Curriculum,Environment,CommunityandCharacter

CurriculumWebelievethatmaintaininganEnglish-languageenvironmentintheclassroomisavitalcomponent of our school’s character. ISO therefore follows an American curriculum(AERO), but draws also on best practices from around the world, focusing on theacquisitionofknowledgeandthedevelopmentofproblemsolving,criticalthinking,andinquiry based skills. The result is a broad, research based, and culturally diversecurriculum delivered in English, emphasizing literacy (reading, writing and oralcommunication), the creative process of the arts andmusic, reasoning in the sciencesandmathematics, thepursuitofaphysicallyactiveandhealthy lifestyle,andtheuseofcurrenttechnologytoenhancethelearninganddiscoveryprocess.

Environment We believe that every aspect of school life is a context for learning. The ISO campusprovidesasecureenvironmentinwhichlearningisnurturedandstimulatedbystudents’experiences inclassroomsand laboratories,on thesports fieldandonstage,duringartcelebrations,communityserviceprojectsandstudentcouncilmeetings–allinthecontextof a community of teachers, students and parents committed to the integrateddevelopmentofitsstudentsasactive,engagedandwell-roundedindividuals.

The school was established in 1976 and is accredited by the Middle StatesAssociationofCollegesandSchoolsintheUnitedStates.ASchoolBoard,electedbyanAssociationofparentsandstaff,governstheschool.

Personnel

The school employs a director, upper school principal, elementary principal and aHead of Educational Technology. In addition, there are 29 full-time teachers andassistants.We also have seven teacher assistants and one science lab assistant. Theschoolbusinessofficeisrunbyafinancemanagerwhoisassistedbyabookkeeper,apurchase manager, and a cashier. The rest of our administrative staff includes twocommunityrelationsofficers(jobshare),anadministrativeassistant,ageneralservicesofficerassistedby13custodians,areceptionist,andaheadofsecurityassistedby26guards.Wehaveonstaffbothtwopart-timeschooldoctorsandafulltimenurse.

Enrollment

Enrollment is approximately 200 students—representing North America, hostcountrynationals,andfromnumerousothercountries.

Facilities

The school is housed and located on a seven acre, purpose-built campus locatedadjacent to the city’s main residential section in Zogona, Secteur 13, Rue 13.22, andPorte 612. The facility is walled and secure. ISO has a large, grassed playing field,dressingrooms,acoveredandlightedmulti-sportcourt,aswimmingpool,andlightedtenniscourt. Thereare11majorbuildingshousing22classrooms,administration,andresource areas, including a library of 9,000 volumes, 2 IT classrooms, 2 ScienceLaboratories,StudentCenter,PerformingArtsCenterandSnackBar.TheschoolhasanADSL for Internetand is completelynetworked.Thereare100computers forstudentuseintheComputerLabs,Library,andclassrooms.

Someofthesportsfacilitiesaregroupedonthesouthsideofthecampustoformarecreation club,which isopen to thechildrenenrolled in the school at nocharge,andtotheirparents.EachISOcommunitymembermaybringoneguesteach.

Finances

Approximately98%oftheschool’sincomeisderivedfromschoolfees.Thereisaone-time registration fee fornewstudents.There is also a separate capital levy fee.Theschool also receives assistance from the United States Government in the form ofservicesaswellasfinancialgrants.

TestingProgram

TheMeasure of Academic Progress (MAP) is a standardized test designed to enableschools to track student’s academic progress during the school year. Based oninternationally recognized reading and mathematical benchmarks, it assessesvocabulary,readingcomprehensionandmathematicalliteracyforstudentsingradesK-11.The testusesabroadculturalbaseandcombinationofmultiple-choiceandopen-endedquestionsandprompts.InadditiontotheMAP,studentsinGrade10and11maytakethePreliminaryScholasticAptitudeTest(PSAT),whilestudentsinGrades11and12taketheScholasticAptitudeTest(SAT)and/ortheACTforuniversityentrance.TheTOEFL(TestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage)exammaybeadministeredtostudentswhose first language is not English. Admissions,Transfers,andWithdrawals

WhennewstudentsarebeingconsideredforadmissiontoISO,thefollowingprocedureswillbefollowed.

The Community Relations Office (CRO) will provide the parentswith the applicationform,health form,andother information.TheElementaryPrincipalwill interviewthestudent and the parents. The fee structurewill be discussedwith the parents by theDirector.Iftheparentsareplanningonenrollingthestudent,arrangementsaremadetotestthestudent’sleveloflearningtoassistintheplacementofthechild.ESOLteachersmaybeconsultedwhennecessary.Thesescreeningtestscannotbescheduleduntiltheadmission form and accompanying documentation is complete and a registration feehasbeenpaid.

The student’s age, previous schooling experience, social and developmental ability,grade or year reports, cumulative records, standardized test results and specialevaluations, etc. – are examined to determine special needs and correct gradeplacement. Admission and grade placement decisions will be conditional until suchtimeastheschoolrecordsaresubmittedorforwardedtotheschooloffice.

Variation in age and grade placement is to be expected, given the wide variety ofschoolsystemsandbackgroundsofISOstudents.Thegoalistofindtheinstructionalenvironment thatwillchallengewhilenot frustrate thestudentbybeingtooeasyortoodifficult.Effortswillbemadetokeepstudentsinareasonableage-peercohort.

Arrangementsforfeepaymentaretobemadepriortothechild’sfirstdayofschool.Parentswillbereferredtotheschool’sBusinessManagertomakethesearrangements.

RetentionandAccelerationThe Director shall decide on the admission, placement, promotion, retention andgraduationofstudentsinaccordancewiththepoliciesestablishedbytheBoard(sectionIV).

In keeping with the Mission, Vision and Beliefs of the International School ofOuagadougou, it is policy to allow students to progress from grade to grade inaccordance with their individual performance. Students will generally be placed inclasseswiththeirageappropriatepeers.Theplacementofstudentsmustbebasedonallthefactorsinfluencingthestudent'sprogressincludingacademic,social,emotionalandphysicalgrowthconsiderations.

When a request is made to accelerate or retain a student, the final decision is theresponsibility of the school Director, who will consult with the parent(s)/guardian,classroomteacher,appropriateStudentSupportServicespersonnelandtheappropriatePrincipal.

Consideration for either acceleration or retention should be initiated earlywithin thecurrent school year (September or October). Late requests (May or June) will not beconsidered for the following August. In such cases, the consultation could commenceduringthefollowingschoolyearandpriortoOctober31stforthesecondsemester.

A childwhowill be four years of age on or before October 1stof the school year forwhich he or she is enrolling will be eligible for enrollment in the four year old Pre-KindergartenClass.AchildwhowillbefiveyearsofageonorbeforeOctober1stoftheschoolyearforwhichheorsheisenrollingwillbeeligibleforenrollmentinthefiveyearoldKindergartenClass.AchildwhowillbesixyearsofageonorbeforeOctober1stoftheschoolyearforwhichheorsheisenrollingwillbeeligibleforenrollmentinthefirstgradeclass.Studentsarefirstplacedwiththeiragepeers.However,allnewstudentsaremonitoredcloselyduringthefirstmonthofschooltoevaluateplacement.Ifthereisanyquestion about correct placement, the classroom teacher along with the Elementaryprincipalwillreview,onacase-by-casebasis,thechild’ssocial,emotional,andacademicmaturity and experiences for possible gradeplacement adjustment, using a variety ofdifferentdata-gathering techniques, includingreadiness tests, classroomobservations,and trial placements. A parent conference will be held to discuss the findings and

AgeRequirements:Grades2-5

Forstudentstransferringintogrades2-5,admissionandgradeplacementarebasedonachievement in reading and mathematics, social and emotional maturity, successfulcompletionofacademicrequirementsatpreviousschools,andteacherobservation. Intheabsenceofcompellingevidencetothecontrary,thestartingpointforplacementisthe same sequence as above, using age-peer cohorts based on October 1st birthdayguidelines. An interview with the elementary principal before commencing school isalsoapre-requisiteofelementaryentry.

StudentsDismissedFromOtherSchools

International School of Ouagadougou reserves the right not to grant enrollment tostudentswhowere dismissed from other schools for academic, disciplinary or otherreasons. Students failing to reveal such a record at the time of enrollment will besubjecttoexpulsionifschoolofficialslearnoftherecord.

EndoftheSchoolYear

The followingprocedures shallbe followedwhenstudents transferat theendof theschoolyear:

A) Parents are required to provide the schoolwith aminimumof twoweeks’ notice,except for graduating seniors. Parents should request a withdrawal form from theschooloffice.B)Parentswillbegiven theirwithdrawalpacket inearly June for completionby thelastdayofthestudent’senrollment.C) Transcripts, report cards, and refunds will not be issued if there areoutstandingaccountsforthestudent.For student withdrawals in the middle of the school year, these proceduresshallbefollowed:

A) Theschoolmustbenotified inwritingof thestudent’s lastdayofschoolatleasttwoweeksinadvance.

B) TheBusinessOfficershalldeterminetheamountoftuitionrefund,ifany,andissueacheck.

C) All teachers will fill out a report card. It is understood that studentsmayoccasionally transfer between the established grading periods. It isimportantthatthehomeroomteacherindicateonthereportcardthedateoftransferandthenumberofdayscompletedinthesemesteroftheschoolyearthatthestudent leaves.Reportcardsareupdatedandprintedonlyattheendofeachquarter.Nocredit(andthusgradepromotion)willbegiventostudentswhodepartpriortoMay15.Curriculumcontentnotyetcoveredistheresponsibilityofthestudent.Finalgradesmaysufferaccordingly.

D) TheCommunityRelationsOfficewillcompleteatransferformandassemblethe materials that are to be given to the parent on the last day of thestudent’senrollment.

AttendanceatISO

PhilosophyandGeneralRegulationsThefoundationforlearningatISOisbasedupontheinteractionbetweenstudentsandteachersand students and students in the classroom. For this reason,webelieve thatthisinteractionisessentialandirreplaceableforsuccessfullearningatISO.Weknowallstudents occasionally miss school due to illness, religious holiday, co-curricularparticipation,orfamilyemergency,butabsencesduetotheseincidentsshouldbekeptto aminimum. There is no replacement for time spent in class. The current schedulemakesagoodattendancerecordevenmorecrucialforsuccess.

At theElementary school level, studentswhoaccumulateexcessive absencesmayberequestedtorepeatthecurrentgrade.ThefinaldecisionrestswiththeDirector/ortheElementary School/or Upper School Principal after consultation with parents andteachers.

Daysmissedasaresultofoutofschoolsuspensionsareunexcusedabsences.Studentswho are absent or late to school must have a written excuse from parents or mustphone the office. This excuse must include the date of absence, the reason for theabsence,andtheparent’ssignature.Parentsshouldcalltheschoolofficebefore8:00AMiftheirchildwillbeabsentthatday.Ifastudentisreportedabsentbythefirstperiodteacher,andnocallisreceivedfromtheparent,theofficewillcallhome.Studentswhoaremorethan15minuteslateforanyclasswillbemarkedabsent.

Absences for reasons other than illness or family emergency must be reported inadvance to the homeroom teacher and the elementary principal. School holidays areprovided for in our school calendar; family holidays that go beyond these days areconsideredunexcusedabsences.

Studentswithunexcusedabsencesmaycompletelong-termprojectsandhomework.Otherworkmaybemadeupatthediscretionofeachteacher.Inmostcases,studentsmaynotmakeupquizzes,tests,orotherclassassignmentsmissedduringunexcusedabsences.

SchoolSponsoredAbsencesStudentsparticipatinginschool-sponsoredactivitiesmusthavewrittenpermissionandmust obtain this permission in compliance with the procedures indicated by theDirector,teacher,orsponsorofthegroupinvolved.Allstudentswillusetransportationprovidedbytheschool.Studentswhomissclassesasaresultofparticipationinschool-sponsoredactivitiesarenotconsideredabsentforthatdayorpartoftheday.Theyarestillexpectedtocompletemakeupworkforclassesmissed,however.(SeeMakeUpWorkbelow)

C) Studentsarestronglyurgedtocompleteasmanyassignments,tests,orquizzesaspossible prior to an extended planned absence. It will be the responsibility ofstudentstoplanamakeupstrategywithteachers.

ArrivingLatetoSchool/ClassStudents who arrive late to school must report directly to the school receptionist.Studentswhoenteraclassafterthestartingtimearetardy.Withadequatetimebuiltintotheschedule, thereshouldbenoexcuseforbeing latetoclass.Astudentshouldhave a note from the receptionist, elementary principal, or school medicalprofessional,ifthetardyistobeexcused.

PermissiontoLeaveSchoolStudents whomust leave campus early may be excused by a written note fromparents/guardian.Thenotemustbepresentedtothehomeroomteacherandschoolreceptionistbeforestudentsreporttotheirfirstclass.

IllnessatSchoolStudentswhobecome illat schoolshouldreport to theschoolmedicalprofessionaloradministrativeassistantaccompaniedbyanotefromtheirteacherorfromtheoffice.Anote from the medical professional or administrative assistant must accompany thestudentbacktoclass.

Academics

WebelievethatmaintaininganEnglish-languageenvironmentintheclassroomisavitalcomponent of our school’s character. ISO therefore follows an American curriculum(AERO), but draws also on best practices from around the world, focusing on theacquisitionofknowledgeandthedevelopmentofproblemsolving,criticalthinking,andinquiry based skills. The result is a broad, research based, and culturally diversecurriculum delivered in English, emphasizing literacy (reading, writing and oralcommunication), the creative process of the arts andmusic, reasoning in the sciencesandmathematics, thepursuitofaphysicallyactiveandhealthy lifestyle,andtheuseofcurrenttechnologytoenhancethelearninganddiscoveryprocess.

Moreover,individualizationof instruction tomeet theneedsof every child is a broad goal of theschool'sinstructionalprogram.Thus,studentsinthesameclassmaybeusingadiversityof materials and may be learning essential skills through a variety of methods andtechniques.

ISOconductsaregularclassroomprogramforPre-Kindergarten(age4) throughgradetwelve.Thebestwaytounderstandyourchild'sprogram,ofcourse,istovisittheschooland to speak with your child's teachers. We always appreciate parental interest andinvolvement.

FrenchInstructionK-5elementarystudentsreceiveFrenchinstructionviaaspecialistteacherwhousestheCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReference (CEFR), ISO’sFrenchmasteryandlevelled program. Elementary students are grouped into classes and according totheirmastery of the French language canmove up (and down) levels as the yearprogresses.

EnglishforSpeakersofOtherLanguages(ESOL)Many elementary students arrive at ISO from non-English speaking backgrounds,thereforeESOLlessonsarerequiredandavailableforthosedeemednecessary.Basedonresearchregardingbestpracticesandlanguagelearning,ourESOLprogrambeginsatGrade2.Aspecialtuitionischargedforthisprogram.StudentswithoutEnglisharegiven intensive ESOL lessons as a substitute for French lessons until such time asexitingtheESOLprogram.

ComputersThe International School of Ouagadougou has a PC and aMAC Lab. Other computersmay be accessed in the Library. Computer instruction is integrated into the ISOprogram in Grades Pre K through 5. In the early years, basic computer literacy andcomputer-assistedinstructionareintroduced;therearealsoMacsand/orPCsineveryclassroom. ISO has a dedicated service line and is networked campus wide for bothInternetandintranetservices.SomeareasofthecampusalsosupportwirelessInternetconnections.AllusersmustsubscribetoISO’s‘StudentUseGuidelines’beforeusingtheInternet.

FieldTrips

Wheremeaningfulandpossible,fieldtripsarepartoftheeducationalprogramatISO.Youwillbenotifiedofthetime,place,andpurposeofthetrip.Foreachtrip,parentsmust sign a permission slip for the student to participate. Students who are notparticipatinginthefieldtripwillbeexpectedtoremainbehindatschool,attendingtheclassesofanothergradelevel.

StudentSupportServices

ISO welcomes all applicants, but parents should note that ISO is not adequatelyequippedtohandlestudentsneedingspecialeducationalprograms.Studentswithmildacademicdeficienciesareaccommodatedinthenormalstreamofclasses,butstudentswith neurological disorders, severe speech impediments, or other challenges, whichordinarilywouldrequiretheservicesofspecialeducationclasses,arenotacceptedatthe schoolunless effective tutorial assistance canbe contracted locally. Parentsmustpay for such added services. All new and transfer students will be tested prior toadmission.Thesetestsmaybeconductedbeforeschoolstarts,iffeasible.Familieswhoareunabletobehereduringthistimeneedtocontacttheschooltomakeothertestingarrangements.Thesetestsareusedtodetermineproperinstructionalplacementandtopredict the ideal level of successful study for prospective students. The administration team helps students deal withacademic difficulties and is available for individual counseling related to self-esteem,problemsolving,socialskills,andothersocialandemotionalconcerns.

The administration team works to help both students and parents understandstudents' abilities, aptitudes, and interests. Assistance is also given to helpstudentschooseandapplytocollegesanduniversities.

LearningSupport Learningsupportisprovidedforstudentswhoexperiencelearningdifficultiesandneedsupportintheirscheduledclasses.Thissupportmaybeinsmallgroups,inclassoroutofclass,forthenecessaryamountoftime.Thefocusisonthestudent’sspecificchallengesinallaspectsofacademicareas.Interventionisdesignedtomeettheindividuallearningneeds while ensuring full access to the curriculum. The goal is to enable students todeveloptheabilitytobecomeindependentlearnersanddiminishtheirlearningbarriers.

Childrenarereferredasneedsariseorthroughidentificationatapreviousschool.Afterenrollment at ISO, teachers or parents can make a referral to the Student SupportServicesTeam(SSS). Followingthereferral,observation,assessmentanddiagnosisarecompleted. If support is needed, an International Individual Learning Plan (IILP) iscreated with appropriate goals for the student. These goals are reviewed with thestudent,parent,andteachersonaregularbasisthroughouttheschoolyear.

TransitionProgram:“MovetotheMiddle”In recognition of the fact that the transition from the self-contained Elementaryclassroom to the departmentalized secondary school classroom can cause studentsanxiety, ISO has developed a transitional program for “rising” sixth-graders. Thisprogram,called “Move to theMiddle”, isheld in Juneof thestudent’s fifthgradeyear.Fifth grade students are assigned aMiddle School “buddy,”whom they accompany toMiddleSchoolclasses.Discussionsessionsarescheduledtogivefifthgradersandtheirparentsanopportunity toask theMiddleSchool facultyandadministrationquestionspertaining to their expectations, workloads, schedules, activities, and any other

ClassRankISO does not subscribe to the policy of ranking students in order of academicachievement.Weinsteadshareanunderstandingthatsuchpracticesarecountertotheneed to develop intrinsic habits and a love of life-long learning. The school, therefore,does not report the rank of its students, except when required or advantageous forcollegeorotherelementaryschooladmissions.

EducationalMaterials

The teaching materials at ISO are current publications with most originating in theUnitedStates.Allstudentsareissuedmost,ifnotall,theeducationalmaterialsrequiredfortheirlearningprogram.Exceptionstothiswouldincludephysicaleducationclothing,calculators,flashdrives,pencils,pens,andnotebooksfordifferentsubjects.Allstudentsareresponsibleforthepropercareoftheirworkbooksandtextbooks.Theworkbooksare the students’ property, but textbooksmust be returned, in good condition, to theschool at the end of the school year or at the time of withdrawal. In case of loss ordamage, replacement costs will be charged. Students will be expected to return thespecifictextbookassignedtothemwhenbooksarecollected.

TheISOAssociationAllparentsoffull-timeISOstudentsareautomaticallymembersoftheISOAssociation.TheAssociationholdstwoformalmeetings,oneonthesecondTuesdayofNovemberandoneon thesecondTuesdayofMay.Thisyear, thesedateswillbeNovember15,2016,andMay9,2017.

HotWeatherPolicyThehotseasoninOuagadougouisfromMarchtoMaywithAprilbeingthehottestofthemonths.During this time theheat is a “dry”heat rather than an elevatedheatwith high humidity. Burkina Faso is a sub-Saharan country with higher annualtemperatures,thusthereisaneedtofindwaystoadapttotheheatorfollowbasicprinciples when working and playing outdoors. ISO staff members are trained torecognize heat stress and to respond appropriately. Students are informed on aregularbasis throughout theschoolyear tobringwaterbottles toschool.Studentsarealsotaughttheappropriatestepstorecognizeandpreventheatstress.Duringthehotseason,greaterattentionwillbemadetopreventextendedperiodsofactivityduringthehottestpartoftheday,aswellasgivingincreasednumberofwaterandrestbreaks.AsBurkinaisasunnyandhotcountry,itisimportantforfamiliestoremembertohavetheirchildrenwearappropriateclothing,applysunscreen,andtodrinkplentyofwater.ISOprovides drinking fountains on campus, but it is important for students to bringwater bottles aswell, especially for PE classes, afterschool activities, and for athleticpractices.

Ifyouhaveanygrievances,youshould firstcontactyourchild’s teacher,especially toresolve problems in the class. EspeciallyforStudents

DrinkingWaterDue to the limitations of our facility, it is impossible for us to provide boiled/filtereddrinking water for our students. The well water at ISO is healthy and is regularlychecked.EventhoughISOprovidesdrinkingfountainsoncampus,pleaseseethatyourchild brings a good supply of drinking water each day. The climate is hot, and it isimportantforyourchild'shealthtohaveenoughtodrink.Besurethatnamesareclearlymarkedonwaterjugswithindelibleink.

SportsISO students have the opportunity to engage in a variety of sporting activities duringand after school hours. Softball, tennis, swimming, dodgeball, karate, touch rugby,soccer,badminton,volleyballandbasketballaresomeoftheorganizedsportsthatwillbeofferedthisyear.InformationontimesandagelimitswillbepublishedintheTurtleTalkandviaspecialannouncementssenthomeduringtheschoolyear.

HomeworkExpectationsTo reinforce classroom learning, students will be responsible for homework on aregular basis. The amount given varies, of course, with the age and grade of theindividualstudent.Thelengthoftimethathomeworktakestocompletedependsuponthe student's concentration and study habits, and understanding of the material.However, students need to realize that homework is a vital part of their schoolresponsibilities. Studies show that homework is one of themost important factors ineducationalachievement.

Parents can contribute to the success of their children's academic experience byproviding a supportive atmosphere for the completion of homework exercises. Thisincludes a quiet, attractive workspace within the home, a set homework scheduleduring the day, and reinforcing the teachers' and school's expectation that thehomework assigned will be completed. ExtraHelpStudents may request extra help from teachers when needed. StudentUseGuidelines–TheUseofComputersandTheInternetAll members of the ISO community: students, teachers, administrators, and staff, areexpectedtoabidebythetermsofthisAgreement.Thebehaviorsoutlinedinthispolicyapply to all technologies used in the ISO environment, regardless of ownership ormethodofconnectivity.Digital Citizenship:All users of technology are expected tomaintain high standards ofdigitalcitizenship.Thisincludesthefollowing:Legality:Users will neither introduce nor make use of illegal content within ourenvironment.Thisincludesdownloadingpiratedsoftware,accessingbannedorblockedsites,usingsoftwareorappsthatareprohibited,andusingourresourcesforanyillegalactivity.Copyright:Userswillrespectallrelevantcopyrightlaws.Thisincludescitingworksandimagesappropriately,andavoidingplagiarism.Security:Users are expected to take necessary steps to protect their own and others'digital security. This means users should not post personal information, photos, lastnames,addressesoranyotheridentifyinginformationwithoutexplicitpermission.Theyshould also never share their passwords inappropriately, nor should they attempt toaccesssomeoneelse'saccount.Harassmentandcyberbullying:These are seriousoffenses andwill bedealtwith at thehighest levels. If anyone feels that they are the victimof harassment or cyberbullying,they should notify a teacher immediately. Incidents that involve ISO students, even ifthey occur off-campus and outside of our network, still reflect on ISO and thereforeschoolbehaviorguidelinesapply.PreservationofResources:Digitalresourcesat ISOare intendedforeducationalusebyallmembersofourcommunity.Weexpectalluserstotakestepstopreserveandprotecttheseresources forcommunaluse.Recreationaluse (Facebook,YouTube,gaming,etc.)should never displace educational use…either when making use of computerworkstations,orwhenoccupyingbandwidth.Whilenotexpresslyprohibited,staffmayprohibit students from using technologies at any time when they feel that studentbehaviorsmaybedistractingtothemselvesorothers,orresourcesarenotbeingsharedappropriately.Bandwidth:Thisisperhapsourmostvaluablesharedresource.Toprotectbandwidthforall users, students and teachers are prohibited from downloading or streaming largemediafilesduringschoolhours,andareprohibitedfrommakinguseofTorrentingand

otherbandwidth-hoggingprotocols.Careofresources:Usersarerequiredtobediligentinprotectingphysicalresources.Thisincludes keeping keyboards and mice clean (not eating or drinking when usingcomputers), ensuring they do not damage cables, devices or furniture, being cautiouswith headsets and other peripherals, not losing devices, and reporting any damagesimmediately.Ifsuchdamageistheresultofstudentnegligence,theymayberequiredtopayreplacementcosts.Data:While ISO takes steps to provide backups of certain files, ultimately thepreservationofdataistheresponsibilityoftheuser.UnauthorizedUse:StudentsandstaffshouldnotprovideaccesstoISOdigitalresourcestoany unauthorized persons. This includeswifi passwords, aswell as access to physicaldevices.Agreement to Follow Protocols:All users agree to follow all protocols and guidelinesconcerning the use of digital resources at ISO, and accept all responsibility to remainawareofanychangesorupdatesinguidelines.Communication:ISOmakesuseofeachuser'sISOdomaingmailaccountastheprimarymeansofelectronic communication. All students are expected to check their email regularly to stayabreastofinformationcommunicatedbytheirteachers,theCRO,andotherAdministrators.

OurSpecialActivities

AfterSchoolActivities(ASAs)ISOstudentsparticipateinavarietyofclubactivities,whichchangefromyeartoyearaccording to the resources in the community. During the week there is an ASAProgram. Several sports are frequently offered aswell as various clubswhich haveranged fromCircusClub,Badminton,Soccer,TouchRugby,Guitar,Karate,PianoandArts and Crafts. (Parents are encouraged to offer their services as sponsors ofactivities for students at the school. An after-school activity schedule includingcostingsetc.willbesenthomewithyourchildbeforeorasclosetothebeginningofeachquarter.)TheschoolhostssignupsessionsquarterlytoenrollintheseASAs.

BurkinabéStudyTripsPre-Kthrough5thGradeplanfieldtripsthroughouttheyearthatrelatetocurriculum.The teacherplans the trip, arranges for transportationandhaseach student fill out apermissionformwhichistobesignedbytheparentsallowingthestudenttoparticipatein the field trip. Parents and individuals with expertise will be invited to join thestudentsontheseoutings.Acodeofconducthasbeenestablishedtobereadandsignedbythestudentandparents.Apermissionslipmustbesignedbytheparentsinorderforthestudenttoparticipateinthetrip.

CommunityServiceandServiceLearningProgramsAll ISOstudentsareencouragedtoparticipateintheschool'sCommunityServiceandService Learning Programs. Fundraising activities like a yearly Walk-A-Thon forexampleareorganized tocollect funds forworthyprojects.Donations (clothing, toys,etc.)arecollectedthroughouttheyearandaretypicallydonatedtolocalorphanages.

StudentCouncilElementary students organize a Student Council each year. Student Council provideschannels through which ideas for activities and concerns from students can beexpressed.TheStudentCouncilsplanactivitiesforthebenefitandenjoymentoftheISOstudentsandcommunity.Someactivitieshaveincludedmonthlyhangouts,SpiritWeek,talentshows,movienights,specialfundraising,annualdances,tournaments,andgamenights.
