" 51% of the population in India is moving to the urban areas which will lead to congestion, and to aggressive growth in elevator usage. For now, the demand comes from the higher segment but over a period of time, as housing for all will make its way, the bottom of the pyramid will grow faster and that’s where elevator industry professionals will have to be more cautious.

– Niranjan Hiranandani, Co-founder and Managing Director, Hiranandani Group

The 7th edition of the International Elevator & Escalator Expo has proven to be a stepping stone for the industry to get in touch with its core customers. The success of the most recent edition was clear, with 171 exhibiting companies from 10 countries – India, China, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, the UK, and the USA, and a total of 9,400 visitors from 33 countries.

Key industry statistics

What’s in store for 2020? With the marquee names of the global elevator industry now becoming increasingly present in India, the country’s elevator sector is steadily adopting more and more international standards and technologies. Given the country’s rapidly growing economy and vast urban population, India is also of strategic importance to many international elevator manufacturers. Vertical growth is now increasingly visible in the expanding cities of India, resulting from rising land costs. At the same time, higher government spend on infrastructure projects such as metro rail and mono rail initiatives, as well as the redevelopment of railway stations and the modernisation of airports and green field airports, are also key drivers in the demand for elevators and escalators in the country.

• The elevator market is expected to reach 104,600 units by 2021• The passenger elevator market, which accounts for a major share, is forecasted to grow at

the rate of 8.60% between 2016 – 2021• The home lift segment is forecasted to witness a higher growth rate of 11.4% P.A. until 2021• Demand for elevators from the residential sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.6%

until 2021 and reach 55,400 units• The automobile lifts market is estimated to reach 3,770 units by 2021 at a CAGR of 10.3% (Source: MCG Report)
