INTERNALANDEXTERNALASSESSMENTSInternalandExternalAssessmentsOneofthefirststepsinthestrategicassessmentprocessgenerallyinvolvesidentifyingtheorganization’sstrengths,weaknesses,opportunitiesandthreats(theSWOTanalysis).Thishelpsbuildastrongfoundationofknowledgetoensurethedevelopmentofastrategicplanthatremainsrelevant,meetstheneedsofthechangingclientpopulation,andmakesthebestoftheavailableresources.TheInternalAssessmentisaninventoryofthestrengthsandweaknessesoftheorganization’soperations.Itincludesasurveyofhumanandphysicalresources,ananalysisofthesatisfactionofclientsandstakeholders,andanassessmentoftheeffectivenessoftheBoardandofthestaff.Theresultofaninternalassessmentrevealsthestrengthsandweaknessesthatconfronttheorganization.TheExternalAssessment,orExternalEnvironmentalScan,isaninventoryofthepolitical,economic,social,andtechnologicalforcesthatinfluencethemissionandgoalsofanorganization,andhowitfunctions.Itinvolvesanalysisofthecurrentenvironmentandthetrendsthatmayaffectit.Italsoincludesananalysisofcompetitiveandcollaborativeforcesandagents.Theresultofanexternalassessmentrevealstheopportunitiesandthreatsthatconfronttheorganization.TypesofStakeholdersYoumaywishtoconsultbothinternalandexternalstakeholderswhenconductingaSWOTanalysis.Internalstakeholdersareindividualsworkingdirectlywithintheorganization,andexternalstakeholdersareindividualswhodonotworkdirectlywithintheorganizationbutmaybeaffectedinsomewaybytheorganization.Stakeholdersinclude:
