International Conference on
CONFERENCE OVERVIEW Today’s Organisations accumulate
huge volumes of data from a variety of
sources on a daily basis. However,
turning increasing large amounts of
data into useful insights and finding
remains a challenge for most
organisations. Data Mining is a
powerful new technology with great
potential to help companies focus on
the most important information in the
data they have collected about the
behavior of their customers and
potential customers.
Conference Objective: This
conference is convened in the interest
of facilitating a knowledge share
platform for exchange of ideas,
insights, technology, skills transfer,
advancement of the subject matter and
creating a network of field experts.
This conference will be held annually
year after year to bring to light the
latest trends and to keep the
participants abreast with current
developments in the area of Data
Mining. At this conference all aspects
of Data Mining, including the
emerging Big Data and predictive
Analytics are to be discussed shedding
light on various developments such as
original investigating results, real-
world applications and systems
development experiences of every
aspect of the subject matter.

10:15 3rd Presentation- Knowledge Discovery in Education Data for National Educational Planning by Prof. Adenike Osofisa. Nigeria. Synopsis: In Nigeria like many other countries in Africa, students’ data, including examinations results, are kept in different forms depending on the agency/units responsible for such data. This paper will highlight how these data can be annexed together and explore the different researches that can be carried out on such data using Data warehousing Technology /Data Mining Technologies. The idea proposed will be validated using the result of previous researches in application of DW/DM in the educational sector.
10:45 Morning Break
11:00 4th Presentation-From Business
Intelligence to Analytics and Big Data by Dr. Barry Devlin, 9sight, South Africa Synopsis: The old world of business intelligence is being transformed into a new biz-tech ecosystem. Analytics is forcing the recombination of operational and informational systems in a consistent and coherent IT environment for all business activities. Big data—despite the hype—introduces two very different types of information that transform how business processes interact with the external world. Together, these directions are driving a new BI, so different to its prior form that I call it “Business unIntelligence”. This session covers:
12:30 Lunch Break
13:30 6th Presentation- Big Data A Business Necessity: The Cloud: Necessary to connect 7Bn People and over 50Bn
things because The Internet Will Not Scale Social Nets/Working: A result of computing power, apps, skills and
mobility migrating to the edge BYOD: The only way to achieve the workforce flexibility and adaptability
necessary for this Century Big Data: A manifestation of the Green Agenda and the need to do more
with less in a sustainable way
16:00 End of Day Two & Conference proceedings
16:00 -17:00 Exhibitions & Cocktails
First 100 participants to register will receive a free book of
Predictive Analytics written by Eric Siegel one of the keynote
speakers at the conference.
Synopsis of Some Keynote Presentations/ Abstracts: Predictive Analytics: Tapping the Potential of Big Data: The
excitement over "big data" has grown so dramatically as to assume the status
of a Movement. But what is the value, the function, the purpose? The most
actionable thing to be gained from data is prediction. This is achieved by
analytically learning from data how to render predictions for each individual.
Such predictions drive more effective the millions of operational decisions that
organizations make every day. In this keynote, Predictive Analytics World
founder and Predictive Analytics author Eric Siegel reveals how predictive
analytics works, and the ways in which it delivers value to organizations across
industry sectors. Persuasion by the Numbers: Optimize Marketing Influence by
Predicting It: Data driven marketing decisions are meant to maximize
impact - right? Well, the only way to optimize marketing influence is to predict
it. The analytical method to do this is called uplift modeling. This is a
completely different animal from what most models predict: customer behavior.
Instead, uplift models predict the influence on customer behavior gained by
choosing one marketing action over another. The good news is case studies
show ROI going where it has never gone before. The bad news? You need a
control set... But you should have been using one anyway! The crazy part is that
"marketing influence" can never be observed for any one customer, since it
literally involves the inner workings of the customer's central nervous system. If
influence can't be observed
The Functional Basics of Predictive Analysis: Today’s managers must
always look at the past, present, and future. They need reports on past
performance to improve operational efficiency. They need to make informed
forecasts about the future to optimise resource allocation and consumption.
And, they need data about current conditions to react to problems and
changing conditions before they have a negative impact on the business.
Big Data & Cyber Security: Businesses and government infrastructure are
constantly exposed to cyber attacks in the modern age of Internet connectivity.
Due to the growing complexity of information systems and attack strategies,
traditional mechanisms for protecting against cyber attacks are no longer
sufficient. Devices that actively monitor and detect network intrusions have
become a critical security element in large business networks. To function
effectively, these devices require data on local cyber threats and mechanisms
for protecting against them. CSIR MDS obtains this information using data
mining techniques on real time data it receives from network sensors, which
are in the process of being deployed throughout South African wide area
networks. Not only does this information provide an accurate picture of the
local threat landscape, but also the ability to respond more rapidly to new
threats. This ability is key to ensuring the future safety of business networks in
South Africa, and provides CSIR MDS a competitive advantage against
traditional security systems in the local arena.
Big Data A Business Necessity-Impacting the limitations of raw material
and energy supply demands far more than improving the efficiency of our
existing business processes and models. Continuing to do what we have always
done, using fewer resources, and better management systems, merely postpones
the crunch point of the green agenda. We have to think new and different!
Today; data gathering, mining and analysis is about the monitoring of people, companies, institutions, logistics, raw material and product production focused on 6 sigma delivery and customer satisfaction. Repurposing, reusing a recycling helps meet our green objectives, but falls far short of what is required. Our old IT models, company structures and working practices turn out to be ineffective, and often, dangerous. Sustainable futures (in the broadest sense) can only be achieved with new materials and manufacturing methods that will see the shipping of designs instead of products, cloud working instead of corporate concentrations of people, the gross outsourcing of technologies and facilities, along with new working practices and company structures that are far more
open, adaptable, and accepting of change. The Cloud, Mobile Working, Social, Nets, BYOD and Big Data are therefore necessities that we have to embrace in order to stay competitive in a world that is managed by the $$$ but subject to the increasing limitations of finite resources, environmental and social impact. On another level, security and validity have to be assured in a world apparently more open to attack and infiltration. Big Data turns out to be a key element in the security war against the growing 'Needle in a Needle Stack' problem. Firewalls have already proved ineffective, but The Cloud offers us a route to near infinite security.
