As the world body for our specialty it is important too, for us to continue to strive for the international fellowship that brings about much of the innovation in service to our patients that Brånemark exemplified, and of course this is the continuing focus of our biennial conferences. Program chairs Ken Malament (USA), ably assisted by and Seong-Joo Heo (Korea) have put together a conference with a glittering array of exciting speakers and topics. We are hoping for another record attendance. One of the challenges of increased attendance is the increased numbers of posters. These provide an opportunity for especially early career prosthodontists to showcase their research, as well as for our more established researchers. We have increased the number of prizes for poster, which is a huge challenge for the judges, so we will be strict in that if you are not in attendance at your poster during the official poster session, you may not be judged. Several conferences ago, 2009 in Cape Town, the Board agreed that there should a regular session devoted to maxillo-facial prosthodontics, and last year, in response to a heartfelt plea from Michael MacEntee at the 2011 conference, the Board agreed that there should also be a regular session devoted to dental geriatrics. So those, together with the more familiar sessions covering just about all aspects of Prosthodontics from high-tech to appropriatech will, we hope, make the Seoul conference a memorable one. We will dedicate

the sessions on implant dentistry to the memory of P-I Brånemark. Whilst it could be said that the main focus of our activities has been the conferences, the ICP Boards that we have served over many years and now serve as co-Presidents, have grappled with ways to add value to our mission as well as our members, and we are pleased here to report on some exciting initiatives which will be a focus of the organization for years to come. Our organization is not a wealthy one

(although that term is always relative) but is certainly in a sound financial position, and as a non-profit organization it behooves us to use any assets for the benefit of the membership. Our most prominent activity on that front has been the support of the Young Prosthodontic Educators and its organizing committee led by George Zarb, and hosted at Winfried Walther’s superb Karlsruhe postgraduate institute.

Whilst the ICP assisted with financing these workshops in the early years, now our assistance is directed to the participants, in particular to assist participants from developing countries with travel and accommodation stipends. Many members have generously donated amounts over and above their subscriptions when renewing them, which is really appreciated, and this has been used for these purposes. We also assist former YPE participants who present at our biennial conferences. This, however, is really the extent of what we have done, but now that is going to change significantly (without affecting our continuing support of the YPE of course). Your Board has established, under the guidance of the Chairs of our Education and Research Committee, co-Vice-Presidents Brian Fitzpatrick and Nico Creugers, an Education and Research Foundation with an initial grant of $50,000. The

intention is that this will be a small grants research fund for prosthodontic students to support new and existing research with top-up grant money, as well as to offer mentoring and intellectual support from within the considerable membership resource that comprises the ICP. Now this is not a huge amount, and so the intention is to seek additional donations from you, our members, as well as from Industry. Which brings us to another initiative, which is to establish joint ICP-Industry research fellowships. Brian Fitzpatrick and Sree Koka have been

working with the Ivoclar Vivadent Corporation on a proposal to establish a one year restorative materials research fellowship program as a first example of what can be done. This would combine financial support with mentorship of the student by a world-class researcher and have the potential for a life-long impact on the student, the mentor, the discipline of prosthodontics and our patients. Negotiations are at an advanced stage and it is hoped to have the agreement and application protocols completed and ready for launch at the Seoul meeting, as well as the guidelines for the research grants, so that we will be in a position to receive our first applications immediately after the Seoul meeting. Other committees have been working steadily in the background on your behalf, as have our administrators, RES-Inc. who manage to keep us all on our toes. The sponsorship committee, with the support and expertise of Janice Badger from RES, has done a sterling job, as without sponsorship our conferences would be very different to say the least. You will have seen an increased presence and exposure for our sponsors on the website, which is a value-added approach that they appreciate. The website, by the way, is also to undergo an upgrade, as it is still using the technology in place at the time of its first appearance, about 15 years ago! So please keep in touch via the website, our Facebook page, or feel free to contact us at any time. We look forward to seeing you in Seoul in September!

Presidents’ Letter ~ Join us in 2015!

We are pleased to report on several exciting developments for our organization, and of

course as this is a Conference Year, on the plans for our biennial conference in Seoul, South Korea. But first, December of last year was marred by the sad news of the passing of Per-Ingvar Brånemark, and we extend our condolences to Barbro and his family. All members will have

had access to the Editorial in the latest edition of the International Journal of Prosthodontics and we would endorse the sentiments expressed there, on behalf of the organization. As we look rather to the future, our hope is that the benefits of osseointegration will be extended to cover eventually the majority of our patients and not just a minority as at present. We know that this was a shared wish of P-I’s, and the motive for his wanting to establish Brånemark centers of excellence in developing countries.

17th ICP Biennial Meeting Santiago, Chile 2017 Dates to be determined in early Sept…

Santiago, formally Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile. Chile's

steady economic growth has transformed Santiago into Latin America's most modern metropolitan area, with extensive suburban development, dozens of shopping centers, and impressive high-rise architecture. It has a modern transportation infrastructure.

On a clear day, Santiago basks in one of the most spectacular settings of any city in the world. A glance through the downtown blocks reveals a mighty circle of mountains - the snowcapped Andean peaks to the east, and a smaller coastal range to the west. There's a large range of activities within easy reach of the urban sprawl. Trekking, climbing, horseback riding, skiing, kayaking and wine tours are just a few of the exhilarating possibilities at Santiago's doorstep.
