SOLID WOOD FLOORING Solid wood flooring is milled from a solid piece of lumber and shaped to impart the tongue and groove to the edges and/or ends. Solid wood flooring is made in thicknesses of 3/4 inches or 5/16 inches .

ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORINGAssembled into panels (like plywood) with 3–10 layers of wood veneer with the grain of adjacent plies perpendicular.Engineered wood flooring ranges from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch thick, and the top (i.e.,wear) layer ranges from 1/16 inch to 1/6 inch thick. Due to its multi-ply construction,engineered wood flooring is more stable than solid wood flooring .

Engineered wood is real wood, but instead of one solid piece it consists of three to 10 thin layers of wood, called plies, that are assembled and glued in a cross-ply construction. The top layer of wood can range from 0.6mm to 6mm thickness. Overall board thickness ranges from 10mm to 21mm.Engineered wood is much more stable than solid wood and is less susceptible to shrinking and expanding with changes in temperatures and humidity.

STYLES OF WOOD FLOORING

Strip Flooring It is made entirely of solid pieces of wood,

generally ¾" in thickness and 2 ¼" to 3 ¼" in width.

Each individual board is machined with a tongue on one side and one end, and a groove on the opposite end and side. All boards are nailed down, one at a time, taking care to offset the end joints to create a pleasing pattern.

Random Plank Any wood flooring material 3" wide or more

is termed "plank flooring." Plank flooring is available in both square edge and bevel edge (V groove).

Parquet Small pieces arranged in different designs Pre-finished squares for easy installation

Page 16: Interiors Flooring Ppt

Herringbone It is an elegant, upscale flooring style, most often found in museums and high end homes. This effect is generated by installing flooring pieces of equal length, usually between 9 to 24 inches, at a 90 degree angle respectively, with the ends cut at 90 degrees. A chevron pattern is basically the same but with a 45 degree cut corner where the boards meet at a square angle.

• Boards over 85 mm cover MUST be nailed with 2 nails per joist or batten

Gaps at each wall & in floors over 6m wide

Provide expansion gaps • Flooring will expand &

contract with moisture changes.

• Install expansion joints:– 10 mm gap at every

wall plate; & – intermediate gaps in

floors over 6 m wide.

• Use narrower boards for large areas of floor.

Page 22: Interiors Flooring Ppt

Tongue-and-groove: Tongue-and-groove flooring can be installed by

glue-down (both engineered and solid),

floating (mostly engineered only),   nail-down (not recommended for

most engineered).

"CLICK" SYSTEMS: A "click" floor is similar to tongue-and-groove, but instead of fitting directly into the groove, the board must be angled or "tapped" in to make the curved or barbed tongue fit into the modified groove.

INSTALLATION SYSTEMS

Page 23: Interiors Flooring Ppt

Floor connection system: The general principle is to have grooves on all four sides of the plank with a separate, unconnected, piece that is inserted into the grooves of two planks to join them.

Glue DownWood flooring can also be glued-down. A layer of plastic is placed onto the sub-floor . The wood pieces are then laid on top of the glue and hammered into place using a rubber mallet and nail.

FINISHING, REFINISHING, AND SANDINGFloor finishesThe two most popular modern finishes for wood flooring are :Oil Polyurethane

Oil - Oil finished floors are made from naturally derived drying oils, and are not to be confused with petroleum based oils.

Polyurethane - The two most common are straight polyurethane and oil-modified polyurethane. Both products are sold under various names including: urethane, lacquer, and varnish.

SandingSanding provides a method for smoothing an installed floor, compensating for unevenness of the subfloor. Additionally, sanding is used to renew the appearance of older floors.

Page 26: Interiors Flooring Ppt

1. Oil-modified urethane -•Most common surface finish • Easy to apply•Dries in about eight hours. 2. Moisture-cured urethane -•More durable •More moisture resistant than other surface finishes.•Non-yellowing •These finishes are extremely difficult to apply, have a strong odour  3. Water-based urethane -•Finishes are clear and non-yellowing •Dry in about two to three hours. •Water-based urethanes are generally more expensive. 4. Penetrating Sealers -•This type of finish often have a colour and can be used to stain and seal the wood floor.  5. Paste Wax-•Wax is the easiest to apply, •Least expensive, •Fastest drying, •Easiest to repair, and•With proper care will survive forever.

Page 42: Interiors Flooring Ppt

Using an adhesive: •The stone can be fixed to concrete screed or suspended wooden floors.  •Flexible additive should be used in the adhesive and grout with suspended floors, Under floor heating and externally.   •Before fixing the tiles ensure that the sub-floor is true and level, free from contamination and loose areas and properly prepared to give a good bond.  •Ensure that the background to be adhered to is thoroughly dry, solidly bedded, and free from dust and friable matter before starting to tile.  •Some fixers will paint the sub-floor with a bonding agent

White cement adhesive should be used as coloured cement may seep through to the face of the stone.  Painting the back of the stone with a bonding agent will inhibit any leaching.
