Explore Chichester

Chichester is a beautiful,historic city in thecounty of West Sussexon the south coast of England.

The city of Chichester has a widevariety of restaurants, cafés, barsand entertainment venues.Shopping in Chichester is a pleasantexperience. There is an array of highstreet, designer and boutique shops,plus a variety of markets throughoutthe year. Close by you’ll find largercities to visit and London is only 90minutes away.

Beyond Chichester you’ll find manyinteresting historic sites to exploreon foot, by bicycle or by car. Thesurrounding area offers the perfectcombination of countryside, coast,bustling cities and traditional English villages.

The South Downs National Park is close by so there are plenty ofoutdoor activities on offer, fromwalking and horse riding toexploring cycle routes, while thecoastline provides sailing, watersports and relaxing beaches.

Our Bishop Otter campus at ChichesterBishop Otter campus dates back to 1839 and is surrounded byextensive parkland, playing fields,and well-maintained grounds.

Chichester has recently invested innew learning resource and sportsfacilities and here you’ll also find on-site accommodation, a theatre,restaurant, café, an award-winningbar and student shop.

This campus is where you’ll belearning if you are studying one ofour arts, humanities, social scienceor sport programmes and is only 20 minutes by bus to our othercampus in Bognor Regis.

Explore Bognor Regis

Bognor Regis is a Royaltown next to the sea,famed for its beach andknown as the ‘sunshinecapital’ of the UK.

Bognor Regis claims to have themost hours of sunshine of any placein the United Kingdom and is apopular destination for sun-seekers.

You’ll find traditional seaside cafes,plenty of beachside attractions, anhistoric park and gardens, as well asa choice of high street shops, bars,restaurants and nightclubs. Insummer there are music and arts festivals.

The campus is a short walk fromthe seaside, and during term timeyou can often see studentspeacefully making the most of thefresh sea air by studying on thebeach with their books or justrelaxing with friends.

Our Bognor Regis CampusThe Bognor Regis Campus is whereyou’ll be learning if you are studyingone of our business courses, Englishlanguage, musical theatre oreducation programmes.

A central feature on the campus isthe prominent 18th-century buildingknown as The Dome which housesour business school. Eight millionpounds has been invested toupgrade the building into a vibrantbusiness and research centre withultra-modern, high-specificationeducation and business facilities.

The Dome was originally built as a royal seaside palace for King George III, but now houses our business school.

Our modern Bognor Regis Campushas a brand new Learning ResourceCentre (opened in 2012) withmodern facilities and well-equippedteaching and study rooms.

We offer a range ofprogrammes in the arts,business, education,humanities, socialsciences and sport.

Undergraduate programmesThe table on pages 22-23gives an overview of our full-timeundergraduate courses and shows our typical A-level entryrequirements but we also accept avariety of internationally-recognisedqualifications. Some subjects requiremaths and /or science at GCSE orequivalent level, and some subjectsmay require specific A-levelequivalent grades in certain subjects.

Postgraduate programmesThe table on page 23 gives anoverview of our postgraduateprogrammes. Generally, a goodhonours degree or equivalent isrequired and some subjects may belooking for relevant experience in aparticular field.

Professional programmes We offer professional programmesin teaching or social work, which aredesigned for training professionals towork in the UK. They have specificentry requirements which assessstudents for the practical, work-based element of the course. Somework experience in the UK is oftenrequired before interview. Entry requirements

We are looking forbright, motivatedstudents who are willingto play an active role inour interactive and smallgroup learning approach.

Entry requirements vary fromprogramme to programme. Some require an interview, andsome require a specific subjectqualification. Specific entryrequirements are listed on our website.

If you are not sure if yourqualifications meet ourrequirements, please get in touchand ask, we’re always happy toadvise you.

Undergraduate programmesWe accept a wide range ofinternationally recognisedqualifications. As a general guide,most of our undergraduateprogrammes accept one of the following:

• A recognised and relevant foundation course (minimum pass mark for a UK-based foundation programme is usually 55%).

• High School Diploma (to age 18) equivalent to 3 A Level passes at BCC/CCC.

• An International Baccalaureate (30 points).

• BTEC National Diploma (MMM-DMM).

Postgraduate programmesAs a general guide, for postgraduatestudy you’ll need to hold theequivalent of a good honoursdegree (2.1 or above) from arecognised university.

We also accept applications fromstudents who have completed a‘top- up’ degree at a UK university. If you hold a UK degree you don’tneed to provide an IELTS or othertest certificate.

We also accept HND levelqualifications if you have:• relevant and substantial

professional work experience and /or professional qualifications;

• completed a recognised pre-masters or graduate diploma in a relevant subject.

Pre-Sessional Language and StudySkills ProgrammeCompleting the Pre-SessionalEnglish and Study Skills Programmewill prepare you for the UK’s culturaland academic environment.

The Programme will improve youracademic English language and studyskills, such as your comprehension,critical reading, note taking,academic writing and other key skills necessary to help you to be successful on your degree programme.

International English Studies (IES)At Chichester you can start yourundergraduate degree programmewith an IELTS of 5.5 (or equivalent)by opting to study a joint degree(50% / 50%) with InternationalEnglish Studies. Over your first yearyour English will improve so you can,if you wish, switch to a singlehonours or major/minorcombination degree in your second year.

MPhil and PhD research preparationprogrammeOur specialist MPhil andPhD PreparationProgramme is designedto prepare you toundertake postgraduateresearch at a UKuniversity.

The Pre-PhD Programme can bestudied at the University ofChichester or by distance learningover the internet utilising videoconferencing and othercommunication technologies. If youchoose to complete the programmeat Chichester you’ll also be offeredadditional English language classes.

The Pre-PhD is tailored to suit yourindividual needs and your researchinterest. The primary focus is todevelop your research proposal.This approach will help you clearlydefine the key issues you wish to investigate and your specificapproach to the problem under investigation.

You’ll be assigned an individualsupervisor who will work with youon a one-to-one basis over sixtutorials. The appointed supervisorwill be an experienced researcherwith expertise directly relevant toyour field of investigation.

On completion of the programmeyou’ll have developed key researchskills. You will also have improvedyour English language ability and willhave developed the most importantaspect of applying for a PhDprogramme in the UK – a clear andwell thought out research proposal.

• If English is not your first or main language you’ll automatically be enrolled in the International Academic and Language Support (IALS) package of free weekly workshops, individual tutorials and online support. This will help you plan, carry out and check your coursework and develop your academic skills, such as essay writing and presentations. It will also develop the language skills required for your course. IALS support runs alongside your regular programme of study and is entirely free of charge.

Living with other students is a funand easy way to get to know otherpeople and an important part ofyour Chichester experience.

The University has a range ofcomfortable, secure and modernaccommodation to suit your needs.The majority of our rooms are on-campus with a small number a shortwalk away. We also have private andhome stay accommodation available.

The vast majority of rooms aresingle occupancy and some haveprivate bathrooms. We have a smallnumber of twin rooms available ifyou are looking for a cheaperoption. We offer self-cateredaccommodation (where you’ll sharea kitchen with three to seven otherstudents), or you can choose one ofour catered options which includesbreakfast and dinner from Mondayto Friday with brunch at weekends(you’ll also have access to a kitchenso you can prepare other meals).

Socialising and making friends

Socialising and makingfriends during yourstudies is an importantpart of a Britishuniversity education.

There’s a lot to enjoy about living inChichester and the people youmeet will become lifelong friends.

Cost of living and studying

Chichester is anaffordable place to live and study. Howmuch money you needwill depend on yourlifestyle.

It’s generally recommended that you have at least £800 per monthto cover all your living costsincluding rent, food, clothes, books, and socialising. The minimum amount you need isdefined by the UK Borders Agency. Please check their websitewww.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk.

How much you actually need willdepend on your lifestyle and theamount of socialising you expect todo. Make sure you join theStudents’ Union to qualify fordiscounts in shops, restaurants,entertainment venues and on thetrains and buses.

Working while studying

You can gain valuableexperience and learnmore about UK cultureby working part time oron a voluntary basiswhile you study atChichester.

If you’re from outside the EuropeanUnion you are normally allowed to work up to 20 hours per weekduring term time and 40 hours aweek during vacations, dependingon your visa status. However, youshouldn’t rely on being able to get a part- time job to finance your studies.

The UK Border agency has recentlymade changes to the rules onworking in the UK so please checktheir website for the latestinformation. At the time of going to press, students entering the UKon a Tier 4 visa were allowed to:• Take part-time work during

Confirming your place at ChichesterIf we offer you a place you’ll need to confirm your acceptance and paya deposit of £1,000 towards yourtuition fees (this applies to all non-EU students).

You must pay this deposit and meet any other academic andlanguage conditions before theUniversity can agree to sponsoryour student visa application.

Once you meet all the conditionsand have paid the deposit, we’ll issueyou a CAS (Confirmation ofAcceptance for Studies) to allowyou to apply for a visa.

ArrivalOn confirming your place at theUniversity you’ll be able to book an airport transfer through ourOnline Shop.

A taxi transfer from Heathrow willcost approximately £75 and takes90 minutes to reach the campus.From Gatwick it will cost about £60and takes 80 minutes.

Our international arrival days are onTuesday 17th September andWednesday 18th September 2013.

During the arrival days, our StudentAmbassadors will be at Heathrowairport to offer a Meet and Greetservice to help you find your taxi.Make sure you tell us your flightnumber before you depart so wecan meet you at Heathrow, or helpyou with your travel arrangements ifyou are arriving at another airport.

When you arrive at the Universityyour taxi will take you to theAccommodation Office. You cancollect your room key and a StudentAmbassador will show you to yourroom and make sure you knowwhat to do and where to go next.

OrientationWe provide a free orientation eventbefore the start of term to help yousettle in to your life at Chichester.It’s very important that you arrive in time to join your orientationprogramme as this is also when you need to officially register as a student of the University of Chichester.

Your orientation programme willgive you the chance to meet keystaff and fellow students, find outmore about the support servicesavailable and help you find your way around campus. There will also be a chance to meet currentstudents, ask questions and getadvice on what it is like to be astudent at Chichester.

There will also be practical and fun events, such as karaoke, gamesand dancing in the evening to helpyou settle in to your new life at the University.

The orientation programme willalso introduce you to the local areaso you know where to buy food and where to go for relaxation and entertainment.
