It is a cultural exchange that helps the student to understand the culture and customs of the region in which they are studying, and helps students to learn English and the way of life in Australia. Homestay also encourages the student to share information with their host about their home country and its culture. The weekly fee for a homestay student ranges from $250.00 AUD to $300.00 AUD per week. For more information visit www.homestaynetwork.org

Both male and female students in Australia wear casual clothing, so bring some t-shirts, sneakers, tops and jeans. Formal dress or traditional clothes may be worn for special occasions

Things to pack • Cash for immediate use (approximately $200.00 to

$400.00 AUD). There are currency converters located at all major international airports.

• Personal items (perhaps some photographs, recipes, favourite music for reminders of home).

• Clothing - layered clothing works well. Most students dress casually in jeans, skirts and shirts. You may wish to pack traditional clothing or formal wear for important events such as graduation

• Electrical goods, for example computers, mobile phones, music players.

Bringing your phones and laptops If you are considering bringing a mobile phone, laptop, or any communication devices, we suggest that you visit the Australian Communications and Media Authority www.acma.gov.au before making any purchases. If you bring computers with external or built in modems, they must be Austel Approved in order to function in Australia.

What not to bring Students are often surprised at how strict Australian Customs and Quarantine can be. Most food, plant or animal products cannot be brought into Australia. Some electrical equipment may need a receipt of purchase and the importing of alcohol, cigarettes and perfume is limited.

Preparing yourself Most people who have a period away from home will experience some homesickness or culture shock during their stay. This is a normal experience and you will need to allow yourself time to adjust and adopt to new experiences. You may also be able to prepare yourself and pack some items from home to help you in Australia. • Prepare yourself emotionally - talk to someone about

how you are feeling. It is ok to feel excited, scared, nervous, happy, tired and unsure all at once.

• Prepare some special items that will help you feel close to your friends, family and home. Some students pack photos or recipes they have learnt how to prepare.

• Practise taking care of yourself, if this is something new. Have a go at washing and ironing your own clothes, cooking your own meals and then washing the dishes.

• Look at websites to understand the cost of living in Australia and practice setting a budget.

• Read about Australian customs and culture. • Watch some Australian movies or listen to Australian

radio.• Read Victorian or Bendigo newspapers to familiarise

yourself with local events.

Laws and safety in Australia

Obeying the lawOne of the reasons we have such a wonderful lifestyle in Australia is due to our representative democracy, the separation powers, and our respect for the rules of the laws in Australia and as a result, society runs smoothly. In being granted a visa to study in Australia, you signed a document (Australian Values Statement Temporary) agreeing to respect Australian values and obey the laws of Australia for the duration of your stay. Social customs

Greeting people Whenmeetingsomeoneforthefirsttime, itisusualtoshake the person’s right hand with your right hand. People who do not know each other generally do not kiss or hug whenmeeting.Whenyoufirstmeetsomeone, itispolitenot to talk about personal matters.

Many Australians look into the eyes of the people they are talking with. They consider this a sign of respect, and an indication that they are listening. Do not stare at the person for a long time.

You can address a new acquaintance using their title and familyname.Youmayusetheirfirstnamewhentheyaskyou to or use it in the introduction. In the workplace and among friends, most Australians tend to be informal and calleachotherbytheirfirstnames.

Clothing customs Thetypesofclothingthatpeoplewearreflectthediversityin our society just as much as the variation in the climate. There are no laws or rules on clothing, but you must wear certain clothing for work situations. Most work places have dress standards.

Outside of the work situation, clothing is an individual choice; many people dress for comfort, for the social situation or the weather. Clubs, movie theatres and other places require patrons to be in neat, clean clothes and appropriate footwear.

Many Australians live close to the beach and the sea. On hot days, they may wear little clothing on the beach and surrounds. This does not mean that people who dress to go to the beach or to go swimming have low moral standards. It means this is what we accept on or near our beaches.

People from other countries can choose to wear their national dress. They may be religious or customary items and include monks’s robe, a burqa, a hijab or a turban. Asatolerantsocietywithpeoplefrommanydifferentcultures, clothing is a part of cultural beliefs and a practice that is encouraged.

Polite behaviour‘Please’ and ‘thank you’ are words that are very helpful when dealing with other people, and buying goods and services. When asked if you would like something, like a cup of tea, it is polite to say ‘yes’, ‘yes please’, or just ‘please’ if you would like it, or ‘no, thank you’ if you do not. When you receive something, it is polite to think the person by saying ‘thank you’. Australians tend to thank that people who do not say ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ are being rude. Using these words will help in building a good relationship.

Sometimes a sensitive issue may come up in conversation. Not to talk may seem rude. It is more polite to say ‘sorry, it is too hard to explain’ than to ignore a question. Australians often say, ‘excuse me’ to get a person’s attention and ‘sorry’ if we bump into them. We also say, ‘excuse me; or ‘pardon me’ if we burp or belch in public or a person’s home.

You should always try to be on time for meetings and other visits. If you realise you are going to be late, try to

Australian culture

14

contact the person to let them know. This is very important for visits to professionals as you may be charged money for being late or if you miss the appointment without notifying them before the appointment time.

Most Australians blow their nose into a handkerchief or tissue, not onto the footpath. This is also true for spitting. Many people will also say, ‘bless you’ when you sneeze. This phrase has no religious intent.

Tipping Tipping is not generally expected or practiced in Australia. ThisisbecausethroughoutAustralia, serviceindustrystaffare covered by minimum wage laws and therefore do not rely on this for their income. However, it is acceptable to leave a small amount (perhaps 10%) should you feel you have received exceptional service.
