I. British Association of Barbershoppers (BABS)Based upon more than a year of correspondence and

planning with the Barbershop Harmony Clubs in the UnitedKingdom, the board approved a revised "Proposed Agreementfor Affiliation With the British Association of Barbershop­pers,"

II. Recording Advertising PolicyThe board removed from the Statements of Policy the

restriction that only recordings made by Society units (thatmeet officially established criteria) may be accepted foradvertising in the HARMONIZER.

III. Commercial SponsorshipTo provide clarification in the matter of commercial

sponsorship of quartets, choruses or chapters, the boardapproved the following amendment to the Society Statementsof Policy as recommended by the Laws and RegulationsCommittee:

"Any unit of the Society (quartet or chorus) desiring tobe sponsored by a commercial or industrial organization, forone or more public appearances, and desiring to lise the name,initials or emblem of the Society in conjunction therewith,must have such sponsorship approved, in advance, by the Int'I

Executive Committee. The essential elements of 'sponsorship'are: a.1 Public acknowledgement of such sponsors during thepublic appearance, on the printed program, or in advertising,and b.1 The agreement by the unit to receive anything ofsubstantial value from the sponsors for such appearance.Approval is not required for public appearances for charitableorganizations, churches, service clubs, civic organizations orgovernmental bodies, nor for appearances for entertainment ofcommercial or industrial organizations, for which a fee isreceived, and for which there is no claim of sponsorship."

IV. Fees for Appearances on Licensing or CharteringShows.

Upon executive committee recommendation, a policyregarding fees for licensing and chartering shows was adoptedby the board as follows:

"All Society units, in keeping with the spirit of barber­shopping, will not charge a performance fee for appearanceson licensing and chartering shows. If it is necessary, due todistance or amount of expense, reimbursement by the hostchapter for out·of·pocket expense would be in order."E. COMMITTEE REPORTS

Harmony Accuracy and Balance & Blend Categories, wasadopted by the board. (See story on page 8.) NEW CATEGORY REPLACES HARMONY ACCURACY AND BALANCE AND BLEND

Board Approves SOUND Category

Just prior to the 1975 international convention, a group of50 previously qualified men met in Indianapolis to undergofour days of intensive training in the new Sound category.Those men who successfully completed the school were cer­tified to judge the new category. which became official follow·ing international board action taken during the recentIndianapolis convention. The Sound category will replace boththe Balance and Blend and Harmony Accuracy categories,marking the end of a complete revamping of the judgingsystem begun several years ago.

It was recognized then that there was a great deal of over­lap in the former Voice Expression and Arrangement categor­ies. We think everyone will agree that the change to the newInterpretation and Arrangement categories was more thanjustified. The music being performed by our choruses andquartets has a quality never approached before. Performersare focusing more precisely on the meaning of a song'slyrics and creating a greater empathy between themselves andtheir listening audience. Recent changes in the Stage Presencecategory are making their mark, and a noticeable improvementin visual appeal is evident. Our audiences have had theirappetites whetted by these improvements. Now it's time tofocus our attention on the elements of sound production, soour performers may sing music more meaningfully, and soundbetter while doing it.

For the past two years, the Sound category Board ofReview have been sifting and weeding alternate approachesto the category. They have carefully gone over its description,candidate training devices, methods of judging and clinicalevaluation, etc. Assisting me during this period have beenHank Vomacka, Billy Ball, Don Flom, Emmett Bossing, JimRichards and, early in the formative stages, Mac Huff.Director of Musical Services Bob Johnson has been a full-timeadvisor. After many discussions and exchanges of ideas on theSUbject, this talented group has come up with what we knowyou'll find to be a straight·forward, easy-to·understand, yetcomprehensive description of what "sound" is all about.

By now most of you have probably heard the words"expanded sound." By expanded sound we simply mean thatthe sound emanating from a chorus or quartet appears to begreater than the sum of the sounds produced by the indi­vidual voices. To create this expanded sound, the perfor­mer must not only be aware of proper pitch, word andvolume relationships, but have the skill and disciplinedvocal techniques required to produce such relationshipswith precision and quality. Quartets and choruses will bejudged on their ability to achieve expanded sound, and judgeswill be providing advice at clinics and schools on how toimprove sound skills.

The basic sound factors to be judged are listed belowin their order of importance. They all contribute to theassignment of a single sound rating for each performance.

1. Accuracy of intonation;2. Uniformity of word sounds in good quality;3. Proper volume relationships; and4. Precision in executing sound.By accuracy of intonation we mean the ability of the

singeds) to sing "in tune" to the anticipated melodlc line asthat melody is sung in tune to the established tonal center(key feeling). At times the singers will sound out of tunebecause of improper frequency adjustments (pitch) whichdetract from the creating of combination tones and over­tones. At other times they will sound out of tune becauseof a lack of uniformity of word sounds, even though theremay be no pitch or volume relationship inaccuracies. TheSound judge will downgrade his sound rating whenever hehears an "out-of-tune" sound regardless of the cause.

By uniformity of word sounds in good quality we meanthe ability of the singers to "match" vowel and singableconsonant sounds and, in doing so, reinforce the uniquepatterns of resonant frequencies associated with each of thevarious word sounds we use in singing. Good breath controland tone support are essential to the production and per­formance of these sounds. It is in this area that judges willbe evaluating quality of sound.

As far as proper volume relationships are concerned,you'll /lote that this ingredient of expanded sound has pre­viously been called "balance." Here the sound judge willevaluate the degree to which the performers are adhering tothe following characteristic rules of proper voillme relation­ships Inherent in the barbershop style: a.) The melody ispredominant so the listener can follow the tune; b.) In theharmony parts, the root and fifth are sung somewhat strongerin volume relative to the dynamic level of the melodic line;and c.) The melody line is not so loud that it lessens the ex­panded sound. Thirds and sevenths, even in the melody,must occasionally be relatively softer to supress the .Iessdesirable dissonant harmonics to maximize the expandedsound.

The judge will also be concerned with the degree to whichindividual members of a chorus section contribute to theirsection's unit sound.

Finally, expanded sound is also affected by attack-and·release errors and faulty precision of synchronization ofword sounds. The sound judge will note these precisionerrors which adversely affect the level of total sound andadjust his overall sound rating accordingly.

Scoring for the sound category will be a single score,from zero to 100, which will be assigned for the perform­ance of each song, based on the degree to which the fourfactors previously described have contributed to the attain­ment of expanded sound. The judge will objectively applyhis own listening experience in arriving at a score which

rates the attainment of a fully expanded sound relative to hisimage of a perfect performance.

For the past year we have been practice-judging Sound,and comparing our sound ratings with Harmony Accuracyand Balance and Blend scores. We wanted to determine ifcontestants ranking highest in the Sound category had com­parable rankings in Harmony Accuracy and Balance and Blend.The results have been favorable.

Because of our correlations we plan to weight Soundequally with Interpretation and Stage Presence; that is, forevery two-song contest session, each of these three categoriesis worth from zero to 200 points per judge. Both the Inter­pretation and Sound categories are worth from zero to 100points per song. The Stage Presence category will be worthfrom zero to 200 points per performance. Each Arrangementjudge will still award from plus 20 to minus 19 points foreach of the two songs.

We are looking forward to this Fall when we will bejudging Sound for the first time. We feel sure that contestantswill be enthusiastic about the new category. This is justanother case where extremely talented men are doing allthey can to improve the contest and judging system, and tohelp our performing groups "sound" better.
