Me encanta España.

Fania tuvo cincuenta mil y Lady Gaga treinta mil. Luego, la salsa vive.

Tell us about your surroundings growing up, I understand that your had a musical family. As I was growing up, while my friends were outside playing with their friends in the neighborhood, I was locked in my room practicing all the instruments that were available to me at the time. Then my father would come home from work and criticize everything I had worked on that day (Very frustrating). My family was in charge of the music ministry at church so a lot of my development as a musician occurred in the church. There, I was able to put to the test everything I had worked on during the week and observe the congregation's reactions. I was surrounded by music 24/7. If I wasn't practicing, then I was listening to my mom and grandfather sing old "boleros" as they cooked. It was a beautiful childhood.
Tell us about your Sabado Gigante performance ( I would like to find a video) I went on two occasions. The first time was a at age 8 and was my first experience as a young artist in the spotlight. I was amazed at how great it felt to be spoiled as a result of being blessed with talent. On the show, I performed the piece "El Rey del Timbal" by Tito Puente where I did a drum solo that would earn the respect of many and lead me to perform with El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico and Marc Anthony later on that night at Casa Blanca night club in Miami, Florida. The second time I was 12 and this time around I was invited to perform along with Cristian Del Real of Colombia who also is a percussionist. Together, we performed the song "Timbalero" by El Gran Combo and each took a timbale solo even though it was quite difficult to concentrate because there were like 12 extremely beautiful girls dancing around us on the stage. I have the videos and they will soon be posted on the web. The recording needs to still be transfered from VHS to digital.
Why did you decide to study music outside of Florida and why did you decide on Puerto Rico? When it was time for me to go to college, I had my hopes set on two schools even though I applied to like 12 of them. Those two schools were University of Miami and the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. Many of the artists I admire graduated from these schools and I wanted to be like them and fortunately I was accepted to both. I had to make a decision and I chose Puerto Rico. It was less expensive in every aspect, more exciting for I would be away from parents, and I thought I would have a better chance of playing more frequently with my idols.
What attracted you to salsa? Honestly, I don't know. I guess it was the first genre of music I was introduced to and since everyone seems to be having a blast while either performing, dancing, or just listening to it, I decided I wanted to feel the level of happiness I saw everyone else had. Who is your salsa master? Since I am a multi-instrumentalist, I'm allowed to have more than one salsa master depending on the instrument. But in regards to salsa singers or soneros, My ultimate favorite is Cheo Feliciano.
From where do you draw your inspiration? I draw my inspiration from my dreams and hopes for life. When I'm on stage, I find inspiration in the musicians and people that surround me. I feed off of other's energy and contributions to music.
What has been you most memorable performance and with whom were you performing? That would have to be my performance in Madison Square Garden during the "I Love Salsa Tour" in 2006 where I performed with Cheo Feliciano and many other artists while I was still part of N'Klabe, a very popular salsa band of the time.

Talk to us about this project – music, lyrics, composition, inspiration, production… (all details) This project, 1st Intent, began in Puerto Rico in 2005. I had a 5-piece band called "Afinque" which was the house band of NuyoRican Cafe in San Juan and we began exposing my compositions there. I noticed the club was always packed when Afinque played and we were blowing up in the underground salsa scene in Puerto Rico. At first, I could only come up with melodic catch phrases on the microphone until one day I was dared to free-style on the topic of being jealous by the bass player, Jacob Ortiz. I couldn't decline the dare in order to keep my pride so I "free-styled" and the crowd went wild. From that moment on I was no longer scared to put words to all of the melodies that were flowing around in my head. Little by little the band fell apart for various reasons and I quit pursuing my musical dreams due to depression and frustration and joined the United States Marine Corps. While in training, I realized I had made a huge mistake in joining the military and on my off time, I worked on the musical arrangements and lyrics of the songs I would record on my album. I would always ask my comrades in my training platoon for their opinion on my songs and they always gave me good reviews. By the time I graduated Marine Combat Training, I had come up with my album title and 10 songs ready to be recorded in a studio that I would make in my apartment in San Diego, California thanks to Uncle Sam. Since I play every instrument necessary to perform a decent salsa song, I took it upon myself to record each instrument individually including vocals until I felt it was ready to be released. The only aspect of my album that wasn't done by me alone was the recording of the background vocals where I used the voices of Ricky Porrata, Nestor Martinez, and Dante Loaiza to make the perfect blend of sound qualities for my "coros." After I was done with the musical aspect of the album, I handed the project over to Michael Parrot, A very respected Audio Engineer of the Marine Corps, for mixing and then presented it to the company, Born A Musician, for mastering and Distribution. Since then, I've been on a mission to open the ears and minds of salseros to this new alternative I call Urban Salsa.
Do you have any upcoming presentations? I will be performing all around Southern California and Puerto Rico through October. Check out my website, www.carlitossanchez.me, for all future events. What is your next step? My next step is to present my music to audiences outside of the US, South America, and Europe enticing them to fall in love with my art. Anything else you would like people to know? I want people to stay tuned to my websites and the media. There will be many surprises arising very soon.

No importó.

¡Quién iba a creerlo!

THE HISTORY OF TIPDI
This is actually our first year! I am a classically trained dancer, who also danced Argentine Tango for many years. I taught in Asia and Europe, and danced with a company in Argentina. For the last year or so, I have been focused on West Coast Swing and Zouk. I also dance some Salsa on 2 and Rueda. My co-director was a very popular Lindy Hop and Ballroom teacher in Boston during the 90s and early 2000s. He decided to take some time off to earn a second Master's Degree in Education Policy from Columbia University. He is now writing a series of books on how to teach partner dance, and teaching workshops. We decided to combine our various backgrounds to create an event that would give partner dancers the opportunity to cross-train. At most classical dance conservatories or camps, ballet and modern dancers take partner dance classes. However, partner dancers rarely experience anything outside of their particular partner dance, especially if they began dancing as adults. We felt that should be addressed, so we created TIPDI. What is The International Partner Dance Intensive (TIPD)I? TIPDI is a week-long multi-dance intensive for ages 18+. Our goal is to create better all-around partner dancers in a friendly, intensive, conservatory-like environment. It's all dance, all the time, out in the woods in central Maine. (Unlike most dance conservatories, however, we have a swimming pool next to the dance studios!) At TIPDI, you can get away from everything, and focus on becoming the kind of dancer you have always wanted to be.

At TIPDI, you will immerse yourself in a week of super friendly, highly rigorous, non-competitive dance training for adults. You will take daily, tracked classes from world-class instructors in Salsa, Argentine Tango, and West Coast Swing. And to hugely enhance your flexibility, lines, style, power, and presence, you will also take daily classes in Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, and Afro-Haitian dance from three of New York City’s top teachers. Seven days of cross-training in all six dance forms. We will also have evening workshops in everything from body conditioning to Contra-dance, and every night will end with hours of social dancing, with separate rooms for Salsa, West Coast Swing, and Argentine Tango. TIPDI is unique in the world. So we are inviting the whole world to come! You will have a truly international partner dance experience. We already have dancers coming from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and (we hope) Australia. We look forward to having you join us! Young dancers attend dance intensives for three to twelve weeks every summer. It's easy to envy them. Secretly, you know you want to have that true dance camp experience where you can just be a dancer all day long, too. TIPDI is the answer.
So what is The International Partner Dance Intensive, or TIPDI?
TIPDI is dance camp for adults. TIPDI is dance camp for YOU!!

GRAMMY 2013 POST MORTEM
I watched the 2013 edition of the Grammys last night. It was an overly long show full of the good and ugly moments that make up the Grammys. Among the fine surprises were the tribute to Bob Marley which included Bruno Mars, Sting and Rhianna along with Marley's sons Ziggy and Damian....Blues rock titans The Black Keys joined by a colorful Dr. John in full New Orleans voodoo headdress along with the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band....Jazz masters Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Kenny Garrett jammin' without a drummer...so sublime! Who could also forget JLo's leg, Katy Perry's cleavage, Nas's cool tux, Ellen DeGeneres making Beyonce nervous, Folk revivalists Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers demonstrating why they are hot right now, Wiz Kalifa's cool take on the 80's Boy George hat, guest presenter Prince making a fashion statement in black hoodie ensemble and carrying a silver cane and Juanes showing off his singer/songwriter side in English.
There were plenty of cheesy moments that was the subject of all my facebook friends who were wickedly putting down the badly sung songs, the blown jokes by star presenters who should know better and all the other absurdities that was part of the broadcast. But isn't that what The Grammys are all about? Not really. There were categories that we didn't see on TV that were important to some of us. It would have been nice to see some Latin music in the mix this year. Some of our fine local artists, musicians and producers in all genres were nominated this year. They didn't make it to 3 1/2 hours of television glitz. What the Grammys are is just entertainment. The real substance behind the music and the most exciting music out today doesn't make it to our TV screens. For a fleeting moment, host LL Cool J's throwback to hard core rap with Public Enemy's Chuck D, guitar whiz Tom Morello, dj QTip and Blink 42 drummer Travis Barker just made it before the closing credits were ran. That's the Grammy's for you.

ROBERTO BORRELL MUSICIAN - DANCER - TEACHER
"TO DANCE WELL IS THE MOST MARVELOUS THING THAT EXISTS"
Thirty-five years of performing and instructing Afro-Cuban Folkloric Dance and Cuban Popular Dance has enabled Roberto Borrell to develop a unique and entertaining style of teaching. At a time when elegance and style counted for everything Roberto Borrell turned the nights on fire dancing to the intricate rhythms of great Cuban performers such as Chappottin, Orquesta Aragon and Neno Gonzalez. He learned to dance during the heyday of the legendary Havana Social Clubs. Perfecting what is known as Cuban Popular Dance, Roberto became a master of Danzon, Son, Son-Montuno, Guaracha and the Cha-Cha-Cha.
When Roberto was 18 he was noticed by Cuba's Conjunto Folklorico Nacional and asked to join the celebrated performance group. In a trial by-fire situation he was schooled in the traditional Orisha songs, dances and rhythms by the most renowned Afro-Cuban folkloric dancers and percussionists of the time. His innate talent and facility for learning allowed him to start performing with the group immediately. As Roberto continued to develop his performance skills he began to cultivate his abilities as a choreographer and musical director. Starting as the orchestra leader for his own group in Cuba , Union Cienfueguera, through to his highly successful San Francisco based orchestra, Moderna Tradcion, he continued to direct musical groups and shows for over 30 years. By the time Roberto left Cuba he had developed a wealth of knowledge and a diverse mastery of Cuban music and dance which also included dancing Rumba en la calle, excelling in playing the Bata for Tambores (Yoruba religious ceremonies), choreographing for Carnival and performing on the National Stage. In order to get the highly tuned performances that he required for his shows, Roberto began to train the dancers and musicians himself. Once in New York, Roberto focused his energy on teaching. With an authentic historic perspective, he worked on creating a meticulous method of teaching that combines music and dance with the evolution of Cuba's musical history. He teaches his students how to listen; one of the most valuable skills that a dancer can have. Along with a surplus of charm and charisma, Roberto has a generosity of spirit that transpires and inspires all of his students.

The Seven
Spiritual Steps
Of Dancing Salsa A practical guide
to dance with your Spirit
Authored by Alex Sosa
The purpose of this book is to guide Salsa dancers to have a
conscious spiritual experience whilst dancing, bringing
awareness of what is really happening inside the dancer's
mind and body during that magical moment when the body
is connected and moving to the rhythm of the music. It is to
guide the dancer to not just dance with the body but to
dance with the Spirit; at the end, it is the Spirit which moves
our bodies.
This is the first book in the Salsa market that explain to the
dancer what is really happening inside his mind and body
from a spiritual point of view, helping the dancer to connect
the outside or physical body with the inside or spiritual one,
to finally become one in love, peace and harmony with
himself, and to achieve the greatest happiness for the dancer
and for the people around him, it is a changing life book.
FIRST: Remember at all times that you don't have two left
feet. You are powerful beyond imagination. Be positive and
confident about yourself.
SECOND: Be grateful for the creation of your body, and also
for the possibility to be able to communicate through it and
express your emotions dancing with other people. Enjoy
your journey.
THIRD: Open your mind and see energy around you, with
you, and inside you. Improve your dance with the
understanding of yourself; knowing that you are energy,
dance with your Spirit. Remember: E=mc2 (everything is
energy).
FOURTH: Remember that your emotions are an energy
system given to you to guide you to a personal realization,
listen to them and be a happy dancer.
FIFTH: Everything in the universe is interconnected and
moving in synchronicity like a clock, and that is rhythm.
Keep it that way, dance in Clave.
SIXTH: We are humans. We are social beings by nature.
Don't be shy and ask others for a dance, help others to
decide asking them for a dance. Time gone is happiness
gone.
SEVENTH: Become what you really want. Make people
happy on the way to your happiness. Dancing for others is
dancing with your Spirit.
