INTERIM DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE by Cindy Cleary, Interim District Director

Change is in the Air: A Road Map for Your Libraries ' Future 2019 marks the end of the Altadena Library District 's current Strategic Plan. Penned in 2015, the plan

focused on five key objectives for our libraries: funding, outreach, facilities , lifelong learning, and technology. Just as our libraries have grown and changed over the past five years , so has our community . It is time to update our Strategic Plan to be reflective of the current needs and interests of the community we serve.

The Libraries ' Board of Trustees formed a Strategic Planning Committee in January 2019 to begin the strategic planning process. The Committee is comprised of Board members Katie Clark and Jason Capell, as well as community members from and around Altadena. The committee 's meetings are open to the public; meeting dates are posted on the Altadena Libraries' website calendar .

A Request for Proposals process is in progress to acquire a facilitator to provide crucial guidance for collection and analysis of data from our community and our staff. Over the coming months, we will be seeking your insights and encourage you to dream with us about what our community and our libraries could be. To stay updated on the Strategic Planning progress, review the Board meeting minutes at www.altadenalibrary.org/board -materials.

The Board of Library Trustees has also initiated a Request for Proposals process for Architectural and Space Planning Services. The goal is to provide a cost -effective , phased plan that can be implemented as resources allow . Ensuring compliance at both libraries with Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and meeting health and safety standards will be given priority. A space plan and interior design of the Bob Lucas branch will also be a focus . The deadline for proposal submission is Monday, July 15 at 5:00 pm. Additional information can be found at

ii FRIENDS OF THE ALTADENA LIBRARY UPDATE by Mark Mariscal, President of the Friends of the Altadena Library

A Season of Transition & Impact For the last 2 years, I have served as President of our Friends and have been sharing my thoughts in this monthly column . Starting July 1s1, the Friends of the Altadena Library will have a new President. It has been an honor leading this organization. I will remain on the Board of Directors next year and look forward to seeing Friends at many events our Altadena Libraries organ ize.

The Friends' Annual General Membership Meeting will be Monday, June 3, starting at 7:0 0pm . I hope most of you are able to attend. The business part of the meeting should last 20 minutes. After that , you can enjoy refreshments and lively musical entertainment. The Friends will also be presenting a check to the Library District from the funds raised during this past fiscal year . Our contributions exceeded $24,000 in program support.

Our Annua l Book Sale last month was a huge success. A huge THANK YOU to the dozens for volunteers who dedicated the weekend to help us raise $6,78 5 and to get dozens of new members signed up for this year!

Bonus: We welcomed over 60 new members to the Friends at the Book Sale! What a rewarding experience to see all of the Friends' hard work pay off and turn into real impact in our libraries and community!

Volunteer Highlight: Will Many of the Altadena Libraries· volunteers have enjoyed the libraries' services since childhood and have chosen to give of their skills and time as teens and adults. Here is Will's story:

"My name is Will Oliver and I am a senior at St. Francis High School. I will be attending University of Portland in the Fall, as an English major and Psychology minor. I have really enjoyed volunteering at the Altadena Library helping to set up and tear down for events such as Second Saturdays, book sales and other events. I grew up in Altadena coming to the Main Library as a kid and have lots of great memories coming here for story time, crafts, and getting more books to read."

A big thank you to Will for helping the Altadena Libraries provide excellent programs and events for all! If you are ready to start your volunteer story at the Altadena Libraries, email [email protected].
