Around Lancaster City, coast and countrysideStudents tell us they love living in Lancaster because it offers the perfect combination of lively city living with easy access to beautiful English countryside and stunning coastline. Whatever your interests, there’s so much to explore in and around the city and local area.

CityLancaster was recently voted one of the most vibrant cities in the UK and you will soon discover why. There’s so much to do here and the city is small enough to explore on foot (and just a short bus journey from campus).

Set amongst lovely Georgian architecture, the city’s commercial and cultural centres offer cafés, cinemas, restaurants, pubs, small boutiques, well-known high street shops and a local market. If you enjoy the arts there’s a great music scene, theatre and an annual literature festival.

Away from the commercial centre you can discover the city’s fascinating history. The ancient castle dates back to the 12th century and there are several local museums to visit.

NightlifeIf you want a night out with your friends there are plenty of pubs and bars where you can relax and have fun. The Students’ Union own and run The Sugarhouse nightclub in the city centre. The club is exclusively for students.

“It’s great experiencing the culture of the UK as well as the cultures of your other classmates. Lancaster is very beautiful and perfect for scenic walks and shopping.”

Studying at LancasterWe believe that students succeed and enjoy their studies when they take responsibility for their learning and have the opportunity to widen their knowledge beyond a core subject. That’s why we encourage you to make your own course decisions and offer flexible study options, while providing a solid support structure to guide you throughout.

Flexible study approachLancaster University offers a flexible approach to undergraduate study, particularly in your first year. We are one of the few universities in the UK that encourages students to pursue other academic interests by allowing them to study additional minor subjects alongside a major subject. Our flexible approach to undergraduate study is a great opportunity for you to pursue your academic interests alongside your main subject area. Not only will you benefit from a wider education, this style of study also encourages independence and autonomy – something employers look for when they are recruiting graduate candidates. We divide academic study into two sections: • Part 1 (Year 1)• Part 2 (Years 2, 3 and sometimes 4)

In Part 1 you can take up to three subjects. In Part 2 you specialise in one subject (Single Major) or a combination of two or three subjects (Combined Major).

Even if you are following a Single Major degree, you can often take courses from other subjects throughout your time here. Some subjects (outside of your main area of study) may have specific entry requirements.

Which degree? Make the right decision Students at other universities sometimes feel that they have chosen the wrong degree by their second or third year. Studying a selection of academic disciplines in your first year allows you the opportunity to switch the focus of your degree as your interests evolve and your career aspirations develop.

You will have the chance to follow a structured study programme or the freedom to devise a programme to meet your own needs.

Our commitment to youWe’re committed to supporting you during your studies to ensure you do well and achieve the grades you need. We provide a minimum number of contact hours per week and give you timely feedback on your work. Seminar groups during the International Foundation Year have around 20 students. This continues when you progress to the University, with around 15 students in seminars during your degree programme.

“I would definitely recommend other students to come here as the learning experience is very exciting and innovative. The course at Lancaster University International Study Centre offers an in-depth picture of the world of business. The facilities are amazing, very modern and user-friendly.”

As well as having a distinguished academic reputation, Lancaster is one of the few UK universities to offer major and minor study options to its undergraduates, allowing you to pursue your interests and widen your knowledge outside your core subject area.If you are studying the Business and Management Studies pathway, you need to nominate four possible degrees. If you are studying one of the other pathways, you need to nominate three possible degrees.

When you join the International Study Centre you will receive a conditional offer letter of a degree place at the University. You can progress onto your chosen degree when you have achieved the required progression criteria.

English Language Preparation (ELP)If you do not have the required level of English language to start the International Foundation Year, you can take our ELP course first. The course is designed to help you make good progress in each of the core English skills and achieve the level of language proficiency you need.

At the end of your ELP programme, you will not need to retake the IELTS exam and will progress to the International Foundation Year (providing you have achieved the required module grades).
