Introduction

International Student Services (ISS) is committed to the internationalization of Bucknell

University by providing support and services to meet the unique needs of international

students and the international campus constituency. ISS seeks to enhance the academic,

cultural and social pursuits of students from abroad through educational and cultural

programs and services in advising, admissions, immigration and related support. ISS is

proud to offer this Enrollment Profile of Bucknell’s international students.

Data Summary

The International Student Enrollment Profile provides overview of international student

enrollment at Bucknell University for the Spring 2014 term. This report includes all

international students, exchange students, and language-teaching assistants at Bucknell

University. This report focuses on students attending the University as “Non-Resident

Aliens.” For reference purposes only, university data on U.S. Permanent Residents and

dual citizens of the U.S. is included on pages six and seven.

International students have played an important role in the history of Bucknell. The first

Burmese student to study abroad in the U.S. came to Bucknell in 1858. Since then

Bucknell has continued to receive international students from many diverse countries

worldwide.

Over the last five years, international enrollment has increased 73% to a total of 229,

demonstrating the increased demand overseas for a quality U.S. education, and the

University’s interest in campus diversity and internationalization.

Current Trend: Over the last five years, Chinese student enrollment has increased 282%,

from 22 to 84 total enrolled students on campus.

Bucknell maintains limited graduate enrollment due to the Carnegie Classification as an

institution with “Very High Undergraduate” enrollment.

International students weave an important part of the campus fabric, majoring in nearly

every discipline available in each college and school.

Campus Diversity

Many international students lead and participate in campus cultural organizations

including: Bucknell Africa Student Association, Burmese Cultural Organization,

Caribbean Students Association, Chinese Cultural Association, Japan Society, Korean

Cultural Association, Middle Eastern Student Association, Organization for Hispanic

and Latin American Students, Russian Culture Society, Students for Asian Awareness at

Bucknell, South Asian Student Association.

Economic Impact

International Education has a significant impact on the world’s economies. In the United

States alone, international students and their dependents contributed approximately $24

billion to the economy through tuition and living expenses.

International students do more than diversify the campus! International students at

Bucknell contributed an estimated $10,283,300 to the Lewisburg, Pennsylvania area

during the 2012-13 academic year. 1
