As the global celebrations to mark the birth bicentenary of Don Bosco come to an end, we realize with joy and gratitude that our

Institute has played a key role in many of the events. For us at DBI it has been a year of abundant blessings indeed. God has blessed us in unique and miraculous ways.

I can enumerate instances that give credence to my claim. It was nothing short of a miracle that gave us water in the month of June this year. We had made many desperate attempts at many spots in the compound and failed. Even after boring 12000 ft we found no water. We, hen, prayed earnestly and asked Don Bosco for his blessings on the endeavor. And as if to say, 'you've got to see the result yourself', we dug right before his eyes, a few feet from the spot where his statue stood. A mere 600 ft, and water…! What more can I say!

The DBIM Excellence Award 2015 was held on 4 September. This is an annual event our Management students eagerly wait for. Constituted in 2011, the award is given to management students who demonstrate excellence not only in academic pursuits but also in social commitment, extra-curricular activities and overall conduct, to such an extent that they become examples for others to emulate.

These award winners blend their studies and service so admirably, that they become champions of both. They place others' concerns before their own. They are remembered and loved by all even after passing out of the institute. Their life can be bes t desc r ibed in the words o f Swami Vivekananda: “...they only live who live for others.”

We attach considerable importance to this award because it is our way of saying that we believe not in arm-chair Managers who merely mesmerize with their razor-sharp intel lects , but in compassionate human beings who supplement their academic advantage with qualities of the heart - heart that goes out to the needy in love and concern and bring about discernible improvements in the quality of other lives.

We had our share of success with the vocational and skills training programmes too. A major success has been the overseas placements of our trainees who are now working in Europe and in the Gulf Countries, doing extremely well and earning handsome salaries. I am extremely happy that our training programmes and welfare schemes are impacting the lives of so many young people, helping them to build dreams and shape lives.

My message would be incomplete without expressing my appreciat ion and thanks to Sr. Molly Kaniampadickal and Fr. Joseph Thelekkatt who served DBI for the past five eventful years and one intense year respectively. Sr. Molly deserves our highest appreciation as she coordinated so very efficiently and effectively the RMSA Teacher Training Programmes at the institute and became very popular too with the heads of schools of both Assam and Meghalaya. She was very professional in her approach, highly committed and fully dedicated to the task assigned to her. We salute her sacrificing spirit and unflinching support.

I would like to express my deep sense of gratitude to Fr. Joseph Thelekkatt for shouldering the responsibility of Don Bosco School Excellence Mission (DBSEM) to assist our schools, raise the standard of their performance and effectiveness. We thank him specially for organizing the DB Teachers Convention-2015 at the Province level, which brought about a lot of camaraderie and cordiality among the teachers of various Don Bosco Schools and for his availability and contribution to DBI. We wish both Sr. Molly and Fr. Thelekkatt a very happy and successful ministry in their new places. May God bless them and reward them abundantly.

May Don Bosco whose birth bicentenary we celebrated this year continue to remain our model and inspiration at all times.

I consider it as a privilege and it is with great joy that I bring out this issue of INTERFACE on the great occasion of the concluding of Don Bosco's Birth Bicentenary Celebrations. The Bicentenary celebrations of this great Hero Don Bosco, a Father, a Founder, a Friend, an Educator, a Transformer, a Dreamer and a visionary, who is a model for all of us invites us to dream, to plan ,to expand our vision towards a vast horizon for a better tomorrow to be with the young and for the young.

With Robert Frost I say: “ There are miles to go ……..” and there is still much to be done to achieve, to reach the goal !. The world is longing for someone … to lead….to govern …. to guide… Yes, in fact it is …… it is crying for someone, a genuine leader, who is honest and able. Let us enable to able….. able the disable….. Yes, it is a great challenge before us … But … we can….

Let us join hands together …….

! To empower and equip our Young minds with rich human values.

! To make every effort to step together with DBI motto in “Building Dreams and Shaping Lives”.

! To create in the young compassion and love , sensitivity and humanness.

! To generate in them optimism. acceptance of self and others.

! To guide our educators to be inspirers.

! To reenergize our Salesian Charism in exercising our great task as educators.

! To deepen our awareness to the needs of the Society.

! To reach out to as many poor and the needy as possible.

! To formulate various strategies and plans to make daily assignments more effective.

! To go beyond…. a step ahead … to reach out to the peripheries and outskirts extending a helping hand.

May Don Bosco help each one of us to actualize our plans, dreams and visions . As I bring out this issue my sincere wish is that the INTERFACE may continue to upload its unique role of being an effective messenger of the manifestation of God's manifold blessings bestowed upon our Beloved Institute. DBI. The simple ordinary daily events of the Institute unfolded through the pages reflects in an extra ordinary way through the marvels of God. . May it continue to prosper and persevere to be relevant to the modern times by being effective in its vision of building up a vibrant and well informed , informative and inspiring journal.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal Praises Don Bosco’s System of Education

By Fr. Bivan R. Mukhim

Guwahati, Aug. 10. Speaking at the Don Bosco Bicentenary Educational Seminar to conclude the Bicentenary Celebration of the Birth of Don Bosco by Guwahati Province at the Machkhowa, Pragjyoti, ITA Centre for Performing Arts Union Minister for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal on Saturday, August 8, laid stress on introducing moral education and civics in the country`s educational curriculum. Besides promoting the message of love and feeling of oneness, India should be made the best place to live in and also a super power, he said. to Don Bosco during the concluding Bicentenary celebration of the Salesian Province of Guwahati.

Also underscoring the need to work unitedly for making the people of the country free from deprivation, poverty and illiteracy, he said that there cannot be any limit for a society to give education to all its members. In this context, he asserted that the country should remember every teacher who worked for enlightening the people with honour. Let these teachers be treated as next only to God, he said. The Union Minister further said. ``We should also inculcate the habit of thrift and ignite the spirit of inquisitiveness among the children. Let all of us pledge to contribute to create a better tomorrow for our children and the country as well.`` Regretting

the absence of moral education and civics in the country`s educational curriculum, he said that if the value system, tolerance and fondness for cleanliness are inculcated among the children, things would stand quite apart from what they are today. A clean environment leads to a clean mind, he said.

However, he lamented that the issue of introducing moral education is inviting a lot of opposition from various quarters. But good education should have moral education in its curriculum. ``Moreover, since by and large our people these days lack the elementary knowledge of civic science, civics should also be made a part of our curriculum,`` he said.

The Union Minister also maintained that the teachers should practice what they intend to preach and to make India a super power, they should ignite the zeal among their students to excel in whatever field they (students) desire to engage themselves professionally.

But, he said, the country needs to make all-round efforts to provide equal opportunities to all. Good education starts with equal opportunity to all and sundry. Besides, quality of education also counts, he said. An alumnus of the Don Bosco High School,

Ma tunga , Mumba i , Goya l sa id a s an educationist, Don Bosco not only brought changes in education, he had also laid stress on equal opportunities to all. The Indian freedom fighters also dreamt of equality, besides freedom from poverty and illiteracy. They also inspired brotherhood among the countrymen, said the minister.

He remembers with gratitude the great contributions of the Salesians fathers and sisters and fondly remembers the former headmasters and principals who guided him in his school days. ``I came as an alumnus of the education system of Don Bosco, a system that makes individuals self reliant, a system that provide opportunities for young people for a better tomorrow,`` he said.

Fa ther VM Thomas , Provinc ia l whi le welcoming the union minister said that he was taken up by the kind gesture of Mr. Piyush Goyal who did Don Bosco proud by his presence at the concluding programme. ``You have done us proud, we salute you,`` Fr. Thomas said.

All together 800 teachers of all the Salesian family schools of Guwahati Province took part in the Educational Seminar to conclude the Bicentenary celebration of the province.

Provincial Team Visit 2015Rev Fr.V.M.Thomas SDB, Provincial, Province of Guwahati and the Provincial Team members which included Fr. Thomas, the Province Economer and Fr.Zachary Varickasseril, the Province Secretary started a two days team visit to the Institute on May 28 - 29. During the meeting, the Provincial explained the significance of the team visit and wish that all members of the community should share concerns of the community.

In the evening, Fr. V.M. Thomas officiated the oath taking ceremony of Fr. Januarius Sangma as the new Vice Provincial of the province in the presence of the Salesians who were gathered for a meeting at the Institute. Fr. Johnson Parackal SDB, the Executive Director of the institute also took oath as the Rector of the institute for the second term.

The following day the team members joined the community and the youth for the Holy Mass at the institute's amphitheatre and later took part in the Graduation ceremony of the Holiday Package Students who were at the institute for a month. Fr. Provincial was the Chief Guest at the graduation ceremony and spoke to the young people to prepare themselves well for the future. “The future is in your hand, you can either make it or break it,” Fr. Thomas said. He distributed the certificates to the graduating students. Before lunch he addressed the staff members and encouraged them to give their best to the students. Earlier to that he asked each staff member to share the successes and the ways to improve teaching quality. He exhorted them to give 100% to the formation of the students and transform them.

Don Bosco Institute of Management solemnized the annual DBIM Excellence Award on September 03, 2015 at the picturesque campus in Kharghuli, Guwahati. The Excellence Award was constituted in 2011 to honour those students who demonstrate excellence not only in the field of academics but also in social commitment, extra-curricular activities and overall conduct, to the extent that they set examples for others to emulate.

The event began with a Prayer Dance by the DBI students, to invoke God's blessings and welcome everyone.

Prof. Dr. O.K Medhi, Retd. Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University was the Chief Guest of the function, Ms. Aitrayee Baruah, as the Guest of honour along with Fr. V. M. Being the bicentenary of Don Bosco's Birth, I had the privilege of visiting the birth place of St. John Bosco. I also participated in the International Salesian Youth Movement and visited France.

On August 07, 2015 our group consisting of 30 delegates met in Delhi Airport for the long awaited dream for Europe to take its shape. At around 10:30 am we took off for Paris. Everything seemed best at that very moment with the curiosity of how will it be visiting Europe. And with the first step in Paris everything seemed amazingly beautiful with new environment, new people, well maintained roads and infrastructure and the beauty of the city. Nothing could explain the joy of being in 'the culinary capital of the world.'

The most prominent landmark in Paris, the Eiffel Tower awaited us. It was a breathtaking experience to see a tall monument of about 1050 feet right in front of us. From the Eiffel Tower we could see the bird's eye view of the capital city Paris. After visiting the Eiffel Tower we visited various important places like the Musée du Louvre: the world's largest Museum, the Cathedrals and historical monuments like Cathédrale Not re -Dame de 'Amiens , Sacré -Coeur de Montmartre, Arc de Triopmhe with their entire rich historical heritage

As we headed towards the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes we could see the mesmerizing valleys of the countryside filled with corn fields and the greenery all around. When we reached Lourdes we could feel the immaculacy of the place with beautiful view and the presence of the Immaculate Mary. We could see thousands of pilgrims flowing in to receive blessings, experience the miraculous healing, and to feel the presence of our Blessed Lady. It was one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen and experienced.

The main purpose of the visit, the conclusion of the Bicentenary of Don Bosco's Birth cum SYM program began in Turin on the morning of 11th August. Youngsters from 152 countries gathered for the program. The motto of the SYM program was “Like Don Bosco, with the young, for the young”. Songs, noise, laughter and yells filled the atmosphere as the youngsters with cheerful faces with lots of enthusiasm and energy in groups singing songs to Don Bosco and yelling the different Don Bosco's Yells. The program began with animation and short interviews with various personalities, sharing of testimonies etc. This was followed by Holy Mass. Towards the afternoon we had to follow various itineraries to visit the places where Don Bosco stayed and worked for the young people. The evenings were colourful with Musical Night, Don Bosco Night etc. On 15th August we headed towards Castelnuovo and from there we walked to Colle Don Bosco, the place where Don Bosco was born. That night there was vigil celebration to commemorate the birth of Don Bosco. At 12 am with the ringing of the bells and bursting of crackers, the Rector Major of the Salesians sang birthday song to Don Bosco. It was followed by great rejoicing, singing and dancing. The next day, the SYM program came to an end with the Youth Mass presided by the Rector Major. The Holy Mass was followed by the fraternal meals after which the youngsters headed back to their own destinations. It was a whole new experience interacting with people from different parts of the world. I got to learn new things which in return I can teach to young people.

The following day we headed to Padua. We visited St. Anthony's Cathedral and then marched towards the “Floating City” Venice, renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture and its artwork. The city was

amazingly beautiful surrounded by water all sides. Venice seems to be city with celestial affinities. It is the city of decorated palaces, peaceful churches, momentous museums and galleries, shimmering islands and finest dwellings. It's a fairy tale city with watery avenues, gorgeous gondolas, beautiful bridges, and fantastic aromas

The last place we visited was “The Eternal City” Rome and “The Home of the Pope” Vatican City. The place was immaculately clean and beautiful. On 18th of August (Wednesday) we had the privilege of joining the audience with Pope Francis in St Peters Square. We also visited the famous Basilicas, and historical monuments like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Fontana Di Trevi, the Piazza Republica and the Pantheon. Rome is also renowned due to the incalculable immensity of its archaeological and artistic treasures, as well as for the charm of its unique traditions, the beauty of its panoramic views, and the majesty of its magnificent "villas" (parks).

On August 21 we flew back to India with fond memories which I will always cherish. It was a wonderful learning experience to have an opportunity to visit these places. It gave me access to different people from different parts of the world. It also helped me broaden my mind and think big. It helped me create an awareness of how we can improve our every little thing we do. I would like to thank the Executive Director, Rev. Fr. Johnson Parackal, who gave me the chance to be part of the delegates to the SYM program. The whole trip would not have been possible if it were not with his recommendation. Thank you Father and thank you DBI.

Student Development Program

Dr. George Kallingal, Professor Emeritus, University of Guam, USA visited Don Bosco Institute of Management (DBIM) for a day long student development program on July 13, 2015. The program conducted by Dr. George focused on the following three themes.

! Exploring the inside world: It is important to emphasize on knowing ourselves better rather than exploring the outside world.

! Maximum use of one's abilities: Failure is primarily due to the slower rate of using one's abilities. Let people do what they need to do through their strengths. We usually fail to use our abilities to the maximum because of distractions. Concentration is the key to removing distractions.

! Application oriented knowledge hunt: It is essential that students learn how to integrate knowledge gathered during MBA studies with the different aspects of life.

Besides the aforesaid, Dr. George also emphasized on the need to grow spiritually and how spirituality can increase the rate of successes.

Communication is the imparting or exchanging of information. The workshop was conducted for the purpose of providing insights into and practice for making one's communication flow. It laid special emphasis on the types of communication that are important in our lives.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Joe Rodrigues and Mrs. Brenda Rodrigues. It started with distribution of ID's to each student which had their names and a personality trait after which is followed by interactions with different classmates in a chain namely group A and B in which flow of information between the group is observed. This exercise or interaction was done to understand group dynamics and widen our perspective on the set of questions asked to us. The session has taught us that there are three types of people, namely:

1. Those who makhe things happen

2. Those who watch what is happening

3. Those who do not know what has happened

The different exercises has taught that to be the type of people who make things happen, one has to step out of comfort zones and put efforts regardless of one's conscious belief of the environment. To make things happen, one has to influence events, and to influence events one has to influence people. This can only be achieved through effective communication that will help us to create or improve relationship.

Effective communication does not only depend on words but also on voice and body language. A demonstration of a poem to present oneself as the exact character in the poem was being done

where it was found that body language plays a major role in conveying information. Therefore, hand gestures have different implications to empower, communication such as:

! Positioning of hands above our head would convey type of information which are of higher values

! Positioning of hand at chest level display confidence

! Positioning of hand below convey extreme emotions, and so on

The workshop also taught how to handle physical pressure, stress and different techniques to build up our confidence. It also included a principle of six honest serving men for communication i.e., What, Why, When, How, Where and Who. The most important of these six is 'Who you are?'

The workshop is very different from the other because Joe makes it a two way communication. Where there is a lot of interaction between Joe and the students. In this way Joe keep up the interest of the student alive and interesting.

Conclusion: Although the program was short, Joe provides the student with practical tools to develop their communication which we powerful and very effective. He also makes the student present a trail of the various techniques in front of everyone like the boys have to act like a 'Little girl' and -the girls like 'Tarzan'. The way he communicates is like sending positive vibe to the student which vibrates the energy of every student during the workshop.
