A-Plant’s 300-unit orderUK-based rental company A-Plant this year made a 300-unit order for a range of Doosan Portable Power’s portable air compressors, in a deal worth £3 million (€3.56 million).

A-Plant’s order comprises over 300 Doosan models, including around 60 of its Dual Mode 7/73-10/53 and 7/124-10/104 models.

The balance of the A-Plant order is made up of 7/20, 7/26EG, 7/41 and 7/41G single- and two-tool models, as well as the new 10/174 model, which is Doosan’s largest single axle portable compressor.

Andrew Hatton, business director, EMEA, for Doosan Portable Power, said, “We are delighted to win the new A-Plant order, which shows great confidence in the product range and the aftermarket service we offer.

“This is the biggest order yet for the new 7/124-10/104 Dual Mode compressor and along with the 7/73-10/53 model, the growth in the numbers of these Dual Mode models in the A-Plant compressor fleet is a perfect demonstration of the benefits this concept brings to the rental industry.”

Doosan said its portable compressors – the 7/73-10/53 and 7/124-10/104 – provided a two-for-one rental solution, which replaced the need to have two different sized models in the fleet and offered greater operational flexibility for both A-Plant and its customers.

The HardHat canopy protects vital internal components and ensures its performance and appearance is strong throughout its lifetime.

The XATS 137 models also provides extended service intervals since its upgrade, to 1,000 hours, or once every two years on average. The engine, meanwhile, requires a service at 500 hours, or once a year on average.

The bodywork on the XATS 138 is also protected by a three-layer corrosion resistance system, including a zincor, primer and a powder coating. Meanwhile, a spillage-free frame, which is fitted as standard, is guaranteed to contain all fluids.

Portable equipment manufacturer Allmand Bros, based in the US, has also expanded its product range of portable compressors, which it announced at this year’s US rental-dedicated exhibition, The Rental Show.

The products include the MA185 and MA400 Maxi-Air portable air compressors, which are said to offer consistent, high-pressure air volumes at low RPMs, enhancing fuel efficiency.

The bigger of the two models, the MA400 Maxi-Air, is available only in Canada, while its smaller MA185 model is available in North America.

Both models feature an electric fuel primer and air bleed pump, curbside fluid maintenance, an externally mounted water separator filter, and a fibre gear coupler.

Excellent reputationBrian Northway, Allmand product manager, said of the products, “Allmand is focused on providing reliable, high-quality products to help our customers manage their jobsites.

“With the Maxi-Air range, we're expanding our presence in the construction, rental, oil, gas

and mining markets – areas where Allmand already maintains

an excellent reputation for durable, easy-to-maintain products.”

With new products entering the market and more to come in 2018, IRN discovers a very lively portable compressors sector.

I n a product type which is limited by various regulations that must be adhered to, portable air compressors provide a stern test to

manufacturers competing to claim the best product on the market.

That hasn’t stopped many manufacturers launching new-and-improved products, though, and Doosan Portable Power is just one of those. Its newest model, namely the 14/144 single-axle compressor, joins a host of new enhancement features by the company, which aim to improve its other models on the market.

Its new model is the largest in its single-axle range and offers a bunded base as standard, as well as a

well-positioned fuel tank, featuring a large size filler to limit the risk of fuel spillage.

It is powered by a Cummins QSB6.7 6-cylinder diesel engine producing 168 kW of power at a full load speed of 2,000 rpm. The 14/144 supplies a free air delivery of 14.0 m³/min at a rated operating pressure of 13.7 bar.

EnhancementsIn terms of other enhancements, the company now offers a new 8.5 kVA generator option to meet specific requirements of the latest fusion welding equipment. It provides electrical power that can also be used for lights and tools, together with compressed air for powering breakers and other pneumatic equipment.

The generator option is available on two machines – the 7/31+ model, providing a free air delivery of 3.0 m3/min at an output pressure of 7 bar. The 8.5 kVA generator option is also available on the larger 7/41+ portable compressor, supplying 4.0 m3/min of compressed air at 7 bar output pressure.

Atlas Copco is another manufacturer which has recently launched a new model. It has updated its XATS 138 single-axle portable air compressor product.

To achieve this, it combined its PACE technology with its HardHat polyethylene canopy, which is said to now offer rental fleet operators a “compelling mix” of toughness of versatility, according to the company.

Meanwhile, Czech Republic-based company Atmos says it has launched a new solution to help tackle the problem which Stave IV diesel engines have cast upon portable air compressors.

Said to be based on the concept developed by Caterpillar’s engine division, Atmos has designed its models with oversized engines that work on the optimal point of fuel consumption on the engine speed curve.

Oustanding lifetimeAs a result of its solution, the full load engine speed is now only 1,800 rpm, which Atmos says contributes to an outstanding compressor lifetime. At partial load, the machine can be operated in ECO-mode at 1,500 rpm, which brings additional fuel savings.

Atmos produces two models, which are both driven by Caterpillar engines. The PDC90, equipped with the CAT C4.4 engine, has a free air delivery of 7.5-12 m3/min at overpressures from 7 to 14 bar. The PDP190, meanwhile, which includes the CAT C 7.1 engine, runs from 19.9-25.2 m3/min, with pressure levels of 8.6, 10, 12 and 14 bar.

One to watch out for next year is Sullivan-Pallatek. The company will launch its D400PHHJD4 portable compressor model in 2018, which is described as a versatile dual pressure/dual capacity unit, delivering 11.3 m3/min at 215 psi, or 12.7 m3/min at 100 psi.

At its core, the new model features a 129 kW John Deere Tier 4 final engine and a large 163 mm twin screw air end, which has been engineered and manufactured by the company itself.

Other features to look out for will include a full containment frame, remote drains, lockout aftercooler capability, large 80 gallon fuel tank, exterior lit fuel fill, fuel saving and a noise reducing clutch fan. It will also boast a durable galvanneal enclosure exterior, with a powder-coated finish for rust and corrosion resistance.

The compressor is also equipped with the SPEC full service electronic controller, with digital readouts of everything from compressor temperature to aftercooler filter warnings. The controller also features the models complete parts and service list for ease of maintenance, says the company.

Germany-based Kaeser Kompressoren, meanwhile, says its Mobilair M 20 model is the ideal choice for powering equipment such as breakers and impact borers.

The model is best suited to operation in temperatures ranging from -10°C to +45°C, though a low-temperature version is also available for use in colder conditions.

Versatility is also further enhanced due to the chassis, which can be equipped with a fixed or height adjustable tow bar, as well as with or without an overrun brake.

The M20 model has an operational weight of less than 460kg, and a 30 litre diesel fuel tank.

The company also ensured, when manufacturing the product, that the air filters were specifically tailored to suit the required air demand and therefore ensured dependable system operation, it said.

US-based Sullair, which is owned by Hitachi Group, offers its 600H double-axle, Tier 3 rotary screw portable air compressor, which delivers 17 m3/min at 10 bar.

The model is powered by either a Caterpillar or John Deere engine, at the choice of the customer. It boasts three mounting options of either 2-wheel, single-axle or less running gear.

The company’s 600H model also includes independent rubber torsion suspension, wheel bearing grease fittings, and a lockable curbside instrument panel. In addition, it features a pneumatic inlet valve and 0 to 100% capacity control.

French manufacturer Mac3 also offers a range of portable compressors, and the company designs and manufacturers every part of its models, other than the engine.

Its range of portable compressors range from 2 m3/min to 5 m3/min, operating at 7 bar. All its products are powered by Kubota water-cooled diesel engines.

The company’s range is the MSP range, and the six models in the range are the MSP 2000, MSP 2200, MSP 2500, MSP 2800, MSP 3200 and MSP 5000.

All its models are available with a fully-bunded base for on-site spill containment. A solution for the removal of engine and compressor oil during service intervals on the bunded base is the well-situated access base drain plugs, which Mac3 says makes oil changes a quick, clean and simple operation.

Last, but at no means least, Italian manufacturer Rotair offers its MDVS line of diesel-powered portable air compressors, which range from an output of 10-25 m3/min. The company’s range consists of ninemodels, with different options per model.

Features for all of its models in the range include low acoustic pressure levels as indicated in the current legislation provisions, low emission outputs, and a liquid cooling system for the engine, which is said to be a silent, low-pollutant range of products. IRN
