Why an Inter University Diploma of English for Health Professionals?

� France, CME:

- Publish or perish…as everywhere else!

- Presentations on the international scene

� France, Medical students: after completing the course, the doctors are

encouraged to participate in teaching med students, particularly clinical

cases and national competitive exam items

� French-speaking countries: also need to publish and give presentations

Pedagogical Objectives

To develop the skills that enable doctors to work in English

� Take a case history

� Participate in a case discussion

� Communicate with colleagues (by snail-mail, e-mail, telephone)

� Give a presentation (Verbal & non-verbal communication skills)

� Answer questions at the end of presentation and during tea/coffee breaks

� Participate in a round table (agreeing, disagreeing politely, cross-cultural differences)

� Take notes during a conference

� Read an article in English as fast as in French (skimming, scanning)

� Write an abstract & a poster

� Write a research article

• Junior doctors & pharmacists

• Hospital doctors & lecturers• GPs or specialists in the community
