University of São Paulo is one of the largest and most important institutions of higher education and research in Brazil and Latin America. Founded in 1934, USP is a public state institution (it does not charge tuition fees) and has campi placed in eight cities spread throughout the state of São Paulo. With education and research activities in all academic fields, USP offers 183 undergraduate programs, 269  graduate programs (both Master’s and Doctoral (PhD) degrees) and 984 extracurricular programs. In total, there are about 90 thousand students enrolled in 48 Schools (faculties and institutes) which make up USP. Furthermore, the university houses important museums which receive over 1million visitors per year. In addition, USP runs health centers and two major hospitals. It also works in partnership with Hospital das Clínicas of Ribeirão Preto and Hospital das Clínicas of São Paulo, the later considered one of the leading hospitals in Latin America.

Over 87% of the more than 5,600 professors are full time employees. This reinforces the university’s commitment to achieving excellence in terms of its personnel and of generation of knowledge.

USP’s scientific productivity totals an average of over 25 thousand publications per year, including indexed scientific journals, books, reports etc. This represents a significant proportion of the country’s output. The university is also concerned with the application of discoveries made by its research centers and laboratories, as well as with the effective transfer of these findings to society in general. For this reason many members of the USP community are in permanent partnership with industries, companies, offices and health centers specialized in the development of projects and products and in the practical application of new technologies and products. The university also plays an important role in South America, since it attracts many students, professors and technicians from the neighboring countries and from all parts of the world. USP is an institution that evolves rapidly in its intent towards greater internationalization, which has been accompanied by its ever growing visibility on the world stage. It has signed over a thousand cooperation and exchange agreements with important institutions in the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, and is constantly working towards increasing this number. The university currently welcomes about 1,500 undergraduate and graduate foreign students per year and sends abroad an even bigger number as part of its student mobility program.http://www.usp.br/

SÃO CARLOSLike many other cities of the region, at first São Carlos was largely dedicated to the production of coffee. Subsequently, the changing economy forced modernization and with it came the need to invest in new infrastructure. This, allied to the abundant immigrant workforce (mostly Italians), led to the industrialization of the city. With over 246,000 people*, São Carlos, which has become known for pioneering innovation and an enterprising spirit, came to possess a well-developed urban infrastructure before many other Brazilian cities. Thus it has turned into one of the most representative economies of its region and also a Brazilian landmark in terms of technology and education, having 3 universities (USP, UFSCar and UNICEP).Official website: http://www.saocarlos.sp.gov.br/

SANTOSLocated on the coast of São Paulo and 72 kilometers from the capital, the city, with a population of 434.742 inhabitants*, holds the 5th place in the ranking of quality of life of Brazilian municipalities, according to the Human Development Index (HDI). The Tourism, Services and Fishing sectors are the main part of the Santos economy, but the exploration of an extensive pre-salt layer of oil and gas in the Santos Basin, a discovery announced in 2006 by Petrobras, already causes positive impacts and should be one of the engines in the current decade.Official websites: <http://www.santos.sp.gov.br>

The International Cooperation Office (Agência USP de Cooperação Acadêmica Nacional e Internacional) of University of São Paulo is located on the University’s main Campus, in the city of São Paulo. Its aim is to develop USP’s ever-growing presence in the international scenario. It does so not only by enabling exchange of students, researchers, faculty and staff members, but also by stimulating the University to spread its prolific scientific production to a global level. It also keeps USP’s academic body in permanent touch with the most innovative discoveries around the world, through exchange partnerships that will be profitable for all involved.

AUCANI promotes the mobility of USP’s faculty and students by enhancing cooperation with other universities and by helping with the logistics involved in this activity. The Office also helps international visitors, whether students, professors, or researchers, before and during their stay in São Paulo.

The work of the International Cooperation Office is of major importance to the University, since internationalization is

one of its strategic initiatives. The University welcomes people from all continents and stimulates this

process via networks and partnerships. Students and faculty members thus live in a

multicultural environment.

the Graduate Section of the School where they wish to study. For information on existing Graduate Programs, please go to the website: <http://www.prpg.usp.br/?page_id=19>

Selection ProcessThe International Office only conducts a prior analysis of the received documents in order to accept (or not) the candidate’s application. Further analysis of the information provided by the applicant and his/her possible acceptance are undertaken by the School where he/she intends to study and will take up to approximately 60 days after the subscription deadline.

Health InsuranceDuring his/her stay in Brazil, the foreigner will be allowed to use the services of the Brazilian Public Health System only in case of emergency. For this reason, Universidade de São Paulo demands that students obtain health insurance (travel insurance), which should be purchased in their home country prior to their arrival in Brazil. The insurance policy must be valid for the entire period of intended stay in the country. The choice of one  specific travel insurance or another is the student’s responsibility.

Important! It is not possible for a foreign student to enroll at USP holding a tourist visa, nor is it possible to change the type of visa once already in Brazil or a neighboring country. Under such circumstances, should the need arise to change the type of visa, it will be necessary for the student to return to his/her home country.

Page 40: INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AND RESEARCHER’S GUIDE

After arrivalOnce in Brazil, the foreign student must present himself/herself to the USP International Local Office in order to be introduced to the university and receive instructions regarding the necessary procedures. The International Local Office staff will provide information about:• USP ID card;• Portuguese course enrollment;• Signing up for classes;• Student Single Transportation Card (“Bilhete Único Estudantil”) ,

through the USP Superintendence for Social Assistance (SAS);• Homestay Program

Libraries• USP has 48 libraries located throughout its schools, museums

and research institutes of all campi.
