INWA President's Report There is no doubt that the Global Financial Crisis has, over the past three years, had an impact of many of our members. Unfortunately, when money is short, people seem to cut things such as exercise and caring for themselves. I say “unfortunately” because we know that in stressful times, exercise and fitness helps people to cope much better.

We have also found that many companies have been struggling and therefore are very careful about how they spend their marketing budgets. This has meant that they have cut back on sponsorship unless they are able to guarantee a quick return.

These factors have meant a reduction in INWA’s income and a fall off in the demand for Coach and Instructor courses. I believe that while the GFC will have an impact for some time, we will see a further growth in Nordic Walking, particularly in some of our new countries such as China, India, France and Israel.

The Board has taken the financial situation into consideration as it tailored its strategic objectives. I am delighted that a new, high-quality Instructor’s Manual has been completed which updates the INWA 10 Steps. A number of countries are arranging for the manual to be translated into the local language and this will see the further spread of quality teaching. At the Convention organised by ANWI, we will see the rollout of a new Weight Management programme. As so many developed and developing countries struggle with the “obesity epidemic” and its related health issues, this programme will provide a balanced, scientific approach to addressing this problem. It will also provide an opportunity for members to develop an income stream and lift the profile of Nordic Walking.

INWA World Nordic Walking Day continues to grow. We decided to create our own event, separate from TAFISA’s World Walking Day in October to enable countries to gain better exposure for Nordic Walking. Those countries that have embraced it have organised a range of events that have received coverage on television, in the newspapers, social media and the internet.

Some of our plans such as the revamping of the INWA website have been delayed because of cost. We have, however, established a strong presence on Facebook and through a number of blogs created by members. This communication medium will continue to grow, provide information to current Nordic Walkers but also connect with younger people who have yet to try it.

All of the Board, with the exception of me, have been new Board members. I would like to thank them for the many hours of work that they have put in to INWA and to the continued development of Nordic Walking. There is a platform that the next Board will be able to build on to secure the role of INWA as the only true international Nordic Walking body.

Board Meetings

The Board met monthly via Skype. It also met twice a year in person - a two-day meeting at the beginning of each year and at a meeting prior to each Convention. The two-day meetings were sessions to plan and review the Board’s strategy.

Key Objectives

The Board’s key objectives have been:

The introduction of a new Instructor’s Manual

The introduction of a Coach and Instructor Requalification programme

The introduction of additional programmes for Members, Coaches and Instructors

Renewal of the INWA Rules

Establishment of an INWA presence on Facebook and other social media

Revamp of the INWA website

Establishment of the INWA World Nordic Walking Day

Increase the number of INWA members

Establish a profit-sharing model for members and INWA

INWA Office

At the beginning of 2010, Katarzyna (Kat) Będźmirowska of Poland was appointed to run the INWA Office. Kat replaced Betty van Veelen, who had run the INWA Office previously.

Kat continued with the excellent systems put in place by Betty; however, at the end of 2010, Kat was unable to continue in her role. The Board decided to split the Office roles and have a separate Communications function: Daniela Coelho was appointed to the role and the Office functions were taken on by Paul Stevenson in an unpaid capacity.

INWA Education INWA Manual

INWA’s principle product is its education programme. The core of these programmes is the INWA 10 Steps©. At the 2009 Convention in Bavaria, the 10 Steps was reviewed and revised.

The Board, as part of its Education Strategy, decided that a high-quality Instructor’s Manual should be written to explain the revised 10 Steps and update the teaching techniques.

Tamara Kofol, as Chair of the Education Committee, formed a Committee that included the International Coaches, to contribute, advise, edit and test the material. One of the International Coaches, Tiina Arronski, arranged for her photographs to be available to demonstrate each step.

Karen Ingram arranged for the material to be edited and printed on high-quality paper. The manual was published in the UK and made available to the INWA members at the London Convention in September 2011.

There was a great deal of work and thought that went into the manual. The Board really appreciates the contribution of all who worked hard to make it the success that it is.

INWA would like to acknowledge and thank you all the Manual Authors; without your valuable contribution we could not have done this project!

Requalification Programmes

An INWA Coach or Instructor’s qualification is regarded as the benchmark for those teaching Nordic Walking. Yet many coaches and instructors have not renewed or updated their qualification or knowledge since it was first obtained.

Accordingly, a programme for Coaches and Instructors to requalify every two years has been introduced. This will also enable coaches and instructors to be updated with the Revised 10 Steps© and also benefit from new teaching strategies.

The Requalification Courses can be run in a member’s own country or as part of the annual INWA Convention. Those who successfully complete the half-day programme receive a certificate for a period of two years.

INWA Coach Courses

Over the past three years there has been a marked decrease in the number of members wishing to train new coaches. The most common reason given is that with the current global financial crisis, there has been a drop in the number of courses being run.

It is hoped that with new countries joining INWA, the demand for Coach Courses will increase.

INWA Rules A Change to the INWA Rules

The INWA Rules were developed when INWA had a strong attachment to Exel. A number of issues made it apparent that the Rules needed to be updated to better reflect the structure of INWA and the new means of communicating.

The INWA Rules 2009 were drafted, reviewed, put to the INWA Members and passed. They now comply with international law and best practice.

The INWA Rules were translated into Finnish and accepted by the Finnish Chamber of Commerce, where INWA is registered.

13

INWA Conventions

The INWA International Annual Convention is the Federation’s premier event for all worldwide members. The convention brings together Nordic Walkers from all over the world to share their experiences, to learn and to celebrate Nordic Walking. The Conference gives you a unique insight into the current state of Nordic Walking and what will affect its future development.
