Consultancy and Creativity tools (UD 1050) / 5 ECT

Consultancy and Creativity tools In this course you will learn ins and outs of the consultancy practice from experienced consultants in the form of guest lectures and you will learn to apply the obtained knowledge and skills to a case study which will be determined. A consultant is often hired to bring in new insights and expertise that is not available in the organization hiring them. Therefore in this course also creativity tools are taught on how to come up with new ideas and insights. In particular we will draw upon the work of Edward the Bono with among others his six thinking hats, but also extensively dive into the methodology of TRIZ. Furthermore the newly developed methodology of INEFF's will be presented as another way of looking at a system and generating ideas. Obviously these tools are valuable in everything you will do in your education and future professional life, although not necessarily as a consultant. Next to the (guest) lectures a major fraction of time is dedicated to obtaining hands-on experience through teamwork on the case study.

Can we cool the Earth? (UD1052 ) / 5 ECT

Cool Down The Earth In Paris the world community agreed that global warming should not exceed 2 degrees. Since many plans have been developed to reach this goal, but the combined effect of these plans is most likely not enough. More action is needed. In this module we will develop new technologies to cool the earth, either by removing CO2 from the atmosphere, or by reflecting solar radiation back into space. This requires a ‘can do’ out-of-the-box mentality with an open eye for the social and ethical consequences. The module is open for all disciplines. You will work in multi-disciplinary teams in a contest setting.

You will understand the basics of climate change. You will understand the context of the energy transition. You will get insight into to design process of new technologies. You will learn to apply fundamental knowledge in the application domain. You will learn to think about social and ethical consequences of such technologies. You will get insight into the complexities of (international) governance.

Global Engineering (UD1051) / 3 ECT

Global Engineering Within Delft University of Technology, international technology development and research in low and middle income countries, is clustered within the TU Delft | Global Initiative. Delft Global is a community of experienced researchers and PhDs, with very diverse views on technology and its applications, let alone on the overarching theme of development. Students learn their views on and ways within this theme through a combination of activities. In meetings, guest speakers are invited (partly from Delft Global, partly others) and literature is discussed. The individual assignment is also being prepared. This assignment is designed by students themselves. Delft Global organizes monthly lunches with presentations from own researchers. Participants of this module must visit at least one of these lunches.

- Discussing - Analytical thinking - Networking - Critical thinking - Writing

Assessment is based on participation in the meetings. Students define their own project, which could be for example an essay on a topic, a series of interviews, a design, etcetera. Student scan only pass when they have visited at least two lunch meetings of the Delft Global Initiative, as shown by reflection reports.

TU Delft Q2 and Q3 A total of six scheduled meetings of 2 hours. Most probably on Wednesdays and/or Thursday evenings Other hours are self-study.

Innovation Lab; de Gelukkige Stad (UD1017) / 5 ECTS

Innovation Lab; de Gelukkige Stad Cities, the melting pots and pressure cookers of modern society work with collective solutions for their inhabitant’s basic needs. Shelter, safety and healthcare, for example, are streamlined at an urban scale. More abstract human needs, however, are surprisingly individual; it is one’s own business to live a meaningful and happy life. But as the city and neighborhood we live in, plays a huge role in what we do, who we know and where we have access to, we might have to explore happiness on a more collective and urban scale. This honoursclass is a joint project between Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam. With lectures on positive design (TUD, IDE), collective ownership (EUR, philosophy, public space (TUD, urbanism) and trust (LEI, philosophy), you see multiple perspectives on the topic. First you individually focus on your personal fascination, second you pick up a specific urban challenge in an interdisciplinary group of students.

- Analytical thinking - Collaborating - Creativity - Critical thinking - Discussing - Entrepreneurship - Networking - Presenting - Reflecting

This is a joined project between Erasmus University, Leiden University and TU Delft and gives place to a total of 24 students. The course will be given in Dutch. Next to the enrolment at [email protected], we ask for a short motivation letter with your name/study/study year/photo, sent to [email protected] before October 18th. Write in 300-500 words which challenges you see in cities and which solutions you think will promote collective happiness. Tell also something about yourself, your study and interests. The letter can be written in Dutch. More information on the course and how to apply can be found on www.gelukkigestad.nl

Develop 21st century skills Critical Thinking (UD1054) / 3 ECTS

Critical Thinking Engineering endeavours are societally-geared and form a challenging combination of scientific knowledge, technical know-how and societal facts and values. Therefore, critical thinking is an invaluable asset for engineers. This course teaches the argumentative basics any academic engineer should master to develop a broad, reflective and independent point of view about the topics of their occupations. Essential engineering decisions cannot be based on calculations only but also need sound, qualitative argumentation based on partial knowledge. This requires more than mere logical or scientific reasoning, or even ethical deliberation; it requires skilled analysis of problem and goal areas, which recognizes different stakeholder frames with various implicit and explicit assumptions, and emphasis on prevailing facts, values and conceived problems. In this course you will develop critical thinking skills by discussing theory, working in small groups on practical assignments, questioning in Socratic style and practicing argumentation in debates and discussions.
