International Overdose
Awareness Day #OD10

Neither Nigel Brunsdon or Injecting Advice LTD take any responsibility for the information and advice contained within these Twitter messages.
It should be remembered that substance use/misuse has inherent risks and that use of a substance or medication beyond the therapeutic dose is classed as an ‘overdose’ and as such may be fatal.
In the case of prescribed medication dose should be decided between yourself and a qualified medical professional.

International Overdose awareness day 2010
A couple of weeks before OD Day I received an email from Meghan Ralston who works for the Drug Policy Alliance, a number of drug workers and activists who use Twitter where also copied in.
Meghan (whose Twitter ID is @overdosegirl) wanted to get us all co-ordinating OD day on Twitter. The easiest way to do this is by using a hashtag. Hashtags allow Twitter users to follow all messages relating to a subject even if they don’t ‘follow’ each other.
A number of suggestions got put forward but because ‘Tweets’ are limited it was decided we would use #OD10 to keep things simple.
HistoryInternational overdose awareness day was originally started by the Salvation Army to raise awareness of both the prevention and consequences of overdose.
Now, many services and organisations support the day and hold events that help inform both the public and people who choose to use drugs of the risks, treatment and extent of overdoses effects on society and individuals.
Twitter and the #OD10 tag
On the day hundreds of Twitter users around the world sent out messages and information relating to OD, many of them using the #OD10 tag, where we could we sent people messages asking them to use it. Remember though as you read this document that there where many, MANY more tweets to do with OD than you see here.
The day on Twitter
Although messages put onto Twitter do remain on the internet in some way, over time they get more difficult to find. They can also be quite confusing as people ‘Re-Tweet’ messages, change messages slightly and send them on etc. Because of this I thought it would be good to keep a record of the day, measuring the number of times a message is forwarded onto others.
This document

The bulk of Tweets tagged with #OD10 are here, the only ones I’ve removed are ones that made no sense, ones with totally inaccurate advice (only one or two fell into this category) or ones that all had links to the same resources. In this latter case I have put the first message to mention a resource and then classed future mentions as ‘Re-Tweets’.
The Tweets have been split into 3 sections:
OD10 Tweets: These are the plain tweets that just contain messages, information and advice. Although sometimes the advice contained can be quite simple I can tell you from reading them all that they will make great sets of quotes etc for training and OD promotions.
Resources and Articles: These are the Tweets that contain links to further informa-tion and resources, including OD T-shirts, training packs and workshop tools. All links are clickable.
Pictures: Although there are only three images posted from the day, I’ll think you’ll agree they are worth looking at.
Anatomy of a 'Tweet'
This is the Avatar for the person sending the Tweet, all avatars are the ones used at the time of writing this document
This is the twitter ID of the sender, you can find them by going to twitter.com/name
Number of times the message has been forwarded, this is at best a low estimation
Hashtags make Tweets searchable, people sometimes also use them as emphasis.
If people reference another twitter user they put an @ before the name. if this is at the start of a tweet then its a message to that person

I have to thank all the amazing twitterers who contributed to the days events, both the ones mentioned in this document but also all the ones who re-tweeted messages all over the internet and the ones who sent out messages on overdose without even knowing about the #OD10 tag.
But a special thank you goes out to Meghan Ralston (@overdosegirl) for inspiring so many of use to co-ordinate our efforts, Meghan has been working for years now to raise awareness of overdose both in the United States and Internationally with her Purple Ribbon campaign.
Thank you
