QUESTION:Which types of interconnection can I use with S7-200?

ANSWER:The S7-200 supports the following communications protocols and bus systems:

PPIThe S7-200 system protocol for communications between S7-200 components such as CPUs,TD200s, OPs and programmers is available to you. The PPI protocol permits you to operate severalmasters in the network simultaneously. You can program data communications between CPUs withjust two statements.

FREEPORTUsing the free ASCII protocol you can program user-specific communications protocols. In this wayyou can connect other devices such as printers, barcode readers, modems or PCs. You can also useit to program other protocols such as Modbus protocol (widely-used industrial bus protocol) and USS-5 protocol (protocol for MicroMaster drives). Of course, you can also use it for data communications

    between several CPUs.

PROFIBUSThe CPU215 and the CP242-8 (=PROFIBUS slave+AS interface master), each with a built-inPROFIBUS slave interface, each provide a connection option for the S7-200 to the PROFIBUS. Thisone of the most widely used neutral standard bus systems in the industry. In each case you can sendand receive up to 64 bytes to and from the S7-200 from and to a PROFIBUS master respectively. TheCPU215 and CP242-8 also permit you to set up two redundant connections to a PROFIBUS network, thus guaranteeing to a great extent failsafe operations.

MPIThe latest S7-200 CPUs can as MPI slaves exchange data with the controllers of the S7-300/400 viathe X_PUT and X_GET statements.

AS INTERFACEThis is a powerful field bus system with which you can operate many different types of actuators andsensors. A maximum bus cycle time of 5ms is guaranteed. The bus consists of a two-wire line ofprotection class IP65 (splash-proof). Using the AS INTERFACE greatly reduces wiring and assemblyoutlay. Above all, it is much easier subsequently to connect other devices. The S7-200 is connectedwith the AS Interface master module CP242-2 on which you can operate up to 31 AS Interface slaves. Each AS Interface slave can have up to 4 inputs and/or 4 outputs, i.e. at a maximum of 2 possible ASInterface masters on one S7-200 you can operate up to 496 AS Interface I/Os.
