Once you have noted your own examples, consider what you could do to enhancethese examples and experiences. This will help your preparation for completingapplications and going for interviews. If in doubt, book an appointment with a CareerConsultant to discuss suitable examples of skills.

As an international student, what particular strengths and attributes could you offer aUK employer over and above a UK student? Consider the following list of typicalstrengths offered by an international applicant. What evidence would you offer anemployer that you possess these skills?

    Language skills

    Cross cultural awareness

Work experience in a global market

    Overseas contacts and networks

    Technical and business skills

    Other strengths?

So, whatever your reasons for coming to Cardiff University and wherever you arefrom, you will need to consider how you can use this experience to develop youremployability in order to successfully compete in the job market. UK employers arelooking for students and graduates who can offer key transferable skills andattributes gained not only on their degree courses but from other areas of their livesas well.

    What constitutes Work Experience?

Work Experience comprises a wide range of activities that can shape and influenceyour career thinking and help position you for the career path(s) you will follow. Itcovers a range of structured and flexible activities which may be arranged by you orby an employer. In the UK, the following activities can all count as valid workexperience:

Placements. Also known as industrial placements, sandwich years, year inindustry. They are often structured programmes of 6 months or 12 monthsduration and typically offered as part of technical and scientific degrees. There are also graduate placements which may be shorter and offered acrossvarious work sectors for graduates from various degree disciplines

Internships. Also known as work experience schemes, vacation schemes orsummer internships. Typically, these are formal and structured programmeswhich typically last for 8-12 weeks over the summer but can sometimes last 1or 2 weeks over Easter or at Christmas. Internships are often used as a wayof identifying future graduate recruits and introducing them to the company.

Insight events are offered by an increasing number of organisations to givestudents a taste of a particular company or industry while allowing theorganisation to identify potential future recruits.

Work Shadowing where you would arrange to visit a workplace and observean individual or individuals as they carry out their work.

Voluntary Work can include a range of community, social care, environmental, ethical or other projects.

    7

Part-time / Casual work where you would work within the 20 hour per weeklimit of your student visa in a role that is not permanent.

Other activities include project work as part of a degree course, studentsociety roles, student representative, student helper roles, entrepreneurialventures etc.

So it is not all about finding a paid, internship in a specific field of work. There are somany other activities that can count as valid work experience.

FINDING PART-TIME WORK & EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Opportunities for part-time work exist for students both on and off campus.Competition for on-campus jobs is usually high and positions are filled quickly.Finding a job relevant to your degree or career may also be quite difficult. Careers &Employability and the Student Union typically provide a range of activities where acertificate of attendance or achievement may be provided automatically or uponrequest.

Would you like to boost your CV or job application? Struggling to see what is onoffer? Wondering whether you can afford the time? Here are a few activitiessuccessfully undertaken by previous international students:

    SPECULATIVE APPLICATIONS

Applying speculatively means applying for work experience / jobs that are notadvertised, but may well exist. You can apply speculatively for work experience

(with a CV and covering letter) to organisations. You may have personal contactsthat can put you in touch with recruiters, alternatively you can apply directly. In doingso you must ensure that:

    You find out who is responsible for recruitment and send the application directlyto them (you may need to make a phone call in the first instance to obtain thisinformation);

    Your letter / CV is tailored to the experience you are hoping to gain;

    You research the organisation you are applying to and show evidence of this inyour letter;

    You match your skills to those required by the company you are applying to;

You let them know of the dates you are available and provide your contactdetails.

For detailed information on making speculative applications refer to thedownloadable booklets, International Students: CV Writing, Careers Guides: CVsand Covering Letters and How to Get a Placement/Internship

THE UK JOB & INTERNSHIP RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Although there will be similarities between the internship and graduate job market indifferent countries, it is worth pointing out some elements that are important in theUK recruitment process.

    Timescales for Applications

Every year in the UK, summer internships, vacation schemes and graduate jobs withlarge companies are advertised on their websites and on recruitment portals fromSeptember / October. Application deadlines typically fall between November toJanuary for graduate jobs and December to March for internships or vacationschemes. This means that if you are keen to apply to established internship

schemes, you will need to start applying in the beginning of the penultimate year ofyour course if you are an undergraduate. Many summer internships target

  • 7/28/2019 International Students Work Experience Ideas

    12/45

    9

penultimate year undergraduates. If you are keen to apply to established graduatetraining schemes, you will need to start applying in the beginning of the final year ofyour course if you are an undergraduate. If you are on a Master's course you willneed to apply almost at the start of your studies or after you submit your dissertationif you wish to apply early for the following year. If the latter, you will need to check

that you have enough time remaining on your Tier 4 student visa to do your jobhunting in the UK. More about this in the International Student booklets onIdentifying Employers and Employment Regulations.

    Application Deadlines

A growing number of employers take applications all year round and may not have adeadline. Again early application is always advisable if you know what you want todo and want to get in ahead of the competition. Smaller or medium-sized employers(employing up to 250 staff) may be more flexible as they need to be reactive tomarket conditions and they are more likely to recruit as and when vacancies arise

and quite often nearer to the time of graduation.

    Qualification Matching Career?

In the UK, the career that graduates enter e.g. IT, Law, Accountancy, Banking is notnecessarily in the same field as the subject they studied at University. In many ofthese career areas, graduates from a range of different degree subjects will join a 2-3 year Graduate Training Scheme. As many as 40-50% of graduate job vacanciesare for graduates from any degree subject. For many of these jobs, the degreesubject is not as important as overall academic achievement and the possession ofrelevant skills and attributes.

    Key Transferable Skills

UK employers are focussed on key transferable skills. In job applications you need toshow evidence of skills developed in areas such as work, course, sporting andleisure activities. Most job descriptions are written with a certain skill set in mind andit is normally expected of the job candidate to illustrate how he/she matches therequired skill profile both in their written application and during the interview. Typicalskills sought include: Communication, Team Working, Leadership, Analytical,Problem Solving, Time Management, Planning & Organising, Decision-making etc.

See the earlier section on What Do UK Employers Want? for further details.

    Method of Application

Companies vary in their methods of recruitment. Many will require an applicationform completed on-line; others may require you to submit a CV and covering letter. The cardinal rule in all cases is to follow instructions and always ask for help if youhave any doubts by booking a careers appointment or by contacting the employerdirect if you have a very specific and technical question relating to the applicationprocess. Check the FAQ sections of recruitment websites to see whether yourquestions are addressed before making contact.

    Selection

Selection processes can start from a telephone interview, progress to a face-to-faceinterview, and then in some cases move on to an Assessment Centre. AssessmentCentres normally include various exercises both individual and group-based such ascase studies, in-tray or e-tray exercises, group discussions and some form of

Psychometric Testing which involves a series of timed, ability tests. It is common foremployers to do Competency-based Interviews where you are asked to giveexamples of instances when you have used and developed certain competencies (orattributes) that will often be on their website or appear on the application form. Forfurther information on attributes and competencies, refer to the section on How toImprove Your Employability

Under no circumstances will companies provide a job offer if they have notinterviewed the candidate.

    FACING WORK EXPERIENCE CHALLENGES

Gaining work experience will help you develop those key transferable skills neededby many employers in the UK and elsewhere. Any UK work experience has its valueas it will give you exposure to different groups of people and different uses of Englishand even if you decide to return home upon completion of your studies, manyemployers will want to see that you have gained something more than just study

experience in the UK. International students in the UK can sometimes encounterdifficulties when trying to find suitable work experience. In the following table aresome scenarios where challenges arise and some possible solutions.

    POSSIBLE SCENARIO POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

    1. You would like to find graduate levelwork experience in a field relevantto your chosen career but you onlysee adverts for cleaning, bar andshop jobs. What do you do?

Go to the online Jobs Pages on the Careers &Employability website and search through theWork Experience, Placements, vacation andpart-time jobs on offer

Remember that any work experience can beuseful and can be a way of showing transferableskills

Look at the UK employment obtained by some

    11

Cardiff International Alumni in Appendix 1.

    2. You phone an employer about anadvertised work placement and theyask you to provide evidence of youreligibility to work in the UK. Whatdo you do?

If you have a work restriction as opposed to aprohibition stamp in your student visa you canshow this to them. This means you are allowedto take employment for up to 20 hours per weekterm-time without getting any further approval orpermission

You can refer them to the UK Border Agencywebsite and employers helpline on 0300 1234699 where they can check that you are allowedto work

Remember that all employers are legally obligedto check that all their employees are eligible towork in the UK

Refer to the Careers & Employability Guide onEmployment Regulations for further information

    3. An employer tells you that you needa National Insurance Numberbefore you can start working. Whatdo you tell them?

You do not need to have a NINo before startingwork, but you must obtain one when you get ajob.

They can still employee you by giving you atemporary NINo until you get your own

Refer to the Careers & Employability Guide onEmployment Regulations for further information

    4. An employer is concerned that astudents English Language abilitymight prevent them from doing the

job to the required standard. How isthe student going to convince theemployer otherwise?

They might need to clarify what level of EnglishLanguage ability is required to do the job

What evidence can they give to show that they

meet the English language and otherrequirements of the job

If there are gaps in their English languageability, they need to consider how they might fillthese e.g. taking an English course, findingopportunities to practise their English, organisea language exchange, make friends with Britishpeople or other nationalities

    5. You approach an employer who is ofparticular interest to you and express an

interest in their summer internshipprogramme. They say that they onlyaccept UK / EU applicants in thepenultimate year of their undergraddegree as they use the programme tolater recruit graduates who can work forthem long term.

This may not be the case for every employer.Research different internship opportunities.

Find out about their policy in relation to workvisas through visiting their website, contactingthem direct etc.

If the employer has a presence in your homecountry or elsewhere, could they put you intouch with someone who manages theinternship programme there?

Check UK based agencies who may specialisein UK internships for certain nationals e.g.Chinese, Indian. Check their fees and servicesbefore registering.

    6. A friend tells you that they are far Remember that some types of work experience

    12

too busy with course work and donthave time to do any workexperience. They are not surewhich career to pursue anyway andas they plan to return to their homecountry immediately following theirdegree they dont think that work

experience in the UK will be veryuseful to them. How would youreply to them?

like work shadowing or tasters might be veryshort and may not be time-consuming.

Consider a general work placement or severalshort but different placements to help themdecide.

Getting UK work experience as well as a UKqualification will make them more attractive to anemployer back home.

Employers everywhere are keen to see how youadd value to your qualification. Its not just aboutgood grades. Its the other aspects of theexperience and how well you articulate thebenefits of these to yourself and to theemployer.

    7. Any other challenges or obstaclesyou may encounter.

Book an international appointment viawww.cardiff.ac.uk/careers to discuss further.

GENERAL WORK ETIQUETTE IN THE UK

Whether you are doing a part-time job, an internship, attending a graduate jobinterview or generally interacting with British people, it is worth being aware of thefollowing:

Greetings: A simple firm handshake is the standard greeting (for both men and

women) for business occasions. It is considered polite to do so. The response to afirst introduction is normally nice to meet you or pleased to meet you'. Usually allcolleagues call each other by their first names. Managers are now less formal andwill most likely expect you to address them with their first names once you havebeen formally introduced. Exceptions are very senior managers. You should alwayswait to be invited to use first names before doing so yourself. But, until you haveestablished a good working relationship or have learned enough about the companyculture, it is probably best to stay formal on first contact with any business contacts.

Body Language: Privacy and personal space' are important in the UK and peoplenormally keep a certain space away from the person when they are talking to eachother. It is also considered inappropriate to touch others in public when inconversation unless you are really familiar with them.

Conversation: You will observe that on the whole most people do not talk loudly inpublic and try not to disrupt others e.g. in open plan offices, on the train, bus etc. Also asking personal questions or intensely staring at another person is notconsidered appropriate. Individuals usually do not discuss their salaries at work.

When in the workplace you may find that direct questions will receive indirectresponses and conversations may be ambiguous and quite subtle. So, it is

important to pay attention to tone of voice and facial expression, as this could be away of telling what people really mean e.g. when you are asked to do something it

  • 7/28/2019 International Students Work Experience Ideas

    16/45

    13

might not be obvious that it is a request because it is done in such an indirect andpolite manner.

Equality: In most working environments men and women are treated equally. Thisapplies to other areas of difference such as age, disability, race and ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion and belief. This is encouraged by anti-discrimination

legislation and often by a genuine desire to put the principles of equality and diversityinto practice.

Politeness: On the whole, people in the UK are renowned for their politeness andcourtesy. This is a basic element of UK culture and is part of the style ofcommunication. You will have noticed that people say sorry often e.g. when theypass too close to you or when they accidentally bump in to you etc.

It is also customary to hold doors open for people when walking through a doorwayor corridor.

Humour: Often quite dry and somewhat sarcastic, humour is very important ingeneral communication and is present at every level and on almost every occasionat work and socially. On the whole though British humour is witty and self-deprecating and can often be a defence mechanism. It can be highly implicit and inthis sense is related to the British indirect communication style. Much use is made ofirony so do listen carefully for cues and do not take all comments literally.

'Stiff Upper Lip': This is a term often used to describe how reserved, restrained andstoic people can be when faced with difficult situations. In British culture, opendisplays of emotion, positive or negative, are not always looked on as appropriate.During meetings, this means your colleagues may approach difficult business

negotiations with an air of detachment.

Meetings: Business meetings in the UK are often structured but not too formal andbegin and end with social conversation. Punctuality is essential. Meetings are avery important management instrument. All important decisions will be brought up,discussed, negotiated and passed through during meetings. The established rulesand practices are followed and as a result decision making may appear slow. Innegotiations a win-win approach is favoured.

Dress Code: This will vary from job to job and some work environments insist oninformality while others are formal but will have a dress down day usually on aFriday.

which may be vastly different to the job market in the UK. In particular, you will needto know about the general timescale for job applications, vacancy sources, themethods of applying for jobs, CV/job application/interview format. Check out the factsheets for a selection of key countries in the International Students section of theCareers & Employability website.

If you return to your native country for vacations as a student it may be a good ideato use this time strategically to find out about the job market situation, make contactwith employers or even undertake work experience in your chosen career field.

It might help as well to identify any alumni networks in your native country as they

sometimes run re-orientation seminars for returning internationals and organiseevents to network with relevant alumni. Alumni from your country might be a usefulsource of information and advice on how to market your international education andcompete in a job market with those who have undertaken all their education in thehome country. The University Alumni Office has contact details for differentnetworks of Cardiff Alumni around the world and social media platforms can also bea way of developing alumni contacts e.g. via LinkedIn or special interest groups onFacebook.

It may also be worth checking any links that Cardiff Council or the Welsh Assembly

Government / Business Wales may have with your home country. On their websitesclick on their International Policy and International Trade pages for details of specificcompanies and industries within different countries. Organisations like UK IndiaBusiness Council (UKIBC) and China Britain Business Council (CBBC) may provideyou with contacts for international trade links in the respective countries. Trade &Investment and employer organisations such as UK Trade Invest and BritishChambers of Commerce may have international trade contacts on their websites. From time to time, Careers & Employability receives adverts from Internationalrecruitment agencies that are looking for nationals of particular countries to fillpositions within multi-national corporations. Details of a few of these are listedbelow.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL JOB SEARCH

    1. Be focused in your career plans. Make an appointment with your subject-based Career Consultant and also with the International Career Consultant viathe on-line Appointments Booking System: www.cardiff.ac.uk/careers

    2. Make your CV stand out. Attend the CVs for International Students workshopand get your CV reviewed on the Quick Enquiry desk. Aim for a CV whichpersuades employers of your suitability and strengths. Read the bookletInternational Students: CV Writing available in the Careers & EmployabilityCentre and downloadable on our website.

    3. Try to anticipateemployer concerns about recruiting Internationalstudents/graduates. Consider how you will respond to allay any concerns theymay have about your application i.e. in relation to your ability and confidence inusing English, your awareness of UK work culture, the amount of work

experience you have, your eligibility to work in the UK etc.

    4. Reflect positively on any particular strengths in your internationalbackground and experience and be prepared to highlight the internationalaspects that could help you make a unique contribution to a UK employer.

    5. Connect with International Alumni from your country for job search tips andinformation about career possibilities. Use Cardiff University Alumni Office, personal tutors and social media sites to expand your network of contacts.Check out some UK and overseas career destinations of international alumni inAppendices 1 & 2.

    6. Know your personal situation and keep up-to-date withwww.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk Regarding work during your studies, beprepared to educate some employers about the regulations. Further detailsavailable at www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk It is worth pointing out that you donot have to have a National Insurance Number before starting work as astudent.

    7. Register with Unistaff Jobshop in the Student Union for part-time work asearly as possible in the academic year in order to catch the majority ofadvertised opportunities.

    8. Regarding work after your studies, target employers who sponsor workvisas. Check the Register of Sponsors on the UKBA website. Check employerwebsites regarding work permit policy before attending Careers Fairs orEmployer Presentations or before completing job applications. Try to identifyany Work Permit contacts within companies. After the closure of the Tier 1PSW visa route in April 2012, the main way in which international students can

stay in the UK to work is by securing a graduate level job with an employer whois a UKBA registered Tier 2 sponsor. Further information is found in the Careersbooklet International Students: Employment Regulations.

    9. Look out for international trade links. Identify UK organisations that have apresence in your home country and vice versa. Also, identify other countries orregions of the world targeted by your country for export and trade. Furtherinformation is found in the Careers booklet International Students: IdentifyingEmployers. Details on the job market in different countries is available in theWork Abroad section of the Careers & Employability Centre and the WorkingOutside the UK section of our website

    www.cardiff.ac.uk/careers/students/international-students/

    10. Obtain work experience. This could lead to further work in the future.Unfortunately some employers are reluctant to employ International Studentsfor work experience if a work visa is required to work in the UK after graduation the reason for this is that many internship and work placement schemes usethe work experience as a recruitment method for their graduate schemes. Thisdoes not apply to all companies therefore you are advised to check with eachcompany before applying. Attend the Work Experience Ideas for InternationalStudents workshop and read the careers booklets on How to get a Placement /Internship for details of possibilities. Remember, that a number of activities andopportunities count as valid work experience.

APPENDIX 3 - CHINA JOB HUNTING TIPS - A GUIDE FOR STUDENTS

The content of this handout is based upon a careers employability visit to Beijing andShanghai in 2009.

Application tips from employer contacts in China

To make an application stand out from the 1000s of others it can be useful towrite a covering letter by hand in Chinese characters. This recommendation onlyapplies if a student is confident that they can write Chinese characters well.Good handwriting symbolises diligence, patience and a higher level of generalculture. Normally only used for Chinese companies and/or State-ownedcompanies.

Including a summary or career objective at the beginning of a Chinese resume isessential. Resumes have only relatively recently been introduced into China.

Social referrals and internet portals are the most popular methods of jobsearching. Many jobs never get advertised and positions are filled throughpersonal referrals from friends or family (Guanxi).

Where appropriate a student could include The Times Wor
