NOVASIGHTINGS Exhibit of Schran’s Work

In his solo exhibition, "Crystalline Glazed Pottery, Recent Explorations

at Cone 6," hosted by LibertyTown Arts Workshop in Fredericksburg, William Schran presents the culmination of several years of intensive research in glaze formulation and firing schedule manipulation. The ex-hibit opens November 2 and continues through November 25. For exhibit information and directions, go online to www.libertytownarts.com or call 540-371-7255.

Schran was also honored with an invitation to show some of his recent work in "Krystallos 2007," an international all crystalline glaze show held at Campbell Art Studio, Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Only 40 artists working in crystalline glazes were invited to participate from around the world. The exhibit was declared the crystalline event of 2007.

Earlier this fall, Schran had an article published in "Pottery Making Illustrated," a national professional ceramics trade journal. The article titled: “Cone 6 Crystals: Developing Crystals at Mid Range,” de-scribed and illustrated the techniques and processes he employs in producing crystalline glazes at a lower temperature than nearly all other artists working in this medium.

Schran’s involvement in education does not stop with teaching, nor is it exclusive to NOVA. He pro-vides administrative support as assistant dean of fine arts (AN) while overseeing more than seven art exhi-bitions a year as director of the Tyler Teaching Gallery at the Alexandria Campus. He has taught ceramics at The George Washington University, Germanna Community College and The Art League in Alexandria. His workshops have also taken him across the country, as have his lectures and presentations. For informa-tion about his work or the crystalline glazing process: www.CreativeCreekArtisans.com, or contact Schran at [email protected] or 540-371-0435.

PRESIDENT’S SABBATICAL DEADLINE The President’s Sabbatical Award will allow three faculty members, one of whom can be on a 12-month

contract, to receive a semester of leave with full pay. Proposals will be awarded based on their excellence and a candidate’s potential to contribute to the long-term mission of the College. Those wishing to apply for the award for the 2008-2009 academic year will need to submit their proposal by December 1.

Proposals should be no longer than 1,000 words and specify how the sabbatical leave will uniquely benefit both the individual and the College. The proposal and a 50-word executive summary should be sent as an e-mail attachment to human resources along with NVCC form 105-100. Within a week, human re-sources will confirm that it has received the proposal. Faculty members on the personnel services commit-tee (who are not eligible for the award) will evaluate the proposals. Award recipients will present a lecture on their sabbatical experience to the College community during the year following their leave. Questions concerning this important professional development opportunity should be directed to Charles Errico (WO), chair of the personnel services committee.

Mayor of Alexandria speaks at Phi Theta Kappa Induction

The Alexandria Campus inducted 94 new members to the Tau Nu Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Inter-national Honor Society on October 25. Provost Jonathan Gueverra provided opening remarks for the ceremony, and William D. Euille, Mayor of the City of Alexandria, served as the keynote speaker. Euille focused on the responsibilities of Phi Theta Kappa members, as student leaders, to give back to their com-munity. The Tau Nu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest chapter in the state of Virginia and partici-pates in leadership and community service projects both on a local and a regional level.

Doug O’Brien, Darlene Branges, Karen Vlaskamp and Chris Soholt from Annandale’s Continuing Education ESL Department at the 28th Annual Fall Washington Area Teachers of English as a Second Lan-guage (WATESOL) Convention in Arlington.

The World Is Flat…In Korea and NOVA By John Min, dean of the business division (AL)

This article is the fifth and last in a series of five by faculty members who took part in summer international professional development experiences made possible through a special grant to promote the College’s internationalization efforts.

There are many conflicting views on the effects of globalization today. However, my trip to Korea over

the past summer validated my particular view on how globalization may be affecting our students and more importantly, how it may be shaping their education. During my trip, I attended summer school classes which were offered at one of the top-tier Korean universities, Yonsei in Seoul. To my surprise, Yonsei’s summer classes were not only taught in English but they had carefully selected instructors from the US and UK. When I asked the dean of Yonsei International Studies why they are conducting their classes in English, his response was simple. He asked, “Have you read Tom Friedman’s book, ‘The World Is Flat?’” When I asked why they invite leading foreign professors to teach their classes, the dean’s response was even more succinct. He said, “Our students will be competing with your students. We want them to be properly prepared.”

Upon my return to NOVA, I reflected on our classes which are offered to our students. I have no doubt (after this trip) that we need to internationalize our programs, offer more foreign language courses, host in-ternational faculty exchange programs and support study abroad programs in order to properly prepare our students to not only embrace globalization but compete and thrive in the 21st century.

Navajo Code Talker: Keith M. Little

Wednesday, November 7th CE Forum, Annandale Campus 3:30 p.m.

Keith Little was determined to contribute to the WWII effort after he learned about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Being 15 years old at the time, he had to wait two years to enlist and had a stranger sign for him to become a Marine. Little signed up for the code talker program and has witnessed first hand some of the fiercest fighting while helping to maintain communications with a code the Japanese couldn’t crack! Come and listen as he tells us about his story!
