School Procedures What to do if …… ABSENT FROM SCHOOL Students must attend school every day unless absent for medical or other acceptable reasons. If you are absent from school, your Homestay Parent should phone 5480 6361 to advise the details of absence. A note of explanation from your Homestay Parent is required and given to your Care Teacher on the day of return to school. A text message will be sent through the ID Attend system to Homestay Parents of students who are marked absent from school at Care Group. APPOINTMENTS Homestay Parents are always welcome to discuss student concerns or other school matters with Staff members. This can be done by phoning the main office where your call will be redirected to the appropriate staff member. All visitors to the school are required to report to the main administration school office, obtain a visitor pass/name tag and record their whereabouts in the school in case of an emergency. ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL BEFORE 8.00AM Students should not arrive at school before 8.00am. On the rare occasions when this is unavoidable, students should remain in the immediate area of the Administration Building. BREAKAGES OCCUR All breakages and acts of vandalism are to be reported to the office. Students’ parents will be asked to pay for repairs due to carelessness and vandalism. CAR PARKS Car parks are out of bounds at all times to students. Homestay Parents delivering or picking up students from school should use the Alenola Street entrance. The main car park is for the use of visitors to the school. CHANGING PERSONAL DETAILS All students are required to have their personal enrolment details up to date. To change any information, international students should discuss this with their Homestay Coordinator. FEELING SICK If a student is ill, Homestay Parents will be notified by telephone and will be requested to come to the school to take their student home. The school does not distribute or administer any pain relievers, e.g. aspirin or paracetamol. LATE TO SCHOOL Students should aim to arrive at school by 8:45am. Students not at Care class by 9.00am should report to the Student Services Office where their name will be recorded by the ID Attend system. Students will be issued with a late slip to be given to the class teacher. LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS A note of explanation from your Homestay Parent is required detailing the exact times. This note is to be handed into the Student Services Office and a pass collected at the time of departure. LOST PROPERTY After a thorough search of all appropriate areas, report the lost item to the office and check regularly with the cleaners. LUNCH PASS A permanent lunch pass can be issued on the understanding that your Homestay Parent will be at home during the lunch recess. On receipt of a written request from a Homestay Parent, this is available to students who live near the school. No other student may accompany the pass holder. MEDICATIONS Should medication prescribed by the student’s medical practitioner be required to be administered while the student is at school or involved in school-approved activities, a Natural Parent or Homestay Parent must fill in and sign the Medication Authority Form (located in enrolment package or by contacting the school office). An authorised member of staff will administer the medication as per the written instructions provided on the medication container by the pharmacist or medical practitioner. Medication without a pharmacist or doctor’s label will not be accepted by staff. The instructions on the medication container need to indicate specific times at which medication is to be administered, as well as the quantity of medication to be administered and the use-by date.

Homestay

You will be provided with a Homestay Orientation Booklet on arrival.

However, here are some things to be aware of:

The way Australian families live may be different to the way you live in your home country. The most important thing to remember if you are unsure of what is expected is ... ask your host family. Your homestay family will provide you with details about expectations and rules. In Australia, we work together as a family to make sure that all the household jobs are completed. This gives everyone more time to enjoy the lifestyle we are so happy to enjoy. This means that you will also need to help with chores so that everyone has more time for leisure and that everyone in the house is respected. Gympie is a semi-regional area where many families live on large blocks of land in a rural setting. Some of the household chores you may be expected to do include: In your room Make your bed Keep your room neat and tidy Change and wash your bed sheets In the bathroom Use water carefully – water is scarce in Australia and restrictions may apply Use makeup and electrical hair dryers and straighteners safely and according to homestay rules Leave the shower or bath clean Hang up your towel and change it Leave the toilet clean and follow house rules about toilet usage In the kitchen Wash, dry and put away dishes Load and empty the dishwasher Help with shopping and preparing meals Make your own snacks and clean up afterwards Help vacuum and mop Wipe the bench top Use kitchen appliances safely and put them away, e.g. toaster Use foods from the fridge and put them back correctly Take out the garbage In the laundry Learn how to use the washing machine, according to homestay rules Store dirty or wet clothes correctly in the laundry basket Hang up the washing Help take the clothes off the line and put them neatly in your room Iron clothes, according to homestay rules Outside Help with the gardening Help with the pool (if available) Put the rubbish bins out and bring them back in

Homestay Internet Usage Education Queensland International has very clear guidelines for internet use in the Homestay. Internet use in Australia can be very expensive. It is NOT included in your Homestay Fees which you have already paid to your Agent. It is your responsibility to pay for your own internet. In some cases, Homestays may give permission for you to access their WiFi. You should discuss this with your Homestay family. There are strict guidelines for students to adhere to when using internet within their homestay for the security and safety of both student and homestay. The homestay family and the student will agree on appropriate internet sites and downloads. The homestay family and the student will decide on an appropriate time for internet use. Restrictions will be made if students abuse internet usage.
