Postcards(continuedfromPg.2)beforeHooperHathawayHousewasmovedtooursite.Anothercardthatwastakenc1905.ThedonorwasquitesurethatitwasnotTheGables,basicallybecauseitdidn’thaveallofthegables.WeinvestigatedandfoundthatitwasindeedTheGables.Thedonorwasdelightedtolearnthathispostcardwaspre‐renovationwhenthestylewastohavea latterfaçade.Luckily,Ms.EmmertonhadthewisdomtorestorethehouseasithadbeeninbackinHawthorne’sday.WewelcomedonationsofanykindthatpertaintoTheHouseoftheSevenGables.Noticetheyellowhousetothebackintherightminusitsthird looraddi‐tionasseeninthepreviouspostcard.Manythankstoourdonorsfortheirthoughtfulness.

BornandraisedinSalem,KarareceivedherB.A.fromWellesleyCollege,MBAfromNortheasternUniversity,andMaster’sinEducationfromLesleyUniversity.ShecurrentlylivesinSalemwithherhusbandandtwochildren.“IamthrilledtohavethechancetobecomeapartoftheteamattheGables.IaminspiredbyCarolineEmmerton’slegacyandexcitedtohelpTheGablescarryoutitsmissiontocreatevaluededucationalopportunitiesforourcommunities.”

WereceivedacallthiswinterfromanewfriendinConnecticutwhopromptlyfoundacoupleofoldpostcardsofTheHouseofSevenGables.Acoupleweekslater,asimi‐larcallcameinfromRhodeIsland.Eachcallcamefromacaringindividualwhowasdonat‐inga“ ind”astheytookcareofcleaningoutatticsandoldrecords.Weweredelightedtoindafewversionsofthehousewehadn’t
seenbefore.Thisviewofthehousedated1910‐15isfromTurnerSt.beforethecentshopwasadded.NoticetheinsertofNathanielHawthornesportingaratherlargemustache.Ontherightthereappearsathreestoryyellowhouseinwhatisnowourparkinglot.Alsonoticethatthiswas(Cont’d.Pg.8)

ExtrasattheGables……TheSalemlightshinesitsauruleontonefromthewest‐ernsunsetinhopesofwarmerdaysofSpring,ifonlytheymighthasten.Piersarebarrenandthemooringsareallthat loatintheicybluewatersthatskatequicklyasiftheyknowit’stoocoldtolinger.There’sanoccasionalcormorantdivingforish,herringwethink.Thecurrentisswift,perfectforherringruns.Thesnowhastuckedusinandgivesanuptialglowtoeverynookinthegarden.Dusty,ourresidentMaineCooncat,continuestoloungeonthetissuepaperintheMuseumStoreandhasanoccasionalspatwithPete,themarmaladefelineoflesserrank.Peteisalwaysreadytovocalizehisopinionsandacceptapat.Thetwinklelightscrownthedormantwisteriaarborandsnowlacesthebrickwalkways.Themossonthewoodenshakesoutsidetheof icecontinuetoen‐chantme.Theygreetmeonthewalkafterwindorrainandtheysenduplittlesproutseveninthebonechillingspells.Theyareasmagicalasthisplace.,TheHouseoftheSevenGables.Takearideandmakeawintervisit.
