New Editions of Classic Works

International law scholarship features a number of

titles that are known simply by their author’s or editor’s

names. 2012 sees the publication of a number of highly

anticipated new editions of such works: the print edition

of the Max Planck (Encyclopedia of Public International Law),

Brownlie (Principles of Public International Law brought fully

up to date by James Crawford), Brierly (Law of Nations

revised by Andrew Clapham) and Simma (The Charter

of the United Nations, a Commentary, now in its 3rd edition).

Focus on Humanitarian Law

A number of new works look at how international

law conceptualizes and responds to violence. William

Schabas casts a critical eye on the tensions that lie

beneath the surface of international criminal justice.

Mark Drumbl also looks at the role of law in responding

to mass atrocity but focuses on the persistence of child

soldiering, suggesting new ways to tackle the problem.

Targeted Killings brings together leading thinkers from law,

politics, and philosophy to provide fresh insights into

one of the most controversial practices of the War on

Terror. Finally, there is a new edition of Eyal Benvenisti’s

seminal book on the law of occupation.
