a message from our chief executive, david lawtherTo say that the market for construction has been challenging over the last period would be an understatement. The downturn has seen many organisations wind down their once grand plans for a more sustainable future. yet for ISg, sustainability continues to be central to our strategy to succeed in the market both now and in the future. In essence, sustainability makes good business sense.
we are finding that in a highly competitive market, customers are becoming evermore demanding in areas of sustainability best practice. we are winning work by investing in communities through our policy of establishing local offices, employing local people and using local supply chains.
It is a personal priority that our progress against our stated commitment is measurable. In line with this I am delighted to be able to report that for the fourth year running we have increased the level of recycled material from site. we also continue to invest in our talented employees. for example, 19 people completed leadership in energy and environmental design (leed) or building Research establishment environmental assessment model (bReeam) training over the past 12 months. This training will help to underpin the advice we give to our customers on how to achieve a more sustainable future through an informed approach to construction.
our focus is to direct our strategy into areas where we have a direct and marked influence – benefiting not only our organisation and its direct stakeholders, but also the wider community.
isg wins 20 international safety awards received from the British safety council.

Introductionas a company working in the construction industry, our impact on sustainability is far reaching. we have the ability to physically change landscapes using a multitude of materials, we use natural resources during the construction process, produce waste, work in a variety of communities and employ a large workforce. as a publicly listed company we are responsible to our shareholders for our financial performance. In summary, our work affects people, the planet and the prosperity of many on a daily basis and this is what formed the basis of our first sustainability policy in 2007. we are committed to continual improvement. People, planet and prosperity continue to be the cornerstones of our policy today and for the future.

The future of the construction industry will be shaped by the individuals who work in it, and as a major employer in the sector, ISg has a key role to play.
Policy objective: develop skills and opportunitiesdeveloPIng ouR PeoPle
we are committed to developing our employees, as well as others seeking to work in construction, to reach their full potential.
for example, we have developed a training matrix which defines the core competencies that are required for individual roles within the organisation. This provides a framework of training opportunities to support career-long learning and personal development.
In the 2009–10 reporting period ISg staff received an average of 2.98 training days per year which is 26% better than the industry average.
Industry averages for training are defined by the construction excellence Key Performance Indicators (KPI) known as “Respect for People Key Performance Indicators”.
This KPI measures the number of training days per person per year in the construction sector and provides a benchmark against the industry average.
In line with our approach to developing our people, ISg cathedral has trialled 360-degree appraisals with a view to rolling the system out across other ISg companies. Seven senior managers at ISg cathedral took part. The process commenced with the managers collectively establishing a typical profile of a good manager within ISg cathedral and continued with each individual measuring themselves against those attributes. This enabled the board to appreciate the existing strengths and work on gaps for continuous improvement.

“The 360-degree senior team evaluation has helped me understand the dynamics of the team and areas of focus for stimulating continuous improvement. Personally, I found the process rewarding and enlightening and I have adapted my own style as a result.” daRRen hIll, md ISg caThedRal
employees at ISg Jackson have recently completed the latest Professional and Personal awareness (PaPa) course. The course was structured to provide a professional and personal skills framework for year two and three Trainees in the business. It covered a wide range of personal and managerial development and concluded with each candidate presenting to the academy board on a part of the course which they have implemented into their working lives.
our employees have access to the ISg academy – an in-house centre for learning and development. The academy helps employees to excel in their existing role, prepare for career progression and offers access to lifelong learning. In the uK, the academy includes a 70-seat lecture theatre and training room at the Ipswich office, training facilities at the london and bristol offices and also a joinery-specific academy in whitstable.
as the geography of the group expands, initiatives such as easily accessed e-learning modules are being developed and in late 2010 the company will install a group-wide intranet to facilitate communication and information sharing.
our commitment to education spreads far wider than our employees. for example, ISg Regions is taking part in an initiative to provide school leavers with an insight into the construction industry – and the opportunity to earn a professional accreditation. The scheme is being piloted at ISg’s £400K project to refurbish a youth centre in newton heath, manchester. The refurbishment is being funded by the uK government’s youth capital Plus programme as part of its commitment to reduce youth unemployment, promote skills training and provide high-quality youth facilities in neighbourhoods that have traditionally suffered from higher levels of crime and anti-social behaviour. ISg welcomed five school leavers onto site for an intensive three-week introduction to construction.
“ISg has really embraced this important initiative, which is a key element of our youth employment strategy.” TeRRy wIncheSTeR, PRoJecT manageR aT mancheSTeR cITy councIl
Policy objective: be socially responsiblehealTh and SafeTy The health and safety of our people and construction sites is imperative for ISg, and this has been recognised by the leading bodies which have awarded the company many times in the last year.
ISg was presented with a record number of achievement awards at this year’s The Royal Society for the Prevention of accidents (RoSPa) occupational health and Safety awards ceremony. we collected an impressive 31 RoSPa awards including two Silver awards, 22 gold awards, and seven gold medals.
”ISg is dedicated to providing a safe working environment for its clients, employees and the wider public.”
davId lawTheR, ceo, ISg
In another acknowledgement of our dedication to health and safety, the british Safety council awarded 20 International Safety awards to ISg projects. a formal submission was made for each award and was judged by an independent adjudication panel which is looking for demonstration of good health and safety policy, plans and commitment and a continued improvement of culture within the organisation.
In the uK the health and Safety executive monitors the performance of organisations by measuring the number of

ISg Interior’s Sustainability charter for the fit out of KPmg’s new canary wharf office (Project gold) included the use of the project to enrich the lives of others living and working in the surrounding community. Two of ISg Interior’s sustainability champions, lucy hall and Pip Stone, worked with the Project gold team on a number of initiatives and on 16 february 2010 presented the “Project gold employability day”.
The employability day was designed to give students studying for a career in construction some real-life experience and a chance to interact with people involved in delivering a live project. Students from the university of east london, studying for degrees in construction, architecture and engineering, applied to take part in this event. The 18 successful candidates joined lucy and Pip along with members of the Project gold team, KPmg, Swanke hayden connell, ec harris and aecom.
“I cannot thank you enough for all of the effort you put into making yesterday’s employability day such a resounding success. The students and my uel colleagues were delighted with the whole day and the students and staff got a great deal out of it.” uel’S emPloyabIlITy develoPmenT manageR, maRgoT RIchaRdSon
following the day at Project gold we met again with the award-winning students. one of them, Pathy muhirwa, was looking for work experience. we looked at our projects to see if we could accommodate him and were delighted when Pathy joined the project team at The ark for a work experience placement.
emPloyee volunTeeRIng
In february 2010, ISg Interior launched its volunteering policy, giving every permanent employee the opportunity to spend two days per year away from their normal role so they can volunteer on a project which will, in turn, enhance their skills. The two days are additional to any project specific community engagement activities. our first event, an “Insight Tour”, was held in conjunction with city gateway and took place on 19 march 2010. a group of 16–19 year olds from Tower hamlets, not in employment, education or training (neeTs) visited our head office at aldgate house, london. The aim of the day was to show them the range of people and skills involved in our business, help them identify which skills they already have and to practice their interview techniques.

“The impact of this in terms of broadening their horizons, and opening their eyes to the opportunities available on their own front doorsteps, was invaluable.” Tom conQueST, cITy gaTeway
To follow-up on our Insight Tour we held interviews for three 13-week work placements at our head office in aldgate house, london. Three successful candidates have started working with us in administrative roles to gain invaluable work experience.
“I’m getting a lot of experience here in all different types of office work. I think it will help me get a job in the future. I like the people here and the environment.” Syeda, cITy gaTeway neeT
Policy objective: promote sustainable development throughout our supply chainat both KPmg Project gold and man group Riverbank house, ISg Interior has held Sustainability workshops with the supply chain. The workshops were attended by representatives from the entire project supply chain before any works commenced on site. The half-day sessions provided an opportunity to outline the project targets and then work with the subcontractors to come up with initiatives and innovations for the project.
“The sustainability workshop is beneficial for breaking down barriers between subcontractors in order to find solutions and ideas to improve sustainability on the project as a whole.” Paul JacKSon, PRoJecT manageR london dRy wall
To encourage a sustainable approach, our london businesses recognised excellence in their supply chain’s performance at the company’s annual Platinum Trade contractor awards held on 9 June 2010.
congratulations to this year’s winners:
• fit out award – brown & carroll
• construction award – Taylor made Joinery
• health & Safety award – ground construction
• Sustainability award – electrosonic*
• best of the best – brown & carroll
Roland nutter, group commercial director said, “at our annual Platinum awards event we share our vision and strategy for the future and formally recognise our Platinum partners’ performance.”
Three subcontractors’ supervisors were presented with a ‘working with ISg award’ by mike Prettyman at a recent event held at aldgate house. The awards help us to more fully engage with the managers of our trade contractors on a broader and longer term basis.
They recognise excellence for:
• understanding and complying with our systems and procedures
• engaging with the team for the benefit of the project
• displaying values and an approach, consistent with our culture and way of working.
moving forwardTo further the objectives of our policy, we have developed a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy for 2010/2011. This is designed to enable us to collate statistical outputs and set improvement targets in the future. under People, our strategy is as follows:
people SocIalcommunity engagement• Implement a volunteering policy for permanent
employees• Implement a charity funding policy• establish criteria to assess projects to implement
community engagement PlanSustainability Training• disseminate the ISg sustainability policy to

* Three years ago the london businesses introduced a Sustainability category to the annual Platinum awards. all trade contracting organisations are invited to submit an entry which is scrutinised by a panel of judges who select a group of finalists and an ultimate overall winner for the year. The winner of the Sustainability award for 2009/2010 was electrosonic.

as a responsible business we seek to minimise our use of natural resources and production of waste, while maximising our use of sustainable materials and our recycling. we work to protect biodiversity and prevent pollution, and have a clear focus on reducing our carbon footprint. The following are examples of some of our achievements in these areas:
Policy objective: increase resource efficiency, reduce dependence on non‑renewable resources, reduce our carbon footprint.laRge conSTRucTIon, Reduced ImPacT
even when working on the construction of large and complex projects, we always consider our effect on the environment. for instance, during the construction of the 35-storey nido tower in the city of london – a major new student accommodation building designed to house 1,200 individuals – ISg South collected and stored rainwater to flush the site toilets and urinals. a 4,300 litre rainwater harvesting system was installed in the basement which collected water from the roof areas. This was then filtered and pumped to the toilet areas into header tanks ready for flushing the toilets. It is estimated that this saved over 850,000 litres of potable water during the construction period.
Similarly, on the olympic velodrome, ISg South is working closely with hopkins architects and the Trade contractors to ensure that only the most sustainable materials and components are used in this landmark project. The aim is to make the velodrome the most sustainable venue of the london 2012 olympic games.
The concrete in the foundations and structure has up to 76% recycled aggregates and 40% recycled cement substitutes. The steel frame includes reused pipework sections and has a minimum of 60% recycled content. every piece of timber delivered to the site comes from sustainable sources and is certified by either the fSc or Pefc schemes. even the internal blockwork walls contain 60% recycled material and the cavity insulation is made from recycled car windscreens.
ISg is using the wRaP net waste Toolkit to measure and monitor all key materials to validate the recycled content of the velodrome. currently 34% of all materials used in the velodrome come from secondary or recycled sources which well exceeds the 20% olympic Park target and leads uK construction Industry best practice.
In the uK the cRc energy efficiency Scheme is a new regulatory incentive to improve energy efficiency in large public and private sector organisations. ISg is registered as a full participant of the scheme which means that we will calculate our energy usage from all of our uK operations and
planet envIRonmenTal our main policy objectives are to:• Increase resource efficiency, reduce dependence on non-

make an annual declaration to the environment agency. allowances will then be purchased from the government for every ton of co2 produced.
SuSTaInable TRavel
as part of ISg’s efficiency programme further energy audits will be undertaken in all of our permanent offices around the world to help ensure that usage is minimised and our carbon footprint is reduced.
ISg offices have travel plans to encourage employees to use public or low carbon methods of transport to work. for example, in the uK ISg Jackson has recently teamed up with Thomas’s cycles of Ipswich to allow its people to buy cycles cost effectively in order to promote cycling within the business as part of a cycle-to-work scheme.
we believe in both short-term and long-term solutions to carbon reduction. for example, in conjunction with mSK, ISg Interior’s project at o2 is offsetting all co2 emissions from waste vehicle journeys to and from site. as the o2 project is in Slough and mSK’s materials Recovery facility (mRf) is in barking (a distance of 35 miles), the project team is conscious of the co2 impact of waste vehicles travelling this long distance. They therefore decided on the short-term solution of offsetting this co2 while at the same time ISg strives to expand its waste contractor database to include more regional contractors.
Policy objective: minimise waste and maximise recyclingThe construction industry historically produces a lot of waste. In the uK over 30% of the total waste is produced by construction and demolition activities. ISg is determined to minimise waste wherever possible and when waste is produced we are committed to disposing of it responsibly, recycling as much as possible.
In the uK we are involved with waste and Resources action Programme (wRaP) ‘halving waste to landfill’ initiative which requires organisations to set targets for waste reduction and report progress annually. for example, ISg Interior is delighted to report that it is on target to fulfil its voluntary commitment to wRaP’s halving waste to landfill initiative. by 2012 our fit out team aims to have reduced its waste to landfill from its 2008 baseline position of 0.72 tonnes to 0.36 tonnes for every £100k spent on a project. Interior’s 2009 result of a 32% reduction of waste to landfill demonstrates that its 2012 target is clearly achievable.
ISg Pearce beat its target of achieving a minimum of 90% of waste to be diverted from landfill, another landmark on our journey of meeting the wRaP ‘half waste To landfill commitment’. a prime requirement of many of Pearce’s retail customers is to achieve this target.
‘we are delighted to see ISg taking action on their halving waste to landfill commitments and reporting the results so far.’ dR. mIKe waTSon – head of conSTRucTIon, wRaP
across the business, teams are working with their clients, designers, subcontractors and waste contractors to minimise the waste produced on projects as well as improving site segregation and waste recycling rates. on our construction projects, waste workshops are held to bring expertise together to find practical solutions to prevent waste. as well as reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill the approach can also bring economic benefits to all stakeholders.
woRKIng wITh InduSTRy colleagueS
In conjunction with wRaP, ISg Interior held a “designing out waste workshop” at ISg head office at aldgate house. The day was attended by key architects who work with ISg, and presented them with a unique forum to learn new skills that will enable them to identify opportunities to design out waste in fit out projects.
“It’s amazing how many ideas were generated.” gaRy ThomPSon, cRowTheR aSSocIaTeS
our project teams evaluate the potential for reusing materials and the results are recorded in the project specific Site waste management Plan. materials are often reused on the project or are given to charities and other organisations. a good example is canon bridge house, where ISg Interior completed the fit out of Ig Index’s new offices. Reuse was a strong focus on the project – and in line with this the team endeavoured to find a reuse for as many strip out items as possible. Items were donated to two charities – mission without borders – an organisation dedicated to serving the physical and emotional needs of those suffering the effects of poverty or persecution – and St mungo’s – which provides services including hostels, drug and alcohol support and job training.
ISg partners with a number of specialist construction waste management companies to help ensure that any waste that is produced is recycled as much as possible to minimise the amount sent to landfill.
on projects where there is sufficient space for on site segregation we can significantly improve the amount of waste that we recycle.

case study: KPmg, canary wharf, london
at ISg Interior’s KPmg Project gold, canary wharf, there was a target of 90% diversion of waste from landfill. The project segregated timber, metal, hardcore, plasterboard, packaging, carpet, vinyl, raised access floor tiles and mixed waste on the construction floors as well as office waste and canteen waste. In total, the project diverted 1072 tonnes of waste from landfill and achieved a recycling rate of 95%.

construction activities can have a detrimental effect on wildlife and biodiversity. on ISg projects we work together with local and national protection agencies to ensure the effects of our operations are minimised. This can include the protection of ecosystems and plant life to the protection and relocation of animals. for example, ISg Jackson has pledged its ongoing support to local conservation charity Suffolk wildlife Trust (SwT) with the donation of a new store shed at its ashbocking headquarters.
our respect for wildlife extends to our work on projects. when discovering a gull had nested in the middle of a site, construction manager nick hedley contacted the RSPb and natural england to ask for advice on how to handle the situation. The RSPb confirmed that the nest would need to be protected. due to the prominent position of her nest it was decided that all work on site would have to stop in that area until the hatchling had grown enough to make its first unaccompanied flight. The project team erected barriers and put up signs to warn everyone on site of the situation.

all uK-based ISg companies are independently certified to the requirements of ISo14001 – the international standard for environmental management Systems. also parts of the ISg asia business are currently undergoing assessment to the same standard. compliance to this standard requires that we determine the risks of pollution creation from our activities and ensures that mitigation measures are used. all of our projects include a detailed evaluation of the works to be undertaken and use procedures and equipment to prevent pollution.
we have never been prosecuted for creating or causing pollution.we have management systems in place within all ISg companies that cover all aspects of health and safety, quality and environmental management – as well as including advice and guidance on our sustainability initiatives.
To help ensure that our procedures are in accordance with the highest standards we have certified all uK-based companies in accordance with the latest versions of the three main international standards for management systems. These are:
• ISo14001:2004 environmental management Systems
• ISo9001:2008 Quality management Systems
• ohSaS18001:2007 occupational health & Safety management Systems
we are very proud that this year our hong Kong operations achieved certification to ISo14001 with assistance from the hong Kong Productivity council. The certification of our hong Kong operations is only the beginning of our journey towards ISo 14001accreditation for all the offices in the ISg asia group.
our certification bodies carry out routine inspections and audits of our offices and sites to ensure that we are compliant with these standards. This is in addition to the more routine internal audits and inspections that are carried out by our compliance managers and by our teams of health, Safety, Quality and environmental advisors. It is just one way in which we go ‘above and beyond’ what is required.

Through projects and local events ISg Pearce sites raised a total of £14,239 for local charities this year. a team from western Regional construction took part in a ‘spinning challenge’ and raised £1,000 for the Juvenile diabetes Research foundation.
also at ISg Pearce, Tom Pook, Site manager, cycled from John o’groats to land’s end raising over £1,000 for Prostate uK. Pete creese, environmental manager tamed his formerly wild locks in a charity haircut that raised £1,000 for the haiti earthquake appeal and £410 for casa alianza.
employees from ISg Regions’ manchester office undertook the gruelling manchester to blackpool bike ride to raise money for leading cancer treatment centre, The christie. ISg rode the 60-mile challenge as part of the manchester city council team and helped add over £1,000 to the total raised by the event. In the team was ex-ISg employee Paul manning mbe – now an an olympic gold medal pursuit cyclist.

as part of ISg asia’s sustainability programme and following the success of charity auctions held elsewhere in the region, we hosted our inaugural hong Kong charity auction at our new premises in w Square. The evening ended with hK$338,888 raised for Sowers action – a charity which carries out education assistance in china with the aim of improving education for impoverished regions. To date, ISg asia has raised more than hK$1 million for children-linked charitable causes through our charity auctions held throughout asia.

we have a core value of fulfilling our own people’s potential. but we don’t stop there. we feel it is important both for us and our industry that we continue to engage with young people through our work with schools and colleges to show them the wealth of interesting career opportunities that exists in construction. for example, the ISg Jackson academy has a long-standing professional relationship with colchester Institute which provides the construction and commercial degree course training for many of the ISg Jackson Trainees. In response to a health and safety request by the Institute, ISg Jackson provided a number of hi-viz coats and bibs for the Institute for use by the students when undertaking engineering activities in and around colchester.
as part of ISg Regions’ community engagement, pupils from wrenthorpe Primary School in wakefield were invited to design an awareness poster to keep children safe and away from the dangers of construction sites. The school has recently undergone a £230K improvement programme, which has seen ISg build an extension to create a new
children’s centre, as well as remodel and refurbish existing accommodation.
Two parties of construction students from Reaseheath college were recently invited by ISg Regions to take a guided tour of their £1 million project to build an advanced dairy processing facility at the 500-acre cheshire campus. around 30 students and their tutors from the college’s bricklaying and carpentry courses visited the site.
ISg Regions recently delivered north warwickshire & hinckley college’s new centre for the creative arts and media. In addition to providing a great job on the build, ISg partnered with the college in the delivery of the diploma in construction and the built environment, which is aimed at 14–19 year olds.
we believe that you are never too young to learn about health and safety. Pupils from lady elizabeth hastings’ church of england Primary School in wetherby were recently invited to take a tour of ISg Regions’ £19 million project at hmP wealstun. following a safety awareness talk and dvd presentation by ISg’s health & Safety advisor mick Quealy, a number of year 3 pupils donned PPe gear and prepared to walk the short distance to the site, where ISg is upgrading and modernising the existing prison facilities. considerate constructor mascot, Ivor goodsite, was on hand to greet the children on their arrival and the pupils and their teachers were then given a guided tour of the site, which included a visit to the cells. Similarly, on a project in bristol, ISg Interior’s team carried out a Site Safety assembly at local school hannah more Primary. with the help of Ivor goodsite from the considerate constructors Scheme, the team taught the children about the health and safety hazards of building sites and environmental issues on site.
The team also involved the children by having them participate in a poster competition to promote site safety.
The winning entries were enlarged and used to decorate the external hoarding of the site.
The same team also donated their time and construction expertise over easter to renovate a tired room that was used as an after-school club. This breathed new life into a room used not only for out of school activities, but also for cooking activities, small group work and parents’ courses.

we acknowledge that construction sites can be disruptive to the community. but we are committed to minimising any inconvenience and disturbance. That is why we were a founder member of the uK national considerate constructors Scheme. we remain committed to this day, winning an outstanding 15 awards this year. The considerate constructors Scheme annual national Site awards are given to approximately 7½% of the uK’s highest scoring sites. The awards recognise each site’s excellent standards of consideration towards their workforce, their neighbours and the environment. ISg’s tally of 15 awards is especially significant his year as the Scheme has introduced a more stringent scoring process.
This year also saw ISg Interior’s Transport for london Palestra project in Southwark winning Runner up for the prestigious ‘most considerate Site 2010’ for its work in the local community. The project’s construction manager John canny proudly accepted the award at the presentation ceremony held at Plaisterer’s hall in london.

Policy objective: improve the capability of the isg group to provide more sustainable servicesenvIRonmenTal aSSeSSmenT modelS
we have completed a number of projects with environmental assessment models this year. In this field, the most common model used in the uK is building Research establishment environmental assessment method (bReeam). Internationally, the most comment model is leadership in energy and environmental design (leed).
whatever the environmental assessment model used, our aim is the same – to outperform in our industry. for
example in malaysia, Steelcase’s global Shared Services centre (gSS), located within mid valley gardens, is a 33,000 sq ft cutting-edge facility that houses both its sales and global business back office support functions. most importantly, the facility became the first leed (commercial Interiors) compliant corporate office in malaysia. It provides a suite of international standards for environmentally sustainable construction.

caSe STudy: ISg InTeRIoR - KPmg PRoJecT gold
introduction
ISg completed the fit out of KPmg’s new london headquarters at canary wharf in august 2010. The 425,000 sq ft fit out from shell and core to cat b comprised 14 levels plus four basements to provide accommodation for over 3,000 employees.
To help ensure every opportunity was maximised, the team produced a Sustainability Project charter. This served to guide attitudes, actions and decisions throughout the project with great success. by setting targets at the offset the team worked to secure the following:
considerate constructors
a target score of 36/40 was set – the project achieved a score of 37/40
waste management
The project aimed to recycled 90% of all waste on site – they achieved a recycling rate of 95.1%. The amount of waste sent to landfill was under half the amount required to achieve a bReeam best Practice rating.
recycled content
The target was for all construction materials to have 20% recycled content. The result achieved was 33.9%. although ISg cannot always influence the choice of materials used in a project, we understand the rigorous measurement methods involved which which helps us offer educated suggestions.
breeam
The project was awarded bReeam ‘excellent’ following its post-construction review. The project underwent stringent criteria in order to deliver sustainable objectives related to the fit out as well as the effect on its stakeholders and the environment. This award reflects ISg’s ability to comply to delivering sustainable efficiency guidelines such as:
• correct management of commissioning activities at project completion
• recycling of site and site office waste materials. The project achieved a construction waste recycling rate of 95% against a target of 90%
• co2 monitoring through measuring energy consumption on site and recording of vehicle emissions
• using fSc or Pefc certified timber
• demonstrating involvement in community work. one example was the employability day which resulted with a participant joining ISg Interior for work experience on a live project.
green travel
The project kept stringent travel logs and encouraged staff and operatives to follow a specially tailored green Travel Plan. on completion, the project demonstrated 72.8% of staff and operatives utilised public transport. Two-thirds of all staff and operatives lived less than 20 miles from site with 40% lived less than 10 miles away.
There were no reportable accidents or incidents in over 1.3 million man hours worked on this project.

another great example of our commitment to sustainable construction came through gateway college – a recently relocated premises moved from central leicester to new purpose-built facilities on an out-of-town site. The building is highly sustainable and incorporates an on-site biomass boiler, rainwater harvesting system and wind turbines, with low energy lighting and under floor heating
throughout. ISg construction formed a stringent plan was formed with our supply chain to minimise waste at source. an example of this was the cut and fill balance which altered the building design levels to ensure that no excess material was required to be brought on or off site. To reduce the carbon footprint of waste transfer wagons, all project waste produced was compacted on-site, limiting travel distances. The compacted waste was then removed periodically and segregated at our partnering contractor’s depot providing between 98%–100% recycled efficiency throughout the project.
we actively involved the client’s facilities management team in whole-life maintenance issues as the scheme’s design progressed. Through a series of workshops with all parties involved, we value engineered the scheme from circa £1.6 million to £1 million without compromising its overall aesthetic appearance. we understand that our client’s day-to-day business is delivering excellence in education. with this in mind, we involved all college staff throughout the build process, and conducted regular site visits in order to give them a better understanding of their new space.

In the uK, ISg Regions has delivered a new central ‘hub’ building – part of a £10 million redevelopment of blackpool & flyde college. It provides a centralised resource for student support facilities such as catering and learning resources, freeing up much-needed space in the existing buildings for future growth. The building was constructed on an existing car park within the campus. Inside, we created an impressive, state-of-the-art space, to inspire collaborative learning. The bReeam ‘excellent’ rated building also received a ‘building excellence’ award from blackpool council for its sustainability credentials.

whatever project we work on, we are absolutely committed to making time for sustainability and continually improving our performance in this area. our international Sustainability consultancy group consists of 12 members of staff representing all ISg companies. The group meets monthly to review the progress of the sustainability strategy and to set and agree policy and new initiatives and objectives. It presents to the ISg’s board to report progress and to agree new strategy objectives. The group also produces formal proposal documents for a wide range of sustainability issues, which detail research and recommendations for future actions.
The ISg Sustainability policy is reviewed each year by the group to ensure that it is up to date and is still relevant to our business activities. once agreed, the policy is signed by david lawther, ceo of ISg plc.
our achievements and progress towards our Sustainability Policy are recorded in this annual report and are made publicly available through our website: www.isgplc.com
