MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOROF THE INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA

Assalamu‘alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

History informs us that without innovation of creative ideas, civilization starts tostagnate and decline until it dies of natural death. Therefore, to be in the forefront in allsphere of life, sustainable innovation of creativity is the primary precondition.

Sustainability presupposes creativity which is manifested through innovation. Innovating new ideas requireschallenging the conventional and established methodology to discover new directions, for repeating the samemethodology would result in the same outcome. Challenging the established ideas is the mental act ofcreativity. God exhorts mankind to use the intellect to carefully examine His signs: “Lo! In the creation of theheavens and the earth, and the difference of night and day, and the ships which run upon the sea with thatwhich is of use to men, and the water which Allah sendeth down from the sky, thereby reviving the earth afterits death, and dispersing all kinds of beasts therein, and (in) the ordinance of the winds, and the cloudsobedient between heaven and earth: are signs (of Allah's Sovereignty) for people who use their intellect (al-Baqarah: 164)”. Perhaps the answer to sustainability is within these signs which could be discovered throughcreativity.The 2nd International Conference on Creativity and Innovation for Sustainable Development (ICCI 2014) aimsto gather distinguished scholars, academicians, researchers and participants from various fields of expertise toshare new knowledge and models on creativity and innovation from Islamic perspective; to broaden anddeepen understanding of the relationship between creativity and development in culture and history; todeliberate on challenges of sustainability in education for creativity and innovation; to discuss and suggestideas on sustainable transformation and leadership through creativity and innovation; and to inspire andencourage creative minds to contribute to the innovation of creative ideas for sustainability.We are honored to welcome scholars, academicians, researchers and participants from all around the globe toparticipate in this conference. Accordingly, we hope you will find this conference an excellent avenue to share,

Assalamu‘alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhIt is with great honor to welcome all distinguished participants to the 2nd InternationalConference on Creativity and Innovation for Sustainable Development; and to theGarden of Knowledge and Virtue, the International Islamic University Malaysia.

The theme of this 2nd conference is leading through creativity, innovation and sustainability. Without doubt,the precondition to be at the forefront is through creativity, innovation and sustainability. It is my greatesthope that this intellectual gathering of prominent scholars, academicians, researchers and participants fromvarious background and fields of expertise would encourage and inspire all to share findings and collaborateon innovation of creativity for sustainability as well as the development of new knowledge, theories andpractices. The internal mental act of creativity should be manifested through measurable innovation forsustainability. It is therefore important to establish communication and cooperation and to share ideas andexperiences of how to bridge the gap between creative ideas and reification of those creative ideas. Educationat all levels, as we see it, is the starting point for training in producing creative ideas; and public and privateinstitutions including industries are the mechanism to follow-through with innovation. Collaboration betweenscholars and other stakeholders in various fields is an indication that creativity and innovation is starting onthe right foot. It is my hope that this conference would be the avenue for that collaboration; and also wouldenrich and stimulate scholars, intellectuals and other stakeholders intellectually and spiritually. Distinguished guests,We are thrilled to organize the 2nd International Conference on Creativity and Innovation for SustainableDevelopment here at the International Islamic University Malaysia and I welcome you to this event.It is the goal of the Department of General Studies, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and HumanSciences, to organize an international conference on Creativity and Innovation for Sustainable Development onceevery two years, with the target of enhancing teaching and learning of Creative Thinking and Problem Solvingand its relevance for sustainable development. The last conference was held in 2011 bearing the theme ofinfusing education with creativity and innovation. It attracted a large number of papers from local andinternational participants.Many critical aspects of creativity and innovation relative to sustainable development still require explorationand review, whether related to concepts, theories, values, models, parameters, criteria, processes, programs, orsocial impacts. This conference will take a step forward to further shape the Islamic model of creativity,innovation and sustainable development with a special focus granted to multi-disciplinary contexts of inquiry.The conference is also concerned with the role and contribution of creativity and innovations to improving thecondition of Muslim education, culture and society.

Barriers Hindering Tafakkur (thinking) from an Islamic Perspective

Abstract

Islam is a comprehensive and unique religion that captures all spheres of human endeavours. It does not onlyexplain the creation of man but it captures the various concepts and compositions of man such as soul, hearth,thinking etc. Little attention of recent studies on Tafakkur explicitly elaborates on the vitality of barriers andhindrances that curtail Tafakkur. Therefore, the primary objective of this paper is to examine some implicit andexplicit barriers that undoubtedly hinder Tafakkur from Islamic perspective. The methodology used in thispaper is document analysis and it is as well a library-based research. The findings of this paper identified somebarriers to Tafakkur such as: Jahl, Al-I’rāÌ, Taqlīd & Ta'ÎÎub, Hawā. Hence, it recommends that, the identifiedpredicaments to Tafakkur must be addressed through Islamic educational system, enlightenment andsensitization. It is hoped that if this is addressed, Tafakkur will be fruitful and positively utilized by Muslims inpromoting various spheres of human endeavours in the Muslim world.

The Antecedents of Innovative Working Behavior and Its Impact on Career Advancement AmongAcademicians in Malaysian Islamic Higher Learning Institutions

Abstract

Innovation has been identified as a crucial drive that determines the survival, growth and sustainability ofmany modern organizations. In today’s competitive environment, innovation can be critical in driving bothindividual and organizational successes. More importantly, individuals within the organizations are the keyplayer in the implementation of innovativeness at work. Hence, this study investigates the antecedents ofinnovative working behavior and its impact on career advancement. Specifically, this study will take a closelook on how communication efficacy, communication climate, mentoring, and networking influenceacademicians’ innovative working behavior. These communication factors are believed to provideopportunities for the innovation and implementation of novel ideas that will aid employees in achieving theircareer goals, and thus become a platform for their career advancement in the organizations. The study adopteda quantitative survey research design. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 132 lecturers fromthree major Islamic universities in Malaysia. The findings indicate that there are significant relationships foundbetween all four communication factors with innovative working behavior. Specifically, this study found thatinnovativeness is strongly correlated with communication efficacy, communication climate, networking, andmoderately correlated with mentoring. This study also found that innovativeness is strongly correlated withcareer advancement. Furthermore, regression analysis found that networking is the most influential factor topredict innovative working behavior, followed by efficacy and mentoring.Keywords: Individual Innovativeness, Communication Efficacy, Communication Climate, Mentoring,Networking, and Career Advancement.

AbstractWhile Ekvall and Arvonen used the three dimensions model of leadership behavior; focus on task, focus onpeople and a concern for change. They implanted creative leadership on the third dimension which includes:management competencies, leadership strategies and leading at the edge of chaos. The Islamic model builds onDeism concept that insist the oneness of Allah, and its influences on different levels of leadership. The first andforemost consequence to Deism concept is self-liberation from imitation, that resulted in inducing change. Itsinfluence on people and task dimensions might be shown in developing an accountability feeling that leads totransparency in a variety of behaviors. The dimension of change might reflect the insights provided by Deismconcept in its three levels. In the first level; management competencies, there are three constituents such aspreparing qualified leaders who are oratorical and able to change traditional concepts, and to have positiveexpectations in individuals, and gaining their agreement. On the other hand, major improvements are requiredin the second level which should make profound effects. The key for these effects is the quality of interpersonalrelationships. The most important level is leading in the edge of chaos because leadership should function in ahigh anxiety context by using integrative methods to accomplish tasks. Leaders ought to deploy the talentedand independent minded companions. As a result; such a creative leadership might lead to establish active andgenius communities.

Abstract

Some Muslim scholars have been arguing for many years now in favor of an ‘Universal’ and ‘Comprehensive‘World Order based on TawhIdic world view to establish a progressive development for the social order as awhole; not only in given areas. A selective approach denies the understanding of intellectual sustainability andthe application of this holistic concept. Instead, the concept of sustainability as a universal idea of systemicorganic interconnectedness is governed by the meaning of human consciousness that is defined and abstractedby the epistemology of Tawhid. In this sense the concept of sustainability underlies of principal identity of‘KHALIFATULLAH’ or ‘Vice-regency of Almighty’ in the Earth through man. The ‘Tawhidi epistemological’approach in its vast rigor has gone deep in very rigorous ways into the construction of the idea of participatoryworld-system including its ‘sub-fields of ‘economics, finance, science, and society in recent times. The works offew scholars are ‘legion in this area.’ There are ‘theory and applications in this distinctive birth of the Tawhidimethodological worldview.’ Current Islamic economics, banking, financial and other Islamic socialdevelopment discourses and system have been the outcome of this intellectual effort. Some scholars think thatthe use of the caption ‘Islam’ has been progressing and nurturing simply in the light of a system that is anextension of conventional thought, which has fathered the ‘Turbulent World’ of today. There is only an ‘Islamicdress, color, and flavor’ where individual’s self-interest and an inequitable ownership and distribution of theright to private property yet remain central. The interest of the public good is ignored. Public good meansdefining and attaining the ‘wellbeing of community, group people, and the whole global society. The Qur’an

says that ‘wealth must not circulate around the privileged few.’ The wellbeing concept of sustainability is adeep and vast one along with its intellection and application. The concept is wider than, but does comprehendthe functions of Islamic charity including Zakat, Wakf, Sadaka, Infaq, donation, gift, trust, foundation, and willcontributions of individuals and communities with the support of state and Institutions. In this context, Iwould like to propose a framework or outline for developing the ‘Islamic Welfare Economy’ and ‘IslamicWelfare System’; The practical and functional project: the ‘Islamic System of Sustainable Development’ in favorof ‘Universal Ummah’. This article will examine how this proposed system of sustainability formalized in thewellbeing criterion would be compatible with the ideal and conceptual framework of the ‘Universal WorldSystem’ of ‘Tawhidic Worldview.; One of the direct application of this worldview is ‘Islamisation ofKnowledge and Education - the IOKE’ project.

AbstractThis paper examines the importance of creativity and innovation for sustainable development. In particular, itsheds some lights on the need for the enhancement of skills and competencies of creativity and innovation inthe institutions of higher education in the Muslim world. Suffice to say, that sustainable development requirescreativity and innovation as a driving force that creates opportunities and solves problems. In any process ofdevelopment, thinking be it strategic, creative, innovative, critical, and emotional or any other form is thecementing elements that puts development in clear and sold ground. Hence, the question of development andcreativity and innovation become more relevant to the context of the Islamic World today. The Islamic world istoday more than any time in its modern history in need for sustainable development. This process ofdevelopment requires, among other things, development of specialised human capital that will respond to therequirements and demands of sustainable growth and progress of Muslim nations and people. One of theimportant elements in human capital development is to enhance the skills of creativity and innovation. Anyhuman capital that lacks creativity and innovation will not be able to address and effectively attend to thechallenges of development in our age of globalisation and sophisticated technology and intense social media.This paper addresses the question of enhancing innovation and creativity skills for the purpose of sustainable

development. It also looks at the role of institutions of higher education in teaching and imparting creativityand innovation skills. The universities and institutions of higher learning ought to play a dynamic role innurturing a human capital that is creative and innovative so that to effectively take up the challenges ofsustainable development. This paper concludes that the Islamic world is living in an age where innovation andcreativity becomes a matter of survival and not of luxury. There is no way to move up the ladder of civilisationdevelopment except with a human capital that is creative and innovative. As such, the role of universities andinstitutions of higher learning is no longer that of transferring knowledge, disseminating knowledge,consuming knowledge….but creating, innovating and transforming knowledge into practical solutions andinnovative products. Hence, there is a need also to innovate the curriculum, the training of teachers, themethods of teaching and learning, the ecosystem of learning and the overall dynamism of the innovation andcreativity process in the Muslim World. The paper recommends the establishment of a global Islamic networkof innovation and creativity as a platform to gather innovative and creative minds and people as well as toshare innovative products and solutions among the Muslim countries and people.

AbstractInfusion of creativity in teaching and learning is a key element in the development of any nation. It is aproblem-solving technique where students learn to think “out of the box”; they learn to ‘create’ (generate newideas, or ways of viewing things, designing, constructing, planning, producing, inventing) which is the highestlevel of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Many Muslim scholars are of the opinion that the regress of the Islamic world wasdue to intellectual decline; that is, taqlid (following others and holding uncritical faith in their opinions) andjumud al-Fikr (stagnation of the mind). Therefore, the revival of Islamic civilization requires liberation of theMuslim mind from all forms of mental slavery. This paper deals with infusion of creativity in teaching andlearning as a way forward for Muslims. Its objectives are twofold; firstly, to analyze the importance andsignificance of infusion of creativity in teaching and learning on the basis of Qur’an and Sunnah; and secondly,to highlight the objective of creativity in education from an Islamic perspective; that is, rejection of taqlid. Toachieve these objectives, the paper begins with explanation of the conceptual meanings of creativity and itsdevelopment in Islamic thought and heritage. Therefore, it is crucial that beforehand the challengesof an e-learning environment and the ways they can be overcome should be identified in order to achieveeffective implementation of such programs into the educational system. This qualitative paper presents theexperience and challenges of LMS implementation, and the way they are managed in a higher learninginstitution, through the valuable insights of a Subject Matter Expert (SME). It discloses as well, his opinion onthe future of the e-learning and the plans of this institution for the years to come.

Bloom taxonomy has been the basis of education structure in learning method and assessment. Underpinningthe behavioral objectives, Bloom Taxonomy informs the change of knowledge, attitude and skills which assistteachers to transform learning from low to high order thinking (HOT). Unfortunately, Bloom taxonomy hasencountered a shortcoming of the assumption of men as merely the body and mind without addressing thespiritual entity. For Muslims to adapt purely on Bloom taxonomy in planning and learning process reflects theignorance of the fitrah or primordial of men which is the most crucial aspect in Islam. Therefore this taxonomyhas to be revisited from the perspective of Muslim model of thinking. Further educational objectives incognitive domain should be explored. This research aims at highlighting the assumption of metaphysicalfoundation of Bloom Taxonomy which is contradicting with the Islamic metaphysic. It also attempts todiscover the differences between Bloom and taxonomy of thinking process which resulted from differentmetaphysical foundations and it’s implication to the Muslim educational setting. The methodology of thisresearch is based on the philosophical analysis and historical development of Bloom taxonomy and Malik Badriin order to identify the main differences between their taxonomies of the thinking process.

Abstract

Among all creations of God living in this planet, man is the most intelligent, innovative and creative. Imbuedwith these qualities, man was able to plan, create and recreate new things using the resources available in theenvironment. Man’s position as God’s best creation and as the recipient of the creative intelligence from hisCreator has further advanced him in mastering science and technology. As a result of his advancement inknowledge and science in one way or another has ushered man into creating great civilizations. While thediscussion goes on as to whether man’s creativity is an inborn or a learned behaviour, this paper intends toexplore and analyze some of the existing concepts on human creativity found in Western and Islamicpsychologies. Very particularly, the researchers would like to examine the concept of creativity put forward byFreudian Psychoanalysis, Behaviorists, Humanistic and Islamic psychologies. It is expected that the findings ofthis research can motivate mankind to be more dynamic and productive in bringing upon the much neededpositive change to present world conditions.

Abstract

Truly this is the age of sustainable development (SD) and surely creativity and innovation is playing a verycrucial role in this march. SD comprises both a way of understanding the world and a way to help save it.Firstly, as a method of understanding the world, the interactions of the economy, the environment, politics, andculture are studied and how they influence prosperity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.Secondly, as a method of helping to save the world, SD encourages a comprehensive and holistic approach tohuman well-being, one that includes economic progress, strong social bonds, and environmental sustainability.Many scholars, therefore, predicts that SD will become the organizing principle for our politics, economics, andeven ethics in the years ahead. To achieve the sustainable growth and development, institutions have greaterrole to play. Bank, as a financial institution, can really contribute in the process of the nation building throughseriously taking care of sustainable development principles and philosophy. In this direction, it is ray of hopethat many banks are now promoting ideas like responsible and ethical financing, green banking, and socialinclusion. In this case, we feel that Islamic banks should be serious and more diligent to be really Islamic. Fromsuch feeling, in this paper, our aim is to look critically at the role of Islamic Banks in promoting creativity andinnovation for sustainable development in the context of Bangladesh.

Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a buzzword all over the world. A company can distinguish itfrom others through CSR and we see that well-known companies actually not only differentiate their brandsand reputations but also their products and services taking care of the societies and environments where theyoperate. Some influential Islamic scholars also find significant similarities of Islamic teaching on business ethicsto the CSR agenda. So, conclusion can be drawn that CSR is immensely helpful to attain sustainable growthand development. However, CSR is not above criticism and now being criticized because of its absence of anygenerally accepted common framework and indulging in many activities in the name of CSR rather thanactivities that truly address society’s pressing needs such as poverty alleviation, income gap minimization,employment generation, basic need fulfillment etc. in this situation it is pertinent to ask whether CSR is enoughfor sustainable development or is it necessary to go beyond CSR. This paper argues that CSR is important butthere is a spectrum of ethical options beyond CSR. Besides CSR, this paper discusses the concept of corporatewaqf in Malaysia and Social Business (SB) developed by Nobel Laureate Mohammad Yunus as two possibleoptions. This paper will critically evaluate three models of social responsibilities i.e., CSR, Social business, andCorporate Waqf. AbstractSocial entrepreneurship can be adopted to address the unending industrial action in the public tertiaryinstitutions of Nigeria, academician and government official have been in dispute, particularly on matters thatrelates to staff welfare and decay of facilities in public institutions. This study has attempted to appear at socialentrepreneurship as a choice to traditional financial support of government through subvention; this clause hasalso determined whether social entrepreneurship is the best practice than funding through traditionalapproaches. The conceptual evolution of public institutions spawns the needs for social entrepreneurship toenhance efficiency and effectiveness in public tertiary institution. There is a gap between the public tertiaryinstitution and performance, it is the aim of this study to provide a solution that will close this gap the moreentrepreneurial public institution are, the better in performances. The study review secondary data relates toliteratures on entrepreneurship in a public sector organization given particular emphasis to entrepreneurialorientation (EO) considering its popular dimensions. In this study it was observed that the public tertiaryinstitution can mitigate the issue of underfunding when these organizations became autonomous, innovativeand risk taking. The article concludes by setting up some recommendations.

AbstractThe history of the Nubian community in Uganda is traced from the Ottoman rule over Egypt and Sudan in1820. This predominant Muslim community was brought to Uganda and later became part of the British Army.Due to colonial Christianization of the education system in Uganda, the Nubians were forced out of public life.They had to sustain their livelihood through the cottage craft industry. Hitherto, there has hardly been anystudy that has documented their creativity and taken stock of the sustainability of this vibrant industry. Thepresent study adopts qualitative approach to examine the extent of the sustainability of this cottage industry.Based on the results, the respondents are unanimous that the Nubians have managed to sustain their creativity,though in an informal structure; there is an urgent need to document their creativity and activities and theformation of strong community organizations in addition to capacity building can be instrumental insustaining the craft industry through aggressive marketing. The paper proposes the use of quantitative surveyand more robust methodology in future to enhance the quality and generalize findings of this importantsubject.

AbstractThis paper will attempt to shed some light on Islamic Nasyid groups in Malaysia, in particular RABBANI, RAIHAN ANDHIJJAZ. With the emergence of globalization and its entertainment aspect, and due to the huge influence of modernizationon the society especially among the youth, there was, indeed, a need for an alternative entertainment. And, as far asMuslims are concerned, the most effective way in this regard was, to a great extent, Islamic Nasyid. Entertainment itselfhas been an area of great discussion and dispute among Muslim scholars throughout the ages all over the world. InMalaysia, the issue of allowing or disallowing entertainment specifically songs and music is no longer a big issue. As amatter of fact, entertainment is part of the traditions and culture of the Muslims in this part of the world. Nevertheless, themajor concern here is that what kind of songs and music do Nasyid groups present? Could Islamic Nasyid be an alternativeto the conventional or non-Islamic songs? Is it possible for Nasyid performance to be viewed as an act of worship? To whatextent Nasyid groups are contributing in the Islamization of entertainment and enhancement of Islamic awareness inMalaysian society?? He comes creativity and the question of how these Nasyid groups were able to create an Islamicatmosphere. The focus of this research will be on: (1) The historical background of RABBANI, RAIHAN AND HIJJAZNasyid groups (2) The role these groups have been playing in creating Islamic awareness; (3) The Islamization of songs andmusic as promoted by these three groups; (4) The challenges these Nasyid groups are facing in terms of publication andaudience attendance etc.; and (5) The future of Islamic Nasyids in Malaysia. This research is expected to provide importantfindings that will enhance Islamic awareness among the society members. Besides, it is hoped that this research willhighlight the effectiveness of Islamic Nashyd in Malaysia specially in this borderless globalized village. Three methods willbe used in this paper namely; descriptive, analytical as well as comparative methods.

AbstractStudies on sciences of hadith primary focused on verification of the authenticity of hadith based on criteriadeveloped by scholars of hadith. Hadith is diligently studied to inform practice in ibadah, munakahat,muamalat, law, ethics and other Islamic way of life. However, the used of hadith to provide solutions forproblems faced by teachers, educators and practitioners during the process of developing good behavior iswanting. Review of literatures to find some solutions to context specific problems faced by practitionersdeveloped from analysis of hadith proved futile. If we believe without doubt that the answers to humanproblems can be found in the Qur’an and Sunnah then hadith should be examined to find the solutions sincehadith is a compilation of evidence-based best practices of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be uponhim) that may inform practice in psychology and education. However, the methodology used to study hadithshould be different from the conventional studies in sciences of hadith. Hadith should be examined fromdifferent angles creatively to provide solutions for sustainable development in human behavior. This paperattempts to describe the research methodology used in the study of hadith for application in educationalpsychology as employed by The Hadith of Psychology Research Team. The creative application and analysisof research method used in the field of human sciences to study hadith has resulted in the development of toolsto promote good behavior which led to the development of self-esteem enhancement model. Abstract

This paper aims to study the various approaches of systemizing knowledge in Islamic thought, with especialfocus on al-Raghib al-Asfahani. Throughout the history, mankind has made substantial efforts to understandthe world and to explain its events. The systemic inquiry has been the most useful approach to obtain a reliableknowledge and to unfold mysteries of nature which itself functions in systematic orders. Beside the logicalrules of correct thinking, systematization of knowledge is a methodological process which aims at achievingone or more of the following goals: generating new knowledge, adding value, or inspiring new approach forunderstanding the issue / phenomenon from various dimensions. To systemize knowledge, the moderninformation science classifies the entire body of knowledge into four hierarchal levels: data, information,knowledge, and wisdom. This process of systemizing knowledge, regardless of some critical views, helps tounderstand the external world. Systemization of knowledge, in fact, is based a systematic mind whichsubstantially qualified to extract the general principles and specific conclusions from individual observationson natural and human phenomena. Abstraction, generalization and systemization are the generalcharacteristics of the systematic mind. Beside the Divine guided prophets, there are some other individualswho obtained the systematic mind, either naturally or by experience and learning. Many good examples ofsuch individuals were identified throughout the history of Islamic thought. However, this paper especiallyaims to study the case of al-Raghib al-Asfahani, who has shown his systemic mind through his substantialworks, such as “al-Dhariyy`ah Ila Makarim al-Shari`ah” and “al-Mufradat Fi Gharib al-Qur`an”. Ibn Khaldun is known for his substantial and various contributions to human knowledge. He stronglydemonstrated his high thinking abilities in fields of history, economy, education and civilizational studies.Researchers provide different explanation to his achievements as their worldviews, intellectual background,personal objectives and ideological affiliations differ. Yet, some of the researchers did not try to explain IbnKhakdun’s creativity but to reduce its credibility by claiming its foreign origin. To show the flaws of this laterclaim, this research exposes Ibn Khaldun’s creativity and it highlights its originality through providingillustration showing its overall aspects and forms within its Islamic context. A good analogy is necessary to explain a difficult statement, what’s more if the statement relates to an abstractand unseen matter. The aspects of the unseen such as the continuous conflict between the reason (‘aql) and thepassion (nafs), the spiritual training (ijtihad) to discipline the desire are hardly understood if no correct analogyis given. It requires creativity and relate-ability of the scholar. AbstractThe need for improvement in undergraduate instruction in Department of Mechanical Engineering Politeknik MerlimauMelaka necessitated this investigation. The survey used a sample of 20 lecturers teaching theory modules drawn fromDepartment of Mechanical Engineering in Politeknik Merlimau Melaka. It sought to find out how lecturers perceive theimplementation of Online Based Mock Theory Test and Student Performance Analysis on the Theory Academic Courses.Among the features that the system contains are online questions uploading, online answering of question and onlinemarks and results processing. A customized Likert-type questionnaire was used for data collection to help answer theresearch questions to guide the study. The 30-item questionnaire used for the collection of data had a reliability value ofAlpha Cronbach which is 0.7368 analyzed by using Statistical Package For Social Science (SPSS) for Microsoft Windows. Itwas found that lecturers generally accept the Online Based Mock Theory Test and Student Performance Analysis. It isrecommended that Online Based Mock Theory Test and Student Performance Analysis for the Theory Academic Coursesduring classroom teaching should be made mandatory and conducted for all theory based courses in all PoliteknikMalaysia. Ultimately, by this teaching and learning tool ‘Design and development of the Online Mock Theory Test andPerformance Analysis hopes to improve the efficiency of the Course Work Assessments which are currently being donemanually by the lecturers at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In future, the researcher hopes that the findings ofthe data can be used for many good purposes.

Abstract

Creativity and innovation is very part of human nature (fitrah) which makes human beings different from andspecial among other beings. Islam gives very high importance to health as evidenced in the Quran and theSunnah, and Muslim civilization that flourished in Bagdad and Spain made original contributions to medicineincluding diagnosis, pharmacology, and medical technology. Muslim civilization is different from all worldcivilizations because it developed only what was beneficial and harmless, that is why there is no such recordthat may show any significant contribution of Muslims to inventing and discovering poisons and destructiveweaponry. Muslims were led by Islamic ethical spirit in pursuing and creating knowledge generally. Whereas,the contemporary developments in biomedical sciences have been flourishing in the circles where science isunderstood to be ethics-free, neutral, and value- free. This approach has given birth to many new biomedicalissues such as cosmetic surgery, in vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, sterilization, human cloning, sexreassignment surgery, gene mutation, neural coding, recombinant DNA technology, gene doping, humangenetic engineering, and human experimentation in medical research. Some of these issues may be beneficial ifguarded by appropriate ethics, yet some of these issues create space to question their very creation. Afterdiscussing the ethical repercussions of these issues, a general ethical framework is formulated on Islamicguidelines for creativity and innovation in biomedical sciences.

Creativity as a God-given talent has contributed significantly in the continual progress of humanity since antiquity. Man asa creative agent has innovated and invented many originality that serve various utilities needed for the sustainabledevelopment of his immediate society and that of his posterity. However, when such developments go beyond the level ofmere sustainability creativity comes handy in justifying moral flexibility and/or laxity to accommodate the dictates ofmodernity and its relevancy. Thus, thinking ‘outside the box’ or ‘without boundaries’ has contributed to the spread ofperversity in all its forms resulting in accommodating illusionary and ambiguity as synonyms of certainty. This papercritically espouses creativity and argues for its perpetuity but with guided responsibility.

Abstract

The growth of any country depends largely on the quality of education it can provide. Malaysia in the 1970thhad all the problems of a low-income, illiterate, and under-developed country. Since then it has witnessedphenomenal growth and development spurred primarily by educational transformations. One of theeducational institutions that contributed to this development is the International Islamic University Malaysia(IIUM). It flooded the Malaysian job market with successful graduates and provided several other countrieswith well-rounded individuals for several decades. The success of IIUM graduates is a phenomenon worthy ofbeing the subject of numerous studies. For start, this study focuses on the factors that have potentiallyinfluenced the academic achievement of IIUM IRKHS undergraduate students, particularly their relationshipwith one of the Holy monotheistic scriptures, the Qur’an. The reason for selecting the academic achievement isbecause several studies at the international level linked the academically successful students to be more stablein their employment, less dependent on public assistance, less likely to engage in criminal activity, more activeas citizens and charitable volunteers, have higher self-esteem, have lower levels of depression and anxiety, areless likely to exhibit socially deviant behavior, and are less likely to engage in substance abuse. Althoughseveral studies focused on the factors that influence academic achievement of students, none of the studies hasassessed the relationship with a Holy book as a possible factor. The significance of this study lies in the fact that

it is, perhaps, the first study that analyzes and evaluates the Qur’an as a possible factor that influences theacademic success of undergraduate university students. A questionnaire format is selected to gather primaryinformation. The population for this study is made up of 90 local and international undergraduate studentsfrom the Kulliyyah (Faculty) of IRKHS in the IIUM Gombak campus. The selected variables are measured byusing 5-point Likert Scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is being strongly disagreed and 5 being strongly agreed. Thecollected data is analyzed by using the Statistical Package for Social Science Program (SPSS). The types ofanalysis performed include: Descriptive (mean, standard deviation, Kurtosis, frequency table and variance),reliability (Cranach alpha), factor, validity, correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis. One of thepreliminary findings of this study is that having a relationship with the Qur’an has positively influenced theacademic achievement of students.

Abstract

The concept, ‘Islamic civilization’ is not a new phenomenon in human civilization because it had beenintroduced and practiced by all prophets of God/Allah. Today, the essence of Islamic civilization isquestionable. However, the effects of the Western civilization and its dangerous consequences posture apremeditated and strategic threat against beliefs and practices of Muslims. Muslim scholars and thinkers wereconcern to develop man’s culture and civilization in the various ages. Restructuring Islamic civilization wasrevived in the twentieth century by several scholars and thinkers, one of whom was Saiyyed Abul `AlaMawdudi. His approach clarifies some basic questions in restructuring the essence of Islamic civilization suchas: what is the origin, purpose, status of man’s life? On what thoughts and beliefs does a civilization build thehuman character? What are those incentives that inspire man to lead a particular kind of life that conformswith the ultimate aim of civilization? What kind of men does a particular civilization produce? Whatcharacteristics and qualities does a civilization inculcate and develop in men? Given the context, there is a needto examine the process and methods Islamic civilization in restructuring Islamic civilization in contemporarytime. This paper will also examine the meaning of Islamic civilization, its characteristics, analyze the causes andfactors of rise and fall of Muslim civilization, and finally presents methods of the development of Islamic civilization.This paper also briefly reviews the responses of Muslim scholars with a textual analysis and inductive approach to analyzethe prospects of formulating Islamic civilization in current context. It is hoped that the ideas raised will ultimatelycontribute to understanding and clarifying the approach in the process of Islamic civilization for both Muslims and non-Muslim communities in contemporary society.

Abstract

Islamic social teachings are mainly constituted in the Quranic teachings and Prophetic lifelong activities. Apartfrom those teachings, Quranic commentaries are considered as the main sources of Muslims towardunderstanding quranic methods for social changes. Writings and contributions of the three contemporaryinfluencial Quranic commentaries, Fi Zilalil Qur`an, Tafhimul Qur`an and The Message of the Qur`an are a greatcontribution that have broght social changes in contemporary society for establishing peace and justice for theentire humanity. Though a number of studies have been carried out on the Islamic social system, but thoughtson social changes according to these three commentaries in this contemporary globalized era have not beenadequately addressed by Muslim scholars. Therefore, this study aims to examine the roles of the three Quraniccommentaries i.e. “Fi Zilalil Qur`an” “Tafhimul Qur`an” and “The Message of the Qur`an” and their contributionstoward understanding the meaning, perception and necessity of social changes and to analyse the Quranicmethods applied by three influential personalities for social changes. Abstract

Creativity is a common aspiration for individuals and organisations, and an integral part of the contemporarysecular civilisation. The ability to generate novel ideas to solve practical problems in the shortest possibleperiod has been considered a hallmark of creativity. However, in solving our collective human problems, it iscommon to run into conflict of interests due to our human conflicting mental orientations or culturalaffiliations. Even when our human interests converge it might diverge from those of nonhuman animals. Thetendency to prioritise the mental mode of operation over, or at the expense of, the workings of other nature’sinhabitants has led humans to invent things largely seen to be creative even when it is ecologically destructive.Creativity that solves an immediate, short-term problem but generates greater, long term problems is anathemato sustainable development. If creativity is seen as part of, or associated with, novelty and problem solving,creative problem solving is then a phenomenon shared by other natural beings. Nature is full of complexproblems which are being solved within the network of nature’s constituents and in full compliant withnature’s design. Thus, if only for the sake of sustainability, we need to bring nature along in ourconceptualisation of creativity in attempt to counteract the effects of dark side of human creativity. Inpromoting holistic and collective sustainability, the Qur’an makes references to some animals whose actions ormodes of operation and problem solving are novel. Sad to say, the phenomenon of extremism is on the rise creating numerous problems. This is highlighted by themedia. Almost every day there is news about it, particularly in the Muslim world. The news generally portraysMuslims as extremists. Events related to religion or religious issues occurring in the Muslim world or outsideare interpreted with a difference, sometimes positively and most of the time negatively, which misleads peopleglobally. Thus, this paper will explore the Westerners’ understanding and interpretation of extremism. It willbegin with a study on fundamentalism among the Christians which the Westerners use with a specific goal byequating it with extremism. It will also analyse transfer of this terminology to the Muslim world wherecommitted Muslim activists and Islamists are branded as fundamentalists which automatically impliesextremism or terrorism. Then, it will critique the Westerners’ understanding of extremism from a Muslimperspective. Finally, it will provide recommendations to enable people to understand the true scenario so thatit can be avoided in their life.

Religious Co-Existence in BangladeshAn Empirical Study of Hindu Perception of Hindu - Muslim Relationship in Satkhira

Abstract: This article presents a case study of the perceptions of Hindus regarding Muslim-Hindu relationshipin Bangladesh with special reference to Satkhira district. One view is that as a Muslim majority, Bangladeshmaintains peaceful religious coexistence. Another view is quite contrary to it. Despite diversified arguments inthe print and electronic Medias, the true state of affair seems to be different with regard to peaceful religious co-existence. This research based on a survey among the Hindus of Satkhira district shows that 89.9% Hindus havecongenial relationship with Muslims. 89.4% Hindus attend socio-cultural programmes, i.e. weddingceremonies, Id festivals and others. 94.3% Hindus take care of the needy regardless of their religious affiliations.85.1% Hindus cooperate with Muslims in their social life. Obviously, 83.5% Hindus either have businessdealings with Muslim partners or prefer to have joint venture with them. 71.2% Hindus assert that Muslimsfacilitate to enjoy their educational, social, economic, and political rights. 79.4% Hindus have goodunderstanding of each other and strive for peaceful co-existence. 81% Hindus contend that they do not observereligious persecutions and 85.1% record that they live peacefully with their Muslim neighbors. However, 76.5%respondents are of the view that religious conflicts take place due to political differences.

The mainobjective of the study is to find out the relationship between E-banking and customer perception of banksservice quality a chi-square was used to run and determine the level of significant relationship betweendependent variable and independent variables, while regression analysis is conducted using SPSS to examinehow strong the relationship between the dependent variable and independent variables, the findings show apositive relationship between E-banking and customer perception of banks service quality, therefore in linewith the findings and conclusions of this study, it is recommended that there is the need to deploy moreresources to improve on the existing relationship on the activities between E-banking and customer perceptionof banks service quality in Nigeria.

AbstrakKeupayaan inovasi sering dikaitkan dengan kegemilangan tamadun sesuatu bangsa. Seiring dengan itu, Kerajaan Malaysiaturut memberi penekanan kepada peningkatan dalam keupayaan inovasi di institusi pendidikan. Bagi menjayakan halatujuinovasi institusi pendidikan, konteks pelaksanaan yang menyokong amat diperlukan. Konteks perlaksanaan merupakankemampuan institusi memperuntukan sumber yang diperlukan, mempunyai sistem dan proses yang sesuai bagimelaksanakan inovasi. Kajian ini dilaksanakan bagi meninjau persepsi pensyarah politeknik dan kolej komuniti mengenaipengaruh konteks perlaksanaan terhadap rantaian nilai inovasi di politeknik dan kolej komuniti Kementerian PendidikanMalaysia. Seramai 763 orang pensyarah politeknik dan kolej komuniti dipilih secara rawak berlapis dari 10 politeknik dan14 kolej komuniti. Soal selidik digunakan sebagai instrumen utama kajian yang ditadbir sendiri oleh responden. Secaraumumnya, kajian ini menunjukkan konteks perlaksanaan dan rantaian nilai inovasi berada pada tahap sederhana tinggi.Selain itu, data juga menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara konteks perlaksanaan dengan rantaian nilaiinovasi. Analisis regresi linear menunjukkan konteks perlaksanaan menyumbang secara signifikan kepada rantaian nilaiinovasi pensyarah politeknik dan kolej komuniti. Politeknik dan Kolej Komuniti disarankan untuk memperkasakan eko-sistem inovasi serta memperbaiki proses inovasi bagi meningkatkan keupayaan inovasi di institusi masing-masing.

Pemodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) was established on 17 March 1978 as one of the instruments of the New Economic Policy (NEP) to re-engineer the economic imbalance in the Malaysian society.
