UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKIThe University of Helsinki is the largest university in Finland, with the widest range of disciplines. Es-tablished in Turku in 1640, it was transferred to Helsinki in 1828. The University of Helsinki joined theLeague of European Research Universities with the University of Cambridge and the University of Ox-

    ford in 2002.

The academic year of the University consists of an aut umn term (August 1 - December 31) and aspring term (January 1 - July 31). Courses start normally in late August or early September in the au-tumn and in early January in the spring. Each term is further divided into tw o seven-w eek periods with one-week break between the periods. The summer vacation period covers the months of June,July and August. In late August, the Student Services of the University arranges an orientation courseand tutoring for new international students. The course will be held in English. The Faculties of theUniversity of Helsinki offer orientation courses in Finnish and Swedish.

The languages of instruction at the University of Helsinki are Finnish and Sw edish . Finnish is themain language of instruction, whereas Swedish is used in some degree programmes, diploma coursesand major subjects. In addition to postgraduate (i.e. doctoral or PhD) programmes, a steadily grow-ing number of International Masters Degree Programmes : for more information, see(htt p://www.helsinki.f i/internationalprogrammes/index.html) as well as in many Faculties Masterslevel studies are offered fully in English on a regular basis. DEGREESThe University of Helsinki offers a full scale of degrees f rom t he Bachelor s degree to t he Docto r-at e (PhD) in all majors and degree programmes. The first, lower academic degree is kandidaatti (theBachelors degree). The second, higher degree is maisteri (the Masters degree). Students must firstcomplete the lower academic degree, i.e. the Bachelors degree, and then the higher academic de-gree, i.e. the Masters or, in medical studies, the Licentiate degree. The two exceptional degree pro-grammes are Kindergarten Teacher Education and Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from these stu-dents graduate with a Bachelors degree.

    Undergraduate Studies

Despite the tw o-cycle degree syst em , all students admitted as undergraduates to the University ofHelsinki have the right to pursue studies leading to the Masters degree. Exceptions to this rule are theprogramme leading to the Qualification of Kindergarten Teacher and the Bachelor of Science inPharmacy programme. Although a full-scale degree as such, the University of Helsinki considers theBachelors degree to be a provisional degree towards the Masters degree. Consequently, there willbe no selection process in the transition from Bachelors level studies to Masters level studies. TheBachelors degree must be completed before registering for Masters level studies.

All undergraduate and graduate students are registered as full-t ime student s . Part-time status doesnot exist at the University of Helsinki. The Bachelors degree consists of studies in the major subject(with a minimum of 60 credits) and basic studies in at least one minor subject (25 credits). The Bache-lors degree includes a thesis, worth six credits. After having completed their Bachelors degree at theUniversity of Helsinki, students may change their major subject for the Masters degree. If they obtainpermission to do this, the Department of the new major subject may require the student to completea maximum of 60 credits of complementary studies.
