Welcome

Dear Students,

We are very excited that you have chosen Alliant International University to pursue your academic endeavors. The International Student Services and Student Scholars Office and Student Affairs staff is here to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have with international student matters.

Our objective is to make your transition to California and school as smooth as possible. Our office will be able to assist you with the following:

n New Student Orientation

n Assistance with understanding the immigration rules and regulations that impacts you as an international student. We are here to assist you with all immigration paperwork for program extensions, travel endorsement, change of address, reinstatement, change of status, employment and moving to another education level or school.

n Help with understanding the work authorization process for obtaining on or off campus employment.

n Assistance with Disability related questions and process.

Since everyone has a unique experience abroad, we cannot begin to address all of the possible surprises ahead of you however, we hope this orientation packet will answer many of the basic questions you may have and help you get started on your stay with us. We are certain you will find this packet to be a useful resource throughout your stay in the United States.

Introduction

1. Obtaining Your Student Visa

All international students, except those who are U.S citizens and green card holders, willing to study in the U.S will need the following to obtain a visa:

A. Valid passport (issued by your government) and valid for at least six months

B. Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 form issued by Alliant International University)

1.2 BEGINNING THE U.S. VISA PROCESSThe process begins with obtaining an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility form. Once you have received the I-20, you will log on to www.fmjfee.com

1.3 PAY YOUR SEVIS FEEA SEVIS I-901 fee of USD $200 is required of all students and exchange visitors. You will need proof that the I-901 fee was paid to be granted a visa, so be sure to bring your receipt to your interview. You can pay this fee via the USCIS website or by mail. Paying via the website is recommended as it will immediately generate the receipt required for the visa interview. Paying the fee via mail can take up to 4 weeks to receive the receipt. 1.4 SCHEDULE YOUR VISA INTERVIEWAfter paying your SEVIS fee, print out your receipt for your records and Student Services will inform you of your form’s SEVIS ID number. You can use this ID number to make an appointment with your local U.S. Consulate.

An interview at the U.S. Consulate or embassy is required in most countries as part of the visa process. We suggest that you make an appointment for the interview as soon as you receive your SEVIS ID number to avoid unnecessary delays in getting your visa. Please note that in some countries there is a one to two-month interview appointment wait time.

n The earliest possible interview date you can have is 120 days prior to Orientation. To find your local U.S. Embassy please visit: http://www.usembassy.gov

n For estimated wait times at your U.S. Embassy please visit: http://travel.state.gov

1.5 PREPARING FOR THE VISA INTERVIEWSign Section 11 of your I-20, and take it to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country with copies of the documents that support your ability to pay your costs. Check with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country to see how long it will take to process your visa. When you apply for a visa to enter the U.S. it is important that you have all the required documents when you present your application to the consular official. These documents include:

n Visa certificate of eligibility (I-20)n Alliant International University acceptance lettern English Proficient Test results (if applicable)n Proof of fundingn SEVIS fee receiptn Passport/Visa Photographs

Consulates may have country-specific requirements, such as:

n Answering questions concerning the duration of your stay at the U.S

n Foreseeable academic experience upon your return to your home country

n Rationale for choosing to study at Alliant International University

n Please be sure to visit the consulate’s website. You may find a list of U.S. consulates at: http://usembassy.state.gov

n How do you plan on using your education from Alliant to further your career goals in your home country?

2. F-1/J-1 Immigration Status Information

The certificate of eligibility for an F-1 student is the I-20 form. An I-20 is used to secure a visa and to enter the United States. The I-20 form is an indication to the consular officer that Alliant International University has found you to be academically admissible, financially capable, and linguistically prepared for your studies here. In order to remain in good status during your stay in the U.S.:

n You must maintain a full time course of study, and complete each semester with a full course load.

• For international undergraduate students, Alliant’s requirement of full-time course of study is a minimum of 12 units or more per semester (fall and spring) and is dependent on your academic program.

• For international graduate students, Alliant requires a minimum of 8 units or more per semester (fall and spring) and is dependent on your academic program.

n You must remain in good academic standing.

n You must keep your I-20 in a safe place. Do not lose it.

n You must have a valid passport. It is your responsibility to keep your passport valid and to renew it six months prior to its expiration date.

n You are required to carry documents regarding your nationality and immigration status at all times. To avoid loss of your originals, we recommend you always carry your passport, visa, I-20, and I-94 with you (departure record which will be stapled to your passport upon reaching the Passport Control at the airport).

n You must notify the school of any change in your address within 10 days of the change. Submit a Change of Address Form to the Designated School Official (DSO) in the International Student Services Office and the REgistrar’s Office. The address cannot be a post office box.

n You must limit authorized employment to no more than 20 hours/week while school is in session unless employment is an integrated part of your university program. In that case, you may work up to 40 hours/week.

n You must not accept off campus employment without

proper authorization.

4. Check-In with your school

Once you have arrived in California, you must contact your Designated School Official as soon as possible and schedule an appointment. The Designated School Officials by campus are listed above in section three.

4.1.1 PLANNING YOUR TRAVELOnce your F1 Student Visa has been approved you will want to begin your plans to travel to California and your chosen campus. Be sure to plan your arrival at least one week before courses start in order to check in with your DSO, attend mandatory orientation and get settled in your new location.

4.1.2 IMMUNIZATION RECORDS AND MEDICAL INSUR-ANCEPrior to your arrival to an Alliant University campus, you must obtain your immunization health record. For international students, the request for proof of vaccination is included with the I-20 form. International students attending campuses other than San Diego will submit their completed immunization forms to the Director of Campus Services (DCS).

4.1.2 IMMUNIZATIONProof of having had the disease or proof of having had the vaccination of the following diseases is required:

n MMR / MEASLES, MUMPS, RUBELLA VACCINE – Required for EVERYONE. This combination vaccine is given because it protects from Measles, Mumps and Rubella. Two doses are required for entry into Alliant International University. Both doses must have been received on or after the first birthday. ***NOTE: Must include a lab report.***

n MCV4 (MENACTRA/MENVEO) / MENIN-GOCOCCAL MENINGITIS VACCINE – The CDPH requires all students who are new to the residence halls to receive this vaccine to live on campus.

n TDAP (TETANUS/DIPHTHERIA/PERTUSSIS) – Required for everyone. Booster shot within last10 years.

n VARICELLA (CHICKENPOX) – Required for all. Provide proof of two doses of Varivax. Both doses must have been received on or after first birthday. May be included with MMR vaccine.

4.1.3 HEALTH INSURANCEAll international students attending Alliant University are required to obtain health insurance coverage during their tenure at Alliant.

1] Effective throughout the semester and renewable for continuous coverage

2] Minimum dollar coverage of $100,000 per illness or injury

3] Include outpatient care (doctor visits, outpatient surgery, etc.)

4] Include hospitalization

5] Repatriation for at least $25,000

6] Medical evacuation for at least $50,000

7] Cost of deductible, if any, does not exceed $500 per accident or illness

5. Your Arrival

Once you have arrived in California, you must contact your Designated School Official (DSO) as soon as possible and schedule an appointment. Refer to section 3 for the contact information on your assigned DSO.

5.1 CLASS REGISTRATIONEvery student enrolling at Alliant is advised by an academic advisor. Your advisor will counsel you in your courses and will register you for your classes. Registration is not complete until all fees and tuition are paid. Your registration may be canceled for the following reasons:

n Dishonored check

n Non-payment of fees and tuition before classes begin

n Non-payment of tuition installments

n Failure to provide official admissions documents for verification if officials were not provided prior to arrival in the United States.

5.1.1 ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TEST (EPT)The English Proficiency Test measures a student’s abilities in reading, grammar, writing, listening and speaking skills. Taking the Alliant’s EPT is an admissions requirement for all international students who do not meet the English proficiency requirement listed for their specific academic program.

Based on EPT results, students will be assigned to one or more ESL courses, or allowed to begin their degree program immediately. Each skill is evaluated separately; therefore, students may place at different levels in different skill areas.

5.2 PAYING UNIVERSITY FEESPayment of tuition is expected at time of registration. The deadline for tuition payment is the Friday before the first day of the Alliant term. If you choose to pay a portion or all of your tuition prior to arriving in the US, it is important to include your name and student identification number on the wire to ensure that your payment is credited to the correct account. To pay your fees by a wire transfer, use the following information:

5.3 TEXTBOOKSAlliant does not have a bookstore to purchase your textbooks. Alliant students purchase their textbooks through online retailers. For a list of websites to purchase textbooks at an affordable cost, refer to Appendix C, Textbooks 101.

5.4 Housing

5.4.2 ALLIANT OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING

Alliant students have numerous housing options in the San Diego area and we encourage you to explore all that San Diego has to offer! Two options offered by Anatolia Corporate Housing are geared toward university students are listed below.

n Anatolia Corporate Housing: www.ac-housing.com

Anatolia offers apartments with shared or private bedrooms at Mirada at La Jolla Colony (7568 Charmant Drive, San Diego, CA 92122) or the Costa Verde Apartments (8720 Costa Verde Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92122). Apartments are fully furnished and include washer & dryers, bed linens, kitchen utensils, wireless internet, assigned parking, cable TV, and VCRs. Each complex offers swimming pools, a business center, maid services and a fitness center. Both complexes are within walking distance to shopping, movie theaters and restaurants and close to multiple San Diego MTS bus routes.

Anatolia also offers free shuttle service from the San Diego airport to Anatolia to their apartments for stays of 10 weeks or longer ($55 fee for airport pick-up for stays less than 10 weeks.)

Many international students do not have personal credit or references in the United States, and thus you must prove your financial ability to pay your monthly rental or lease costs. Your I-20 is a good start but may not always be enough. Therefore, be prepared to prove that you will be able to afford rent. If you are approved to rent an apartment, you will sign a lease contract. Renting an apartment or house takes time and a lot of paperwork.

Ideas for means to achieve this:

n Provide a copy of proof of your affiliation with Alliant University

n Provide a copy of your J-1 or F-1 visa. Most landlords do not know the significance of this visa. Inform them that without proof of sufficient funds, a student or researcher would not be granted a visa by any consular section of a U.S. embassy. Let a landlord know that a person granted a visa had to show adequate resources to demonstrate ability to pay for all educational costs plus living expenses while in the U.S.

n Provide a copy of your personal identification such as a passport – residents of California provide a California Driver’s License or California ID card

n Provide an official letter of financial support from your sponsor if you have one

n Open a bank account after arrival and place a substantial amount of money in it to demonstrate proof of funds. (Some ways to bring money into the country are through PayPal, international money order, or through wire transfer)

n Offer to pay the maximum deposit allowable by law

n Provide an “Income Certificate” or “Certification of Deposit Balance” from your country.

n Show evidence of credit card accounts

n Have a friend who is a resident of the city of your campus write a letter of recommendation, or actually have them co-sign the rental agreement

n Skype with the landlord or manager before your arrival so that both parties can gain some impression of each other.

When you sign a lease, you will typically be required to pay a security deposit. The deposit is equivalent to at least one month’s rent, in addition to the first month’s rent. The security deposit will be returned to you when you move out, provided you leave the apartment in good condition. Make sure you read what you are signing and understand the terms of the landlord.

It is a good idea to begin your apartment search after arriving in the US so that you can see the property in person. That way you are assured that the location, cost and price meet your budget. In order to do this, you will need to have short term housing in a hotel or short-stay accommodation that you have made reservations with before arrival.

5.4.4 UTILITIESOnce you are approved to move in to your apartment or other dwelling, you will pay for utilities (unless the utilities are included as part of your rental cost). Utilities include electricity, gas, water, and garbage. Those costs are not automatically included in the monthly rental cost.

connected under your name. The landlord may have a list of contacts or you may search the city in which you will live to locate the utilities company that will service your apartment. The cost of each utility varies city by city. The utility companies may require you to pay a deposit before service is activated and these deposits can be refunded to you or credited to your account when you terminate your service, provided you have paid all of your bills.

Note: since you will not have a Social Security Number (SSN), an extra fee might be required for you to pay in addition to installation of utilities.

5.4.5 TELEPHONEOften times, international students purchase a cell phone in the U.S. A variety of cell phone carriers sell cell phones. To have cell phone service, you will need to sign a contract. Contracts range from month-to-month, one year or two years. The major cell phone carriers include Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, Metro PCS, AT&T, and Cricket. The student is responsible to get informed about which cell phone carrier they will purchase and that will best suit their needs for the amount of time of their stay in the United States.

5.4.6 BANKINGTo avoid having to carry a lot of cash around all of the time, you should think about opening a bank account with a local bank as soon as you arrive. Most local banks will want you to come in person to set up your account. You will need an identification card (ID) and passport to open an account. Banks will accept taxpayer ID# (TIN) instead of a social security card. You can obtain a taxpayer ID# through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The contact information for the IRS website is www.irs.gov com and phone is 1-800-829-1040, or the San Diego branch office at (619) 615-9555.

Most banks are open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm during the week, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, and are closed on Sundays and holidays. Most banks also have Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) that operate 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. You will need to have a bank account and bankcard to use an ATM.

6. Frequently Asked Questions

6.1 HOW DO I REGISTER FOR CLASSES?Every student enrolling at Alliant is advised by an academic advisor. Your advisor will counsel you in your courses and will register you for your classes. Registration is not complete until all fees and tuition are paid. Your registration may be canceled for the following reasons:

n Dishonored check

n Non-payment of fees and tuition before classes begin

n Non-payment of tuition installments

6.2 AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT, CAN I WORK ON OR OFF THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS?

Immigration regulations are very strict with respect to working while carrying a student visa. In general, F-1 status allows for part-time, on-campus employment ONLY (25 hours/ week or less while school is in session). In order to apply for on campus employment, you must have a Social Security card.

Jobs on campus typically pay $12.25/hour. Do not count on this kind of a job for anything more than a supplement to other funds. Please do not assume you will be able to obtain a job on campus. Often times, there are more students than available jobs.

6.2.1 ON-CAMPUS WORKYou do have the option of curricular practical training (CPT) which allows you to receive stipends or pay for practicum or internship experiences required by the program. Be aware however, that paid practicum and internships are rare and will be detailed in the degree program description if required.

6.2.3 OFF-CAMPUS WORKWorking off campus must be approved by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS). Such approval is only for highly unusual circumstances, and often takes months of paperwork. Most requests for off campus employment are denied.

6.3 WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO HELP ME ADAPT TO MY NEW SURROUNDINGS?

First and foremost, become familiar with Alliant through websites and social media. Before you arrive, take time to “like” our facebook account and search the Alliant International blog. Doing this will familiarize you with images of people and places that will soon become familiar to you.

You should also be prepared for culture shock as you travel across the world and meet new people, adapt to a different environment and live within a new culture. Experiencing some discomfort before you can function well in a new setting is the culture shock stage of the adaptation process.

The common symptoms of culture shock are:

n Extreme homesickness

n Desire to avoid social settings that seem threatening or unpleasant

n Physical complaints and sleep disturbances

n Depression (or depressive symptoms) and feelings of helplessness

n Difficulty with course work and concentration

n Loss of your sense of humor

n Boredom or fatigue

n Hostility toward the host country

The main thing to remember is that this is a very normal process that nearly everyone goes through. It will help if you allow yourself ample time to say goodbye to the important people in your life and plan how to keep in touch. Culture shock is a bit different than cultural adaptation, which is the process of learning a new culture. Below are some strategies that might help.

6.3.1 OVERCOMING CULTURE SHOCKThe most effective way to combat culture shock is to step back from an event that has bothered you, assess it, and search for an appropriate explanation and response. Try the following:

n Observe how others are acting in the same situations

n Describe the situation, what it means to you, and your response to it

n Ask local residents how they would have handled the situation and what it means in the host culture

n Plan how you might act in this or similar situations in the future

n Test the new behavior and evaluate how well it works

n Decide how you can apply what you have learned the next time you find yourself in a similar situation.

n Make it a goal to meet new people

6.3.2 CULTURAL ADAPTIONThroughout the period of cultural adaptation, take good care of yourself. Gradually, as you become more involved in activities and get to know the people around you, the shock gradually eases and you begin to understand the new culture.

Students experiencing academic difficulties because of the above should feel free to see their Academic Advisor or Program Director or. Also remember that there are other international students around you that may share some of these feelings, and it may be helpful to speak with them about how you’re feeling. And finally, many of the students on campus are happy to assist you in any way they can, and especially in answering questions about the United States in general. Do not hesitate to speak with staff in the International Student Service Office. We are here to help.

6.4 IT IS IMPORTANT TO ME TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO MAINTAIN MY F1 VISA STATUS. WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR WHICH I MAY BECOME “OUT OF STATUS?”

n When you do not have the required course of study from your specific academic program, you are considered “out of status.”

• You must maintain a full time course of study, and complete each semester with a full course load.

n For international undergraduate students, Alliant’s requirement of full-time course of study is a minimum of 12 units or more per semester (fall and spring) and is dependent on your academic program.

n For international graduate students, Alliant requires a minimum of 8 units or more per semester (fall and spring) and is dependent on your academic program.

n When you lose your legal documents, you become “out of status.”

• You are required to carry documents regarding your nationality and immigration status at all times. To avoid loss of your originals, we recommend you always carry your passport, visa, I-20, and I-94 (departure record which will be stapled to your passport upon reaching the Passport Control at the airport).

• You must keep your I-20 in a safe place. Do not lose it.

• You must have a valid passport. It is your responsibility to keep your passport valid and to renew it six months prior to its expiration date.

n When you fail to inform the DSO of your change of address, you become “out of status.”

• You must notify the school of any change in your address within 10 days of the change. Submit a Change of Address form to the Registrar ’s Office and give a copy of the form to Student Services Coordinator. The address cannot be a post office box.

n When you accept employment off-campus without proper authorization you become “out of status.”

• You must not accept off-campus employment without proper authorization.

6.5 WHAT HAPPENS IF I BECOME “OUT OF STATUS” FOR ANY REASON?If you become out of status for any reason, it is your responsibility to try to get reinstated. Please contact the Designated School Official (DSO) at your campus for more information about the Reinstatement of your status. Please refer to section three to contact the DSO assigned to your University campus.

6.6.1 HEARING-IMPAIREDWe have a variety of services for hearing impaired student. In class note takers is one of the most frequently used accommodation. We have American Sign Language translators that we can contract. We also have speech to text software at our disposal.

6.6.2 PHYSICALLY IMPAIREDBuildings and bathrooms are handicap accessible. Also, handicapped parking spaces are available close to the many of the buildings that the student’s classes are located. If necessary, classes can be moved to a different location and classrooms can be rearranged to accommodate students. The use of a golf cart to transport students from one location to another is possible.

6.6.3 VISUALLY IMPAIREDBesides accommodations that have already been listed above the visually impaired specific accommodations include books in accessible format and text to speech software.

DEFINITIONS1] CashNet: Is an on-line payment computer program

located on your student account is your MyAlliant portal. Students use the portal to make payments to the University.

> Register for classes and pay your first semester tuition

> Obtain textbooks

> Purchase an American, pre-pay phone to make local calls

> Join the group to go to the local grocery store to obtain things like: water, aspirin, snacks, etc.
