Australia.
