San Francisco is a fairly small city measuring only 7 square miles. The need of a dense urban core is established in the exploration of the intrinsic to the transient environments. Four key areas were explored: Downtown, ferry building, pier 39, and the civic center. Each site proposed varying levels of possession to either the intrinsic or the transient.

The financial district of San Francisco is the downtown core full of sky scrapers. It is the hustle and bustle of the businessmen while the tourists are looking up as the buildings touch the sky. The intrinsic and the transient share the site equally.

The Ferry Building is a great landmark of San Francisco as a tourist destination as well as a working ferry stop for the bay. It holds temporary events such as the farmers market, attracting the intrinsic and the transient without preconceived notions of public to private space.

Fishermans Warf, also known as Pier 39, is definitely one of the top, if not the top, tourist attraction. The Disneyland effect on San Francisco’s waterfront is evident in the fact of the transient reigning over the area. The intrinsic avoid it like the plague, only dropping by if they work in the area. An unbalanced system between the intrinsic and the transient.

The Civic Center is quite beautiful to visit as it pronounces our countries heritage through the architecture language. The provisional visits due to the architectural typology while the intrinsic works in the area. It offers a balanced background between the provisional and the permanent.

lack of walkability

Due to the public only willing to walk a set distance off the transportation system, one is easily able to calculate a projected area of the city, harder to get to.

The Financial District proved to be the location for the exploration due to the balanced population of the provisional characteristic and the permanent attribute. It offers the best chance for success.

I want to steal. Authors, artists, and architects; I want to steal from many. The money in your wallet, the pens in your drawers, and the things on your shelves are of no interest to me. Well, maybe the books; let us be honest. Like the comedian Steven Wright once said, “To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.” While, of course, I jest, there is some truth to that.

Holden Caulfield wants to be the catcher in the rye, Mitch Album wants to know about death, and Peter Keating wants to be Howard Roark; I know what it is like. The want for something, so strong I can almost taste it. And sometimes I do. My want is not to save children from becoming phonies, nor to know what it is like after death, or even be someone I admire. Although, all truly interesting desires, my want is knowledge. I strive for it in everything I do. It sounds cliché, and I am quite sure Holden Caulfield would call me a phony for saying it. Truth be told, we have all thought about being Howard Roark, at one point or another.
