Travel up to Swayambhunath Temple, set high on a hill with commanding views of the Kathmandu Valley. Visit two World Heritage listed religious sites, the Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhanath Stupa. See devotees taking ritual dips in the holy Bagmati River. (B)

Day 3 - Kathmandu - PhakdingFly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2800m), a small airstrip high above the Dudh Koshi valley. After meeting your trekking crew and sorting out gear, begin the trek by descending to Chaunrikharka and heading up the Dudh Koshi valley to Phakding. Accommodation for each night of the trek is in comfortable lodges or tea-houses. Some feature separate guest bedrooms and others are dormitory style. Simple, nutritious meals are provided by the lodge owners. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Trek to Namche (3450m) From Phakding, cross and re-cross the river on high suspension bridges. Beyond Monjo is the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park. Ascend quite steeply to Namche and along the way, if the weather is clear, catch a first glimpse of Mt Everest. Namche is the main trading village in the Khumbu and has a busy Saturday market. (B,L,D) Day 5 - Rest day in Namche Namche is tucked away between two ridges amidst the giant peaks of the Khumbu and has an abundance of lodges, tea shops and souvenir shops as well as a magnificent outlook. It is an ideal place

to spend a rest day, acclimatizing to the altitude. Options for acclimatization walks include a visit to Khunde Hospital which was set-up by Sir Edmund Hillary or a one hour walk up to the Everest View Hotel above Namche for the sunset view of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse and Everest. (B,L,D)

Day 6 - Trek to Tyanboche (3867m) Today is a spectacular day in terms of scenery. Trek along the ridge high above the Dudh Koshi then descend to the swiftly flowing river past tea houses and a village. Climb again through a forested zone where splendid views start to appear. Stone gates mark your entry to Tyanboche, and the plateau in front of its monastery is where your lodgings are located. (B,L,D)

Day 7 - Trek to Dingboche (4260m) Leave the backdrop of the Khumbu mountains and descend through

What is trekking? A trek is walking at one’s own pace along well established village trails where one can enjoy

close contact with people in remote mountain villages whose lifestyle has not changed for generations. Trekking in the clean mountain air with magnificent views of the mighty Himalayan peaks promotes a feeling of ease with nature and with oneself.

Preparing for a trek: Even on an easy trek you will be required to walk for about 5 to 6 hours daily on an uneven

terrain and therefore must be fit and used to regular exercise. A list of things to pack is provided when booking.

Lodge treks: We provide a guide and sufficient porters for the trek, and accommodation is in tea-houses

or lodges. Some feature separate guest bedrooms, others dormitories. A sleeping bag is required. Meals are provided by the lodge owners and are simple and nutritious. Soft drinks and alcohol can be purchased.

Stay the night at Dingboche surrounded by a beautiful patchwork of fields of barley, buckwheat and potatoes enclosed by stone walls. (B,L,D)

Day 8 - Rest day in Dingboche Another day to acclimatize to the altitude. There are plenty of possibilities for exploration. Day 10 - Trek to Everest Base Camp (5357m)For the trek to Everest Base Camp a very early start is required. It takes several hours on a trail across the Khumbu Glacier which weaves its way between almost translucent ice pinnacles and past seemingly bottomless crevasses. At Base Camp there will hopefully be an expedition

‘in residence’ and there are great views up into the Khumbu Icefall where there is often some climbing activity. (B,L,D)

Day 11 - Trek to Kala Patthar (5545m) and Pheriche (4243m)Rise early for the climb to Kala Patthar for a sunrise view over Mt Everest and many other peaks. Then it’s downhill for most of the day to Pheriche. Mountain yaks are common in this area and the Himalayan Rescue Association has a trekker’s aid post here which is interesting to visit. (B,L,D)

Day 12 - Trek to Tyangboche (3867m)Trek through birch and rhododendron forest to Thyangboche and its famous monastery offering splendid views of Ama Dablan, green hills and the river. (B,L,D)

14 days Bhutan

Day 1 - Arrive ParoYour guide will meet you at the airport and after time to refresh, drive up the valley to the ruins of Drukgyal Dzong. Explore the ramparts and on a clear day experience an unforgettable view of Mt. Jhomolhari. On the way back, visit Kichu Lhakhang, built in 659 A.D by the Tibetan king Srongsen Gampo. Stay overnight at the Tashi Namgay Resort. (D)

Day 2 - Paro - ThimpuA very special day, with an excursion to view the spectacular Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery. A short drive takes you to Satsam Chorten, and from there it’s a two hour walk through pine forest to the viewing point of the monastery perched on the edge of a sheer rock cliff. On return to Paro visit

the ancient watchtower that houses the National Museum, and take a short walk across a traditional cantilever bridge to one of the many archery grounds to be found in Bhutan. In the evening drive to Thimpu for an overnight stay at the Hotel Migmar. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Thimpu - Shana (2820m)Trek 5 hours/15 km, Level: EasyStarting from Drukgyel Dzong, the fortress that once guarded Paro Valley against Tibetan invaders, the first day is a pleasant walk following the left side of the Pachu River. The farm road serves as the trek route and passes through a number of very small villages with traditional houses, rice and vegetable fields to left and right of the trail. The campsite at Shana is in a beautiful open space surrounded by blue pine forest. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Shana - Soi Thangthangka (3610m)Trek 8 hours/16 km, Level: Easy, but uneven path

InterAsia Private Journeys

What is trekking? A trek is walking at one’s own

pace along well established village trails where one can enjoy close contact with people in remote mountain villages whose lifestyle has not changed for generations. Trekking in the clean mountain air with magnificent views of the mighty Himalayan peaks promotes a feeling of ease with nature and with oneself.

Preparing for a trek: Even on an easy trek you will be

required to walk for about 5 to 6 hours daily on an uneven terrain and therefore must be fit and used to regular exercise. A list of things to pack is provided when booking.

The trail continues to follow the river gradually ascending through a mixed forest of blue pine and oak and, later in the afternoon, tall rhododendron trees, birch, fir and maple. Though the trail is a rocky and bumpy path, it is not strenuous but can be muddy in rainy conditions. There are several simple wooden bridges to cross. The campsite directly faces Mt Jumolhari (7326m). The view of early morning sun striking the tip of Jumolhari is breathtaking. (B,L,D)

Day 5 - Soi Thangthangka - Jangothang (4044m) Trek 4 hours/11 km, Level: EasyToday’s trek is a short one, so a later start and a leisurely pace is possible. The Pachu River is again to the right and the trail passes through some very small villages. The area is rich in bird life. Watch for the Fire-tailed Sunbird, White throated Dipper, Yellow-billed Chough, Rosy Pipit, Snow Pigeon, Blood Pheasant, and Snow Partridge. The campsite has views of ruined Jangothang Dzong, populated by huge ravens. (B,L,D)

Page 33: InterAsia India 2013

33

Day 6 - JangothangA rest day to acclimatize to the altitude. There is an opportunity to explore the valley on some short treks and enjoy wonderful views of the mountains. (B,L,D)

Day 7 - Jangothang - Dhumzo Chhu (3808)Trek 8 hours/21 km, Level: ModerateYak herder tents and flocks of Himalayan blue sheep may be seen today, high up on the rocky slopes. The trail winds up to Bonte La, at 4890m the highest pass of the trek. Take a time to enjoy the scenery, have a snack or put up some prayer flags. From here the trail drops through a steep, narrow gully with gravel and loose rocks. Waterfalls, impressive rock cliffs and snow-covered peaks can be seen on the way to the camp at Dhumzo. (B,L,D)

Day 8 - Dhumzo Chhu - ThongbueShong (4120m) Trek 4.5 hours/11 km, Level: HardTrekking on through rhododendron, birch, and oak forests draped in moss brings you to a meadow with a huge juniper tree. Continue on through the passes at Dhunge La (4700m) and Tagulun La (4540m). Mountains in view are Jhomolhari, Jitchu Drake, Teri Kang, and in the distance Makalu, at 8463m, blocking the view to Mt Everest. (B,L,D)

Day 9 - Thongbue to Shana (2890m)Trek 5 hours/14 km, Level: EasyCross the valley through a swampy area to a clear trail climbing steeply to Thombu La (4270m). The ridge walk

from the pass is a highlight of the trek: very high above the valleys on a good trail with a beautiful view. The trail descends steeply for 2 to 3 hours till you reach the final camp on a pleasant site by the Paro Chhu. (B,L,D)

Day 10 - Shana - Thimpu (2320m)Trek 4 hours/10.5 km, Level: EasyHike for four hours through a lovely valley, finishing at Drukgyel Dzong where your transport is waiting to take you to the Hotel Migmar in Thimphu for a two night stay. (B,L,D)

Day 1 - Arrive Kathmandu You will be met at Kathmandu International airport and transferred to the Hotel Yak & Yeti for an overnight stay. (D)

Day 2 - KathmanduEmbark on a tour of Kathmandu, visiting the Great Bell, Kala Bhairab - a huge stone image of Shiva at his most fearsome, Kasthamandap - a wooden house built in the 12th century, and Kumari Bahal - home to a young living goddess. (B,L)

Day 5 - Shegar - RongbukFrom Shegar take the Everest access road which winds and climbs its way for 60 or so kilometers to the Rongbuk Monastery. Although there were probably monastic settlements in the area for several hundred years, Rongbuk Monastery was established fairly recently in 1902 by a Nyingmapa Lama. Not of great antiquity, it can at least lay claim to being the highest monastery in Tibet and thus the world, at 4980 m. There were once 500 monks and nuns living here but that number has dwindled considerably. Stay overnight in the monastery in basic but comfortable rooms heated by stoves. Simple meals are available. (B)

Day 6 - Everest Base CampDrive to Everest Base Camp from Rongbuk Monastery. The base camp is a dry, barren place, but the views of Everest more than make up for this. Have a photo taken at the base camp marker, then climb a small hill to the left for great views of the world’s highest peak. Return to Shegar for an overnight stay. (B,L,D)

The road traverses a number of high passes, the highest being Gyatso-la (5220 m). Continue on through Tingri to Shegar for an overnight stay. (B,L,D)

The land known as ‘the roof of the world’, Tibet is waiting to be explored. Entering via the ‘back door’ route from Kathmandu, the tour takes a roller coaster like route through high mountain passes

and across the highest inhabited plateau on earth, experiencing important religious and trading centres and absolutely incredible scenery, to the spiritual heart and soul of Tibetan Buddhism –

Lhasa. From here, you can conclude your tour with a flight back to Kathmandu and connecting flights home – or you can journey on into other parts of China via air or perhaps the Qinghai-Tibet

railroad, the world’s highest rail adventure.

Day 8 - Shigatse - GyantseVisit the Tashilhunpu Monastery,

former seat of the Panchen Lama. Built in 1447, the monastery once held 4000 monks. Drive on to Gyantse and visit Gyantse Kumbum and Palkhor Monastery to see the large, image covered stupa. Stay overnight at the Gyantse Hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 9 - Gyantse - LhasaOn the 270km drive to Lhasa, see grand vistas of glaciers, high mountain passes and Yamdrok Yumsto, one of the sacred lakes. Stay three nights at the Four Points Sheraton in Lhasa. (B,L,D)

Day 10 - LhasaToday will be spent visiting several of Lhasa’s many monasteries in the company of a guide and interpreter. One of these is the Sera Monastery, one of the best preserved in Tibet. Within its white-washed walls several hundred monks live and study. After lunch visit Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lama, as well as the Jokhang Temple. Pilgrims holding prayer wheels can be seen walking in a clockwise direction around this most sacred monastery. Surrounding the Jokhang is the Barkor - a maze of narrow cobbled streets which is the central market of Lhasa. (B,L,D)

Day 11 - LhasaThis morning visit the Potala Palace which dominates the city of Lhasa. A spectacular building, it contains the private quarters of the Dalai Lama as well as numerous grand state rooms and many important chapels. There has been a palace on this site since the 5th or 6th century, but the present palace was constructed in the 17th century. A visit to the Drepung Monastery this afternoon will complete a truly awe- inspiring day. Founded in the 14th century, this monastery was once the largest in the world with a population of around 10,000 monks. These days that figure is down

Whilst considerable care has been taken to compile the information in this brochure, circumstances may change to necessitate changes in itineraries and cost. Decreases in cost will be passed on to the client, and any increase must be borne by the client, notwithstanding that deposits or full monies may have already been paid. Where applicable, current pre-payable airport and departure taxes/fuel levies are included, but are subject to variation.

GROUP DEPARTURESGroup departures are subject to minimum passenger numbers and InterAsia have the right to cancel, amend, offer alternative tours, or refunds to clients should the minimum number not be attained.

PASSPORT AND VISAA valid passport is required for all international travel. You need to ensure that your passport has adequate validity to meet the entry requirements of the countries you intend to visit (or transit). Some countries require travellers to have at least six months validity remaining on their passports beyond the period of intended stay, and immigration authorities may refuse entry if you arrive with less than this. Airlines and passenger shipping lines may refuse to carry you if your passport has inadequate validity.

Booking ConditionsGENERAL HEALTH REQUIREMENTSInternational touring can involve a considerable amount of walking and stair climbing to take full advantage of the itinerary and it is important that all tour participants have a level of physical fitness that allows them to take part in all activities, without the need of assistance from others. In addition, we recommend that travellers seek advice from a medical practitioner regarding current health requirements, if any, for the countries to be visited.

SAFE TRAVEL CHARTERWe at InterAsia are committed to your travel safety through our full participation in the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade and Australian Federation of Travel Agent’s ‘Charter for Safe Travel’ initiative. We can provide you with the latest safety information on your selected holiday destinations. Official travel advice issued by DFAT is available by calling 1300 555 135 in Australia, or visiting their website www.smartraveller.gov.au - we recommend that you review this information both prior to making a booking, and prior to departure.

NOT INCLUDED IN TOUR PRICEThe tour price does not include travel insurance, passport and visa fees, excess baggage charges, gratuities, laundry, phone calls and other communication costs, drinks, meals not listed in itinerary, and all items of a personal nature.
