  • www.pb.unimelb.edu.au >This technical specification document is to be used for theimplementation of a flexible and unified internal signagesystem for The University of Melbourne.

As well as setting standards, the guide allows for designflexibility and provides opportunities for faculties to expresstheir own identity within these basic principles.

Above all it provides a coherent set of guidelines that willproject the visual identity of the University into the communityand welcome the community onto our campuses.

This publication is not intended to provide solutions to allyour signage needs. A rational approach is required whendetermining what signage is really needed and how best toorganise the information. Design and layout experience willinevitably ensure that both functional and aestheticconsiderations are taken into account. Information needs tobe presented clearly and without confusion. The efficiencywith which the message is conveyed and acted upon willdepend upon simplicity.

Points to considerWhen introducing new signage or replacing old andobsolete signs several points should be considered:

observe clear lines of vision for both standing and seatedpersons.

consider at what point decisions are made in relation todirection and changes of direction, and position signsaccordingly.

remove signs with obsolete messages and whereunnecessary duplication occurs. Consolidate thepresentation of information into as few areas as possible.

observe pedestrian patterns and make appropriatedecisions. Avoid the overuse of signage that results in confusing visual clutter.

ensure there is sufficient contrast between lettering and sign backgrounds. Poor lighting may require signbackgrounds to be modified. Be aware that glare andreflection from sunlight and artificial light can impairlegibility.

think about the wording you intend to use. Avoid ambiguityand be concise as well as friendly. Use internationallyrecognised graphic symbols that clearly convey theinformation intended as an option to text only messages.

look to implement consistent sign heights and sizeswherever possible.

  • 2 Using these Guidelines

This publication is not intended to provide solutions to all your signageneeds. A rational approach is required when determining what signageis really needed and how best to organise the information. Design and layout experience will inevitably ensure that both functionaland aesthetic considerations are taken into account. Information needsto be presented clearly and without confusion. The efficiency with whichthe message is conveyed and acted upon will depend upon simplicity.

    >Graphic symbolsSymbols can accompany or be used as substitutes for words and phrases to overcome the difficulty associatedwith language. They can identify an area, direct traffic andhighlight danger. Style and layout are standardised, in linewith Australian and International standards and arecategorised under the following types:

Identification - identifying a facility or service e.g.telephone, toilets etc. Signs under this classification arelocated at the beginning or the end of a route and mayconsist of text, symbol, or a combination of both. Theseinclude room and facilities identification and graphicsymbols.

Direction - for directing traffic flow and including arrows. They may be either wall mounted as strip slats orsuspended.

Stop/Prohibition - indicates that an action or activity isprohibited e.g. no smoking.

Hazard/Caution- indicating risk, danger or presence of a toxic hazard.

Mandatory - indicating that there is an obligation towear personal protective equipment.

Emergency/Safety - implying safe conditions e.g. first aid, fire and emergency exits.

Planning, specifying and orderingWhen planning internal signage prepare a rough or even ascaled drawing that will aid consultation and specification.Prepare a signage inventory and a schedule to assist thedesigner in assessing the actual signage requirements.

Where a whole building or faculty requires new or updatedsignage, preparing an inventory is recommended to keeptrack of all elements as the production process gets underway.

Categorise the signage according to function (identification, direction, information) marking location points and positionson a floor plan whilst on site. A copy of the current floor planis available for the Drawing Office, Property and Buildings. The inventory records sign detail, and in the case of directories, should be accompanied by typed and approved copy.

Signs may be ordered through Property and BuildingsRequests for assistance in sign planning and the ordering of signs can be made raising a Work Request through theRemote Request System or ringing the Asset managementCall Centre on ext 46000.

The University sign systemThe University uses a system of 80, 60, 40 and 20mm deepslats. The top slat is referred to as a header slat and displaysprimary information. This header slat may be rendered in theUniversity Blue and display building or faculty information aswell as the University logo. Subsequent combinations ofslats and slats are used to present secondary or directoryinformation.

The relationship, between the depth of the slat and the sizeof lettering is illustrated here. With one line of lettering theletter height is 11mm. With two lines it is one quarter thewidth of the slat. Accurate layouts can be produced forcosting and approval prior to sign production.

Margin spacingAll words and messages are aligned to a left margin leaving aspace equal to the space above the capital height and belowthe base line of the letter.

When lettering, used in a main header slat, is larger in sizethan the lettering on the subsequent slats, alignment oflettering is made with lettering in the header slat.

Letter, word and line spacing guidelinesAssembling letters and words requires attention to spacing.Extremely tight, loose or inconsistent spacing not only hinderslegibility but also appears unsightly.

Spacing between words should be tight without characterstouching. Allow more space between lines than betweenwords as this ensures that the eye travels easily along thelines. This is critical in blocks of text, as vertical spaces canform white rivers of unsightly space.

All lettering is set as normal line spacing, that is, set solidwith no additional line spacing (or leading).

Software programs used for sign layout and the cutting ofvinyl lettering should include the facility to adjust irregularspaces that appear between some letter combinations.

  • 6 The SlimSlatz Systemor equivalent System >SlimSlatz or equivalent EdgesAs well as the standard slat sizes, faceplates of variable sizemay be included into a sign slat by using edge slats that accept1mm aluminium sheet. Two types of edge plate are available:SlimSlatz HF Edge for non standard Header and Footers andthe SlimSlatz Edge (figure 2) or equivalent.

End caps to be either anodised aluminium or black plastic tosimplify the addition or removal of slats.

Double sided suspended signsDirectional signs that are both suspended and double sideduse the same fittings as for the single sided wall mountedsigns and are assembled back to back. Instead of a SquareSidetrack a Quadrant Sidetrack is used (figure 4).

Slats fixingFixing of modular clip and track system slats to either wallsor doors to be with the aid of heavy duty double sided tape.Screwing of slats to surfaces not to be used.

All mandatory signs to be screw fixed to walls and or doors.

Internal signage through the University of Melbourne is basedupon the SlimSlatz modular clip and track system or anequivalent.

SlimSlatz or equivalent Clips andSquare SidetracksSlats of standard depth (20, 40, 60 and 80mm) and variablewidth are fitted to plastic clips that fit into square side tracks(figure 1). A plastic clip may be positioned in the centre of thesign when its width is very wide and extra support is requiredor the sign needs to be joined in the middle (figure 3).

SlimSlatz or equivalent Header/FootersSlats positioned at the top and bottom of a sign assembly areknown as header/footers (HF). These HF slats are marginallydeeper than the standard slats to accommodate a return thatconceals all fixings. When calculating the depth of signs anadditional 2mm per HF Slat must be added.

Lettering and sign sizesSizes of lettering are related to the depth of sign slats.

When one line of lettering is used, the letter height is 11mm.

With two lines the letter height is one quarter of the slat depth.Sizes are specified in millimetres and measured on the heightof the capital letter not the lower case ascender.

Within the Garamond family of lettering the ascender is tallerthan the capital letter height .

These charts provide a quick reference when specifying signs.

Disability symbolsThe internationally recognised symbols for disability accessand audio aid shown here are to be used to identify facilities, direct users and identify access paths.

Colour and layoutThe graphic symbols are reproduced in white on a UniversityBlue background for maximum contrast. The disability accessfigure when identifying a facility faces right. When used inconjunction with an arrow it faces the direction the arrow ispointing and is placed behind it. The arrow and lettering arereproduced in black. Examples for the use of the symbolwith lettering are shown here.

An awareness of the variety of difficulties that people canpossess is important if signs are to be effective. Viewingheights and distances, backgrounds and illumination mustbe considered when identifying facilities, services andaccess routes.

Viewing distancesA minimum size of 60 x 60mm for disability symbols is setfor a required viewing distance of up to 7 meters.

Symbols 110 x 110mm (with lettering) are used for viewingdistances of 7 to 18 meters. Beyond a distance of 18 metersthe symbol size should be 200 x 200mm and may be usedwithout lettering.

  • 20 Directional Signs >LetteringLettering used in the header slat is Garamond BoldCondensed and in subsequent slats Garamond BookCondensed.

The sequence of slats will depend on the directions beingindicated. Destinations straight ahead should be placed atthe top and others placed alternately from one side to theother.

Horizontal and angled arrows are placed at the side to whichthey point. Where practicable angled up arrows shouldprecede horizontal arrows. Angled down arrows shouldfollow horizontal arrows.

Graphic symbolsGraphic symbols (60 x 60mm) are centred on the depth ofthe slat.

Wall mounted signsWall mounted directional signs use 60 x 750mm slats. The width may be custom cut to suit site conditions.

Selecting a narrower slat width may be necessary insituations where space is limited.

Keep the number of slats to a minimum and text as conciseas possible. The use of punctuation symbols is to be kept toa minimum and abbreviations standardised.

Graphic symbolsGraphic symbols (60 x 60mm) occupy the full width of the slat.

Suspended signsWhere it is important to immediately identify the building, faculty or department within the building itself, a blue headerslat is used. Keep the number of slats to a minimum for headclearance and efficient legibility. Accurate positioning of allelements on the slat is illustrated on the following pages.

ConstructionThe header slat and subsequent slats are 80 x 1200mm.Widths of slat may be adjusted to suit each individual site.

ColourThe header slat is University Blue with lettering in white.Subsequent slats are in satin natural anodised aluminiumwith black lettering.

Display/direction signsWhen information is not required to be displayed using thesystem of slats, or when distinctive visual impact is required, custom made faceplates can be fitted to provide theopportunity for a graphic display.

The header slat is University Blue with white Garamond BoldCondensed lettering. One or two lines of lettering may beused. The width, depth and possibly colour of the faceplatebeing determined by design and purpose.

LetteringThe relationship between lettering and the width of theheader slat follows consistent guidelines. In the exampleshown here the faceplate incorporates a Garamond BookCondensed letter. The arrow is the same as the letter height.

Information is positioned either aligned left or right dependingupon the direction required. Each block of information isseparated by a space equal to the letter height being used.

  • 24 Level Directories >Floor level directoriesIn buildings with several levels, smaller directories may be required close to lifts providing more detailed localinformation.

ConstructionThe 60mm blue header slat is positioned at the top followedby 20mm natural anodised aluminium slats. The width of slatused will be determined by the content of the sign.Nominally they will be either 500mm or 750mm.

LetteringThe header slat lettering is either 30mm (1 line) or 15mm (2lines) Garamond Bold and Book Condensed. For thesecondary information slats the lettering is 10mmincorporating both weights of letter and arranged to suit theinformation being presented.Various options are possiblewhen listing information.List the information in the order ofname, department, level (if required) and room ordepartment, name, level (if required) and room. Text may beindented but avoid its overuse as it can result in a staggeredlayout that is hard to read and ugly.

Floor location plansWithin buildings there is the requirement for plans to belocated at strategic places to assist in locating importantfacilities.

ConstructionThe 40mm blue header slat fits above an A3 (420 x 297mm)sized faceplate which will accommodate an A3 laser print or photocopy (the plan may be printed onto the faceplate). The University logo is applied to the header slat as a Decal.A glass sheet is mounted to cover the display and to protectthe plan/map displayed.

LetteringHeader slat lettering is 11mm Garamond Bold Condensedfor the first line and Garamond Book Condensed for thesecond. Lettering used in the plan drawing is predominantlythe Book weight with Bold being used for emphasising keypoints.

Floor plansDirectories and maps are to be planned as coordinated unitsforming an important focus at the entrance to a faculty.

ConstructionThe header slat is 60 x 500mm with the map printed onto a1mm aluminium faceplate finished in satin natural anodisedaluminium or on a coloured ground that is in keeping withthe surrounding interior colour scheme. The faceplate isfitted into a SlimSlatz Edge and HF Edge or similar.

A glass sheet may be mounted to cover the display andprotect the map and directory.

Plans are simplified with architectural details kept to aminimum.

Graphic symbols are used to indicate services and facilitieswith text confined to labelling entrances, rooms and roomnumbers. Proposals for the design and layout of plansshould be presented for comment and approval.

Foyers and entrances provide the opportunity to introducepeople to a faculty or department creating an immediateimpression, projecting both the identity and personality ofthe faculty and the University. The header slat is 60mm withsubsequent slats 20mm. The width of the directories arenominally set at 500mm and may be customised to suit theparticular location.

Text is arranged in columns and aligned left, with the roomnumber occupying the last column and aligned right with theUniversity logo.

Foyer design and interior colour schemes may requiredirectories to be in keeping with the surroundings.Alternative proposals may be presented but consistencywith the overall visual style must be ensured. Variousoptions are possible when listing information. List theinformation in the order of name, department, level androom or department, name, level and room. Text may beindented but avoid its overuse as it can result in a staggeredlayout that is hard to read and ugly.
