PROGRAMMEInternational Congress on Vocational and Professional Education and TrainingSKILLS FOR EMPLOYABILITY AND CAREERS
6 – 8 June 2018Winterthur, Switzerland
Platform for decision-makers and experts from the fields of politics, business and science to strengthen vocational and professional education and training internationally
www.vpet-congress.ch
Ladies and gentlemen
In view of our knowledge-based society and the pace of technological advances, people are now increasingly expected to acquire new and often higher-level skills and qualifications throughout their working life. It is essential to gain new knowledge and skills, and to keep these up to date. Lifelong learning paves the way for personal and professional development, thereby allowing learners to play a full part in society and the economy.
Switzerland aims to provide a system of education, research and innovation that is adapted to today’s rapid pace of change and widespread use of new technologies. Agility is the guiding principle. Vocational and professional
education, and increasingly continuing education and training programmes, are key instruments in helping to prepare our workforce for highly digitalised markets now and in the future. But how should education systems be shaped to equip young people and adults with the right skills and yet remain flexible and able to react to change?
There is no doubt; truly viable solutions emerge from networks and discussions. That is why I am honoured to welcome you to the 3rd International Congress on Vocational and Professional Education and Training. Once again, deci-sion-makers and specialists will gather in Winterthur from all around the world.
Let’s pool our collective intelligence to foster employability and enhance career prospects in our societies. Together we can find ways of making the most of the opportunities created by digital transformation, and discuss how best to prepare the international workforce for the challenges of the 21st century.
I look forward to an open dialogue in Winterthur and to sharing good practices.

Welcome to Winterthur – the region with a pioneering spirit
Dear guests
This is the third time that we have had the pleasure of welcoming you to this two-day event offering a host of fascinating discussions between spe-cialists from education, politics and industry, and inspiring presentations, reports on experiences from the world of VPET, host company visits and insights into the life of apprentices in Switzerland.Since the start of the congress series in 2014 the world of VPET has undergone numerous changes. Education campaigns have been launched in various countries, inter-country projects have been envisaged or already put into action. And thanks to this event, a major national and international VPET network has evolved here in Winterthur to which you all belong.
The first vocational school for the manufacturing industry was established in Winterthur in 1870. This laid the founda-tions for Switzerland’s VPET system, which today enjoys such worldwide respect. And today Winterthur ranks among Switzerland’s leading educational locations thanks to its outstanding VPET institutions and a university of applied sciences. Winterthur has also made a name for itself as a cultural town with its museums displaying world class art-works. Perhaps you will even be able to find a moment to get to know the town during or after the congress. Our town guides have much to tell you about Winterthur’s pioneering spirit!
We are delighted that Winterthur is able to contribute to the positive development of vocational and professional educa-tion and training internationally, and hope that you have an enriching time at this congress.

UBS Greetings
Dear congress participant
At UBS we are strong supporters of vocational education, both in our Swiss home market and across the world. This is one of the reasons why we have been a partner of this international congress since the very beginning.
As a former apprentice myself, I know firsthand the benefits it brings. Apprenticeships teach technical skills and know-how as well as capabil-ities like communication, teamwork and a strong work ethic – skills that matter a lot in a professional career.
It is therefore of undisputable value for companies to support vocational education. UBS offers a wide range of training programs for young people in 50 countries. Last year, we had approx-imately 3,000 young people on our training programs, including apprentices, school leavers, high school students and university graduates. In a business that ultimately succeeds on the basis of the people it attracts and retains, this creates a strong talent pipeline.
Apprenticeships also make sense for the wider economy. It’s not a coincidence that two of the most successful econo-mies in Europe, Switzerland and Germany, have a well-developed apprenticeship tradition.
And last but not least, I believe the foundation my apprenticeship gave me has been an important factor in my personal career.
We at UBS are convinced that apprenticeship programs are a vital pillar for a sustainable successful economy – and the coming days will no doubt help to showcase their importance.
