In case you haven’t heard lately, You are Valuable!

You possess skills and knowledge that few are fortunate to have. How can this be said? Because you have a niche position in the graphic arts and metal packaging industry. You have either studied the basics in school or you have gained your knowledge working in the plants as a foundation for where you are today. Either way, exposure to the workings of our industry is the paramount teacher. There is no university that teaches all that you need to be successful at what you do; you’ve invested your time and are dedicated to keeping your knowledge contemporary as the marketplace demands. Our Association realizes and respects this as many of the Corporations do. Some did not and learned that the hard way and are pressed to replace employees with substantial knowledge who either retired or moved on. Well, we are here to help; help with providing meaningful conference presentations to keep “your saw sharpened” and to assist with inspiring and educating younger generations about our industry with hopes that they too will spend years learning this niche business as most of you have. Rest assured that the Conference will happen in 2020 and planning is underway by the some of the brightest we have. Also be cognizant of our efforts to work with Universities to increase faculty and student exposure on metal packaging; this issue reviews some of our first steps in the process to work with the schools. We hope that you appreciate the work being done.

As we look back on 2019 we realize that a few meaningful changes occurred in a short period of time. We officially changed our name to International Metal Decorating and Packaging Association and introduced a new online membership software system to allow members to have a personal member portal, to make payments for dues, to register for the Conference, and to update their personal information in their member portal to keep the communications flowing in proper order. The portal also contains the member directory and valuable conference presentations. While the majority of members embraced the new system, there are still those who like the previous way that we operated. Realizing that to be the case, we kept the former operating procedures to help with the administrative needs of membership. After all, servicing the membership to their liking is and has always been our goal. Going forward in 2020, we will continue to service as needed and desired by the membership. Having said that, you will be receiving communications from us via emails, email blasts directing you to the website, and by using printed matter. Again, all being done to satisfy the various needs of our member-ship. If you have not yet enjoyed the offerings of our new system, but want to, please reach out to us at [email protected] and we will be pleased to assist.

We are personally looking forward to a Healthy and Prosperous New Year and increased Value.

challenges getting the new software implemented. Some glitches encountered but overall most report good ex-periences but need to have capability to pay online as well as old way of sending checks and processing manu-ally. Some members and their Companies prefer the old way of sending checks especially if they have multiple members from one company. Mike gave details on how he still is processing transactions this way.

Committee Reports

Conference – Renee Schouten: Stats 288 attended, 270 golfers, 62 tabletops, & Hotel 449 hotel room nights achieved. Thursday Buffet Lunch was welcomed and should be used in 2020. Discussed alterna-tive for those not participating in the golf outing.

Attendance down slightly year over year for 2019 vs 2018. Analysis of why related to show saturation. Too many competing shows and companies are limiting budgets and not able to send employees to all show/conferences. Survey feedback is critical so we can continue to provide good value and a quality conference. Changed layout and floor plan for better experience.

Golf Outing – Kyle Hurla gave a financial report which showed that once again that $7,500 was given to scholarship recipients.

Scholarship – Gene Furey reported on scholarships. Numbers of applicants was down slightly but still going strong and many worthy recipients. 2019 is the 15th year for golf scholarships with 271 applicants and 112 scholarships being awarded during that time.

The goal is to get regular participation at the conference with 4-6 Universities in order to develop interest in our industry with younger generation. Ideas going forward are to have a graphic design competition on a can with an award (TBD) to the winner(s). Motion made by Bill Hoyle and Board unanimously approved initial budget of $6,000 to fund the design competition awards competition. Other ideas are to reach out to brand owners and ask for sponsorship for the completion to bolster the award fund. Also going to pursue developing of an internship program with our membership companies to benefit College Students interested in our industry. John Clark and Sarah Jacks to develop outline of the program and action items going forward for implementation. Emily King and Mike Grady from Southern Graphics Systems have also joined the committee and have been very helpful. Specification for Can contest. – Need to provide can specs and overall guideline for the competition.

Website – Renee Schouten gave an update on the new website and working with Zack Dickson from J.M.Travis to get the new website dialed in and populated as needed. Some challenges along the way and a few glitches and security issues popped up under certain scenarios when accessing site. Every-thing seems to be working well now but closely monitoring the site for any signs of problems going for-ward so they can be evaluated and addressed. Google analytics being looked at. Changed Website to new format is an issue. Large file sizes are issue. As a result, going forward we are going to eliminate the videos. Increase use of constant contact. Dear IMDPA,

I am honored and very grateful to have been selected to receive one of the IMDPA scholarships for this school year. The scholarship is very much appreciated and has directly contributed to help with my tuition.

I apologize for the delay in writing this thank you, while no excuse, I went from working two jobs over the sum-mer to a full plate at school and dropped the ball.

Thanks again for your support and generosity,

Education Committee Update

Co-Chairs : Sarah Jacks - INX International &

John Clark – Heraeus Noblelight America

Committee Members: Mike Grady , SGS International &

Emily King, SGS International

The newly formed Education Committee is making some good headway in reaching out to prominent packaging schools. Our goal is to build interest and engage students interested in careers in the packaging industry to choose “Metal Packaging” as a possible career path. We have organized the first ever IMDPA Student Packaging Design Competition that will showcase student designs focused around the 2-piece beverage category. This will provide students in the Graphics Arts and Packaging fields a glimpse of what the metal packaging industry entails. Entry into the competition will provide students with an opportunity to display their talent as well as creativity to industry leaders in the metal decorating field. The qualifying winners will compete for the “Bill Coors Award” (Learn more about Bill Coors and his role in shaping the metal decorating and packaging industry) as well as scholarships sponsored by the IMDPA. This will take place during the annual IMDPA conference held in Oak Brook, IL in May 2020. Industry leaders will serve as judges for the event, providing another opportunity for students to make contact with Metal Packaging Industry Professionals. The IMDPA will provide assistance to all students with resources for learning more about the metal decorating industry. Students should email the following with interest and inquiries: [email protected] Sincerely, IMDPA EDUCATION COMMITTEE

IMDPA VISITS THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - STOUT FOR AN INFORMATION “LUNCH & LEARN”

Education Committee Members John Clark (Marquette University), Mike Grady (Illinois State University) and Executive Board Member and Past President, Mike Yavorski (Rochester Institute of Technology) attended a luncheon hosted by the University of Wisconsin, Stout to make a presentation on Metal Decorating and Packaging to the School of Packaging students.

This is the first of many meetings to be held with Packaging Schools to enhance our industry’s presence in schools of higher learning.

As stated in last month’s newsletter, The Education Committee’s main goal is to close the large experience gap that currently exists in the Metal Packaging industry. We need to reach a new younger demographic and build a consistent pipeline of talent into our industry to continue its steady healthy growth.
