“Attending class here is an indescribable multicultural experience because most of the students are international and each contributes to their culture, point of view, criticism and experiences. Here, we live diversity in practice. It is beautiful to open the mind to regions of the world little known to us, such as the Asia-Pacific region.”

“My advice to new students is to not be afraid to experience everything, go beyond your comfort zone and get to know other students from different countries and different studies as well. You will be surprised how much this will enrich your life. Also, do not be intimidated by the new difficulties you will face during your studies. Take it as a challenge and look for services that will support your learnings - they are everywhere!”

Selfie time: 2017 Welcome event for International Sponsored Students Our inspiring student speakers: Chowlen Lim (sponsored by JPA Malaysia), Shazia Ruybal (PhD student from Ecuador) and Dani Ardiyanto (sponsored by LPDP Indonesia) with Professor Richard James (Deputy Provost and DVC Undergraduate) at the 2017 Welcome event for International Sponsored Students

WELCOME EVENT FOR INTERNATIONAL SPONSORED STUDENTS

On the 4th of May, over 70 international sponsored students and special guests attended our annual Welcome Event for International Sponsored Students.

In his welcome address, Deputy Provost (Academic and Undergraduate) Professor Richard James reminded students of how special their time at the University is, and acknowledged the hard work and challenges that come with studying in a new country.

“We welcome you to our diverse and vibrant community. To get to where you are today, you haven’t just been on a journey to achieve academic excellence, but also a cultural and social journey, one that may have involved being away from your family and at times taken you out of your comfort zone. This resilience will no doubt serve you well during your time at the University of Melbourne and in the City of Melbourne. I hope you will take this opportunity to make the most of your time at Melbourne for yourself, your family and your home country,” Professor James said.

Attendees heard from three sponsored students who all shared their unique experiences and showcased the range of studyoptions available through sponsors. Shazia Ruybal, a PhD student from Ecuador, shared how her experience as the President of Ecuador Research and Entrepreneurship Network (EREN) had helped her to form strong connections with other students while studying in Australia. Dani Ardiyanto from Indonesia (sponsored by LPDP) discussed the challenges of moving his family from Indonesia and returning to university to study a Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) after many years in the workforce. He credited the support he received from the University services team and from the friends he has made in his class with easing this transition and helping him settle back into student life.

For Chowlen Lim, of Malaysia, (sponsored by JPA) being involved in the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) International and becoming the Cultural and Social Vice President 2016/17 was a vital part of his undergraduate degree. He reflected on the impact that being involved in clubs and societies can have on the student experience and the various skills he gained during his time involved with UMSU International.

Staff from Student Success closed the proceedings by reminding students of all the support and services available to them during their studies and how they are here to ensure students reach their academic potential.

Students from over 20 different countries mingled with each other and our special guest Ms Risa, the Vice-Consul from theIndonesian Consulate General. It was great to see new friendships and connections made that will hopefully last forthe remainder of their student journey at Melbourne and beyond.

You can also read about the event on the Study Australia website.

VISIT FROM THE HIGH COMMISSIONER TO PAKISTAN

The Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, H.E. Margaret Adamson, met with 21 Australia Awards Scholars at the University of Melbourne on 31 March. They were joined by Australia Award alumnus, Mr Tariq Qureshi, who was returning to the University of Melbourne for the first time since completing his Masters in Criminology in 2006. Mr Qureshi is currently serving as a senior officer in the Punjab Government.

The event was an opportunity for students to meet with the High Commissioner, who had farewelled them from Pakistan before they commenced their scholarships. Students also heard from Mr Qureshi on his experience of studying in Australia, and how he has used this experience to progress his career in Pakistan and contribute to Pakistan’s development. POSTCARD FROM MYANMAR - The importance of mentorship in sharing and passing on knowledge

Inset: Dr Kyu Kyu Than and Dr Khine Soe Lin

Dr Khine Soe Lin, Master of Science, 2016Dr Kyu Kyu Than, Doctor of Philosophy (MDHS - Medicine, Dentistry).

The remarkable benefits of mentorship has been evidenced lately in the relationship shared by two University of Melbourne students from Myanmar. Dr Kyu Kyu Tan, a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, mentored Dr Khine Soe Lin during the time they conducted health research at Melbourne’s medical and public health research organisation, the Burnet Institute. Dr Kyu Kyu’s research focuses on essential maternal and newborn interventions inMyanmar and the efficacy of shifting some of these tasks to auxiliary midwives. As a PhD student, Dr Kyu Kyu was given the opportunity to help and mentor other junior students in her field, including Dr Khine Soe Lin. Dr Kyu Kyu credits the University of Melbourne with an excellent research culture and considers it to be one of the best universities in Australia. “Because of this, I was able to not only learn myself, but also to enhance the skills of younger researchers”, she says.

Since completing his master’s degree, Dr Khine has been conducting health research at the Burnet Institute. Dr Khine says he feels energised and eager to undertake new duties for the benefit of his country and his people.

“I’m excited to return to my old job with new insights”, he says.
