Speaker: But how do the pistons and cylinders work together?

Speaker: To understand the function of the IC engine, it helps to begin with the piston.

Speaker: The piston is the part of the engine that contains the expanding gas created during the chemical reaction of combustion.

Speaker: Adjoined to the piston is the connecting rod.

Speaker: This rod transfers the energy from the piston to last main component of the system known as the crankshaft.

Speaker: The crankshaft spins and in the process outputs mechanical power from the engine to other systems in the vehicle.

Speaker: It is important to know that the crankshaft is designed in a certain way so that each piston and connecting rod will work together optimally.

Speaker: Which allows for the most power output possible.

Speaker: With the engine block in place, the cylinders are now shown holding each piston.

Speaker: The cylinder constrains the movement of the piston to the range of motion shown in the animation.

Speaker: At the top of each cylinder, the fuel would be injected and then burned to push the piston downward.

Speaker: Ultimately the piston and cylinder arrangement contains the exploding gas from the combustion process and transfers the energy to the mechanical output of the rotating crankshaft.
