Message from the Premier of Queensland The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring Australians and overseas students are given the opportunity to fulfil their educational potential and reap the benefits of learning at world-class universities and tertiary colleges in a safe and secure environment . The Queensland Institute of Business and Technology (QIBT) plays an important role in achieving this .

For 13 years, QIBT has aided the growth of Queensland’s international education sector, attracting students from around the world who wish to take that first step towards a successful future .

Queensland is a vibrant state where multiculturalism is welcomed as an important and valued part of our society . Year-by-year we are transforming Queensland into a knowledge-based economy where creativity and innovation drive our growth to promote prosperity and quality of life for all Queenslanders .

Become part of a culturally diverse community, learn in a relaxed and welcoming environment and enjoy living in Australia’s most progressive State .

Message from the College Director and Principal of QIBT QIBT has worked in partnership with Griffith University since 1997, offering a range of university-level programs which prepare our students for a smooth transition into further degree studies at the university .

The location of the College on the Griffith University campus, and the strong partnership between the two institutions, ensures our students are welcomed as part of the university community from the outset . The university-designed programs are often taught by university lecturers, and prepare our students for the demands of higher education in Australia .

QIBT specialises in delivering the learning process within a supportive environment, with small class sizes and additional contact hours to those typically offered within a university . This teaching model has resulted in high success rates for our students .

We are proud of the rich cultural mix within our student population, with currently more than 60 different nationalities represented at the college . Student mentors and caring staff help students settle into QIBT and for many, life in Australia .

In choosing a QIBT program, you will be following thousands of other students who have graduated from the College with their QIBT award and gone on to achieve further success at Griffith University .

I look forward to welcoming you to the College community and encourage you to make QIBT the first step to achieving your goals .

Anna BlighPremier and Minister for the Arts Queensland Government

Heather Tinsley College Director and Principal

Message from the Vice Chancellor of Griffith University Since we opened our doors in 1975, Griffith University has come to be regarded as one of the leading and most influential universities of Australia and the Asia-Pacific region . We offer a distinctive learning experience that fosters global perspectives in all students – from a curriculum engaged with international issues, to study exchanges abroad and research collaborations with partner universities around the world .

We see many students who have not met traditional university academic requirements thrive when given an opportunity to study at university .

Located on Griffith University’s Mt Gravatt campus, QIBT offers you a range of study options . You will also have access to computing, library and recreational facilities to help prepare you for the transition to tertiary study .

You can choose from the foundation year, Diploma and Postgraduate Qualifying programs, which the university monitors and approves . When you successfully complete the foundation year, you qualify for entry to a standard Bachelor degree program .

When you choose to study at QIBT, you automatically become part of the wider university community . I wish you well with your studies at QIBT and look forward to welcoming you as a Griffith University student .

‘At first, moving to Brisbane seemed to be a daunting task. However, during my first few weeks of living in the city, I soon realised that Brisbane was not scary after all. The people are as friendly as they are diverse, and I found that making friends wasn’t hard at all. It is also so easy to get from one place to another without it costing you a fortune. This is another reason why I love Brisbane so much.’John Nicholson, South Africa, Diploma of Graphic Design student

Share accommodationIn Australia, the most popular type of accommodation for students is share accommodation . ‘Sharing’ usually involves a small number of people living together in rental accommodation and sharing facilities (kitchen, bathroom) and household costs (security bond, internet, electricity, gas, phone) .

Share accommodation can be difficult to arrange from overseas, so we recommend you stay with a host family through Homestay for at least four weeks . You can then start to look for share accommodation on notice boards, websites, in local newspapers and through word of mouth .

‘Living with a host family was one of the most memorable parts of my experience abroad. My host parents were so nice and helpful; I felt like I was staying with my own family, so I just called them “mum” and “dad” instead of their names. Living with a host family imparted lots of special insight into the culture and daily life of an Australian and also rapidly improved my English.’ Xi Yuan (Ada), China, Diploma of Hotel Management graduate

HomestayHomestay is accommodation offered to students by host families who live within commuting distance to the campus . This is a popular option for students who need a safe and convenient place to stay during their studies . Homestay gives students a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture first hand by participating in the daily routine of the host family’s life .

Host families take an active interest in their students and help them settle into their new environment . This smooth transition makes it easier for students to get started with formal study .

Homestay families are chosen very carefully . Whether they are a family with children, a couple or a single person, your homestay experience should be a rich and rewarding one .

The length of your homestay can vary from a minimum of four weeks, to the full length of your program . It can be ideal for students who want to look for permanent accommodation once

they get here, without having to worry about meals, or signing a long term lease . Without the financial and legal risks, students can concentrate on their primary focus, their study .

Students are welcomed as part of the family and are given:

a warm, caring and safe place to live•

a private, furnished bedroom•

guidance and support with language•

help and information about public • transport

nutritious, wholesome meals .•

Please note: If you are an international student under 18 years of age and are not under the care of a DIAC approved carer, you will need to stay in homestay accommodation until you are 18 .

Hyo Sung Kim, Korea, IBM QIBT: Diploma of IT | Griffith: Bachelor of IT

My education at QIBT and Griffith University enabled me to secure employment with IBM. I never expected to be working for a multinational computer technology and consulting corporation immediately after graduating from university. IBM is providing me with opportunities to work as an IT specialist throughout the world.

Helping students achieve their goals

Parag Shah, India, Fulton Hogan Pty Ltd QIBT: PQP | Griffith: Master of Engineering in Engineering Management

My Indian experience, coupled with my Master of Engineering, helped me to attain my current role as a Graduate Engineer. Before coming to Australia, I researched all the universities and found that Griffith offered a program that was very good at polishing and honing graduate engineers. The course also gave me the skills to become a manager in the future.

Rejoice Murefu, Zimbabwe, Kumusha African Food and Gifts QIBT: Certificate IV/Diploma of Hotel Management | Griffith: Bachelor of Business in International Tourism and Hotel Management

When the Global Financial Crisis hit, crisis became opportunity when in 2009, my partner and I decided to open an African food and gifts shop dedicated to helping myself and other African students with stable employment. My studies in management, communication skills and statistics at QIBT have really helped to provide me with the needed background knowledge to open a shop.

Inoka Wijeguanaratne, Sri Lanka, Princess Alexandra Hospital QIBT: Diploma of Commerce | Griffith: Bachelor of Nursing

When I moved to Australia, I was granted eligibility to study at Griffith University straight away, however, I chose to begin my studies with QIBT so I could learn how to succeed in Australia’s education system. At QIBT, I achieved a GPA of 7 thanks to the support from the academic advisors, lectures and tutors. With my internationally recognised qualification, I can work as a Registered Nurse throughout the world.

Truc Le, Vietnam, Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers QIBT: Diploma of Hotel Management

I started working for Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers in March 2005. I found out that everything I had studied at QIBT was very relevant to my job. The concepts of Hotel Management, reservation making processes and using PMS have provided me with a solid foundation in my career.

Dr Tommy Soesmanto, PhD (Economics)/BBus (Hons) Lectures in Economics and Business Statistics

Throughout my time at QIBT, I have found my teaching role very enjoyable. It always gives me great pleasure whenever my past students inform me of the usefulness of the knowledge and the skills that they developed at QIBT in helping them to succeed in their later studies and careers.

Mrs Roxanne Iwinski, MDigitalDes/CertC .A/CertMktgBCom Teaches Digital Graphic and Print Design

I have been self-employed in the Print Design industry since 1989 and my teaching roles within Queensland College of Arts (QCA)/Griffith University have been wide and varied. Working with QIBT since 2005 has enabled me to extend my teaching skills into the international forum. I have great respect for students studying abroad, who face both education and cultural hurdles everyday.

Mr Jeremy Tan, MBus/B .A ./GCArts/DipManEng Lectures in Marketing

Teaching is my passion and QIBT gives me the opportunity to teach in a multicultural environment comprising of students from many different countries. This context allows a very rich interaction that hones social communication and networking skills. It brings me great pleasure when students graduate successfully from QIBT and when I have the opportunity to teach them again at university.

Mr Mark Brennand, BIT/DipIT/CertIV TAA Lectures in Information Technology – Programming

I studied as a mature aged student at QIBT in 2002, and then completed my Bachelor degree at Griffith University. My experience in the industry allows me to apply real-life business scenarios in the classroom. The personalised learning environment at QIBT means I get to know all of my students in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Miss Anita Chard, MMark/GCBus/DipTEFL/B .A . Edu Lectures in Marketing, Business Communications and Academic/Professional Skills

Now in my second year at QIBT, I love teaching within such a supportive, multi-cultural education culture that follows a student-centred teaching philosophy. Previous personal experiences; studying in Switzerland and working in Japan allow me to understand and support QIBT students who study in a second language. My current practical experiences as a Marketing Coordinator for our family business, means I bring real-life experience into the classroom.

Many SLC initiatives have already improved the quality of life for many students, and participation is greatly encouraged as a way for you to gain valuable meeting and speaking skills .

Student activitiesTaking part in a range of extra-curricular activities is an important part of student life . At QIBT, we actively encourage you to enjoy time away from your studies and having fun by participating in extra-curricular activities . Griffith University Campus Life organises various events and activities throughout the semester, including social sport matches, free movie nights and lunchtime events such as table tennis competitions .

Transition to Griffith UniversityEach semester, QIBT organises information sessions for students progressing from their Diploma program to Griffith University . These sessions are presented by Griffith staff to provide you with information about admission, programs and transition . Every year, we hold a graduation ceremony for students who successfully complete their foundation and degree programs at QIBT .

Campus security24-hour security is provided on all Griffith University campuses . Security can arrange an escort to take you to your vehicle or on-campus accommodation, particularly on weekends or after dark .

Telephones for contacting security are located around the campus .

6 . Students who are granted Permanent Residency prior to the Census Date for a semester will be charged as a domestic student for that semester providing they submit documentary evidence of their change of visa status . Students who are granted Permanent Residency after the census date, will be enrolled in the following semester as a domestic student providing they submit documentary evidence of their change of visa status .

Fee refund policyOverviewOnce an applicant accepts a place offered by QIBT and pays fees, or submits a request for FEE-HELP, a binding contract is created between the student and QIBT .

A student may cancel their enrolment in a course or program at any point in time . Depending on the timing of that request, a student may be subject to a cancellation charge as outlined in the tables following . For the purposes of this policy, cancellation charges for withdrawal from a program will be based on semester fees which are defined as one full-time semester of study in any program at QIBT (40 credit points) .

Notification of withdrawal from a program must be made in writing to QIBT via submission of the appropriate paperwork and should be done so in consultation with QIBT . Notification of withdrawal from a course must be made in writing to QIBT via submission of a Change of Enrolment form and should be done so in conjunction with the Program Coordinator .

QIBT defines a course as a single subject of study which is completed in one semester . A program is comprised of a number of courses which make up a qualification (eg . Diploma or Certificate) .

No refunds are given for tuition fees unless the student has completed, cancelled or withdrawn from their program . Any overpayment of fees will remain credited towards a student’s account and applied against charges in a subsequent semester .

Timing of refundsA student who believes they are entitled to a refund of fees must complete a Request for Refund Form . Where a student is entitled to a refund of fees under this policy, the refund will be paid within four (4) weeks of receiving the Request for Refund Form . Refunds will be paid in Australian dollars, unless payment in that currency is impracticable . Refunds will be paid to the person who enters into the contract with QIBT (normally the student), unless the person gives a written direction to QIBT to pay the refund to another person .

International students and all certificate studentsFor the purposes of calculating cancellation charges relating to this section of the policy, an international student is defined as one who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of a permanent residency visa . Any student undertaking certificate level programs is also subject to these cancellation charges .

Where a student’s visa renewal is rejected due to a breach in visa conditions, subsequent to them commencing studies at QIBT, the student must withdraw from QIBT and the cancellation fee will be calculated as shown in the table following .

A student who fails to meet the entry requirements for their program and who is therefore forced to withdraw from the program will be charged an administration fee of A$500 .

An international or certificate student who withdraws from a course(s) prior to the census date for that semester will not be liable for tuition fees for that course(s) . The census date for each semester is the end of week four of the semester . Where a student requests withdrawal from a course(s) after the end of week four of the semester, cancellation charges will be calculated as shown in the following table .

An international or certificate student who withdraws from a program prior to the commencement of classes, or after the commencement of classes will be subject to cancellation charges calculated as outlined in the following table:

Domestic Diploma studentsFor the purposes of calculating cancellation charges relating to this section of the policy, a domestic Diploma student is defined as one who is an Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of a permanent residency visa and must be undertaking a Diploma level program .

A domestic student who withdraws from a course(s) prior to the census date for that semester will not be liable for tuition fees for that course(s) or, if applicable, will not incur a FEE-HELP debt for that semester . The census date for each semester is the end of week four of the semester . Where a student requests withdrawal from

a course(s) after the end of week four of the semester, cancellation charges will be calculated as shown in the table below .

Exceptional circumstancesA student whose cancellation of enrolment was due to exceptional circumstances can request that cancellation charges be waived or reduced, and if applicable, request a remission of their FEE-HELP debt . Requests should outline the reasons for the withdrawal and include documentary evidence such as medical certificates to support the request . Requests must be made in writing within 12 months of the date of the withdrawal request or the conclusion of the semester in which the course(s) was undertaken .

Other conditionsQIBT reserves the right to withdraw a program or course(s) from offer at its discretion . If a student is unable to enrol in a similar program or course(s) at QIBT and the enrolment is cancelled, all fees will be refunded .

In the event of default by QIBT as the provider, the provisions of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000, Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Regulations 2001 and the Higher Education Support Act (HESA) 2003 will apply .

Students who dispute QIBT’s decision regarding a refund can lodge an appeal under the Student Fees Grievance Policy to have the decision reviewed . This does not circumscribe the student’s right to pursue other legal remedies or take further action under Australia’s consumer protection laws .

All refunds are paid in Australian dollars . Where it is necessary for QIBT to convert the refund into a currency other than Australian dollars in order for the for payment to be made, it will be converted using the exchange rate on the date the payment is made . QIBT will not be responsible for fluctuations in exchange rates .

A student whose enrolment is terminated by QIBT during the course of a semester as a result of seriously breaching QIBT rules will not be entitled to any refund of fees with respect to that semester .

A student whose enrolment is terminated at the end of a semester will be charged a cancellation fee of A$500 .

A student who fails to re-enrol in a semester by the last day to enrol will be deemed to have withdrawn from their program . Cancellation charges will be applied effective of that date .
