50th Annual Meeting: 24 to 29 October EARTH, Costa Rica

Location of the event. The University of EARTH is located on a 3,300 hateaching/demonstration farm at an altitude of 50 m above sea level. It lies ona lowland alluvial plain in the Limón provence, Costa Rica, one hour and ahalf by car from the capital of San José. Here wewill convene the 50th Annual Meeting of theInteramerican Society for Tropical Horticulture,24 to 29 October, 2004. The exuberant naturalbeauty of the humid tropics of Costa Rica willsurround the activities of the meeting, allowingus share our professional experiences and enjoythe hospitality of its people. This importantagricultural zone is characterized by theproduction of banana, pineapple, root crops andtropical ornamentals. The average temperaturesrise to 30C and the minimums drop to 20C. Therelative humidity is around 80% with an annualrainfall of 3,200 mm per year.Abstract submission. Participants whowish to submit abstracts should send themto the Secretariat no later than 15 July,2004 (See instructions to authors) alongwith the registration form.Oral presentations will be 15 min, includingtime for questions. Each section will have acoordinator and secretary to maintain the orderand time.Posters with graphs and figures cannot extendbeyond 0.9 m width and 1.2 m in length.Manuscripts. Authors of all accepted andpresented abstracts should submit the completework for publication in the Proceedings of theInteramerican Society for TropicalHorticulture indexed in CAB/Hort Abstracts.One author must be a paid member of ISTH.For publication. The written work shouldconform to the rules of publication for ISTH,and should be given to the secretariat duringthe meeting, 24 to 29 October, 2004. Eco-tourism Information

Everything that you would expectfor a tropical destination is servedup on a golden platter on CostaRica's Caribbean coast. Lushsurroundings and friendly peopleare the ultimate compliments toany traveler's vacation. Borderedby Nicaragua and Panama, theCaribbean coast spans almost 200kilometers. Tortuguero National Park:Whether it's by kayak, by boat, orhiking through forest trails,Tortuguero National Park is aperfect example of tropical rainforest. The park is made up ofmore than 18,000 hectares andprotects a wealth of exotic wildlife.You can reach Tortuguero via boatdeparting from the town of Moinor you can fly in to a handy airstripthat lies on the outskirts of town. Limón: This Caribbean town isthe perfect place to visit if you're inneed of rest and relaxation. Theresidents are open and friendly andthe town itself lends itself toexploration. Limón boasts apopulation of some 85,000 people,most of which are of Afro -Caribbean heritage. The town hasincreased in size steadily since the1970s and has proven to be a goodplace for Costa Ricans to settledown. The climate is warm andtropical, the surroundings arebeautiful and a recent influx oftour operators has brought a newfocus to the town. Limón was founded in 1870 as aport for exporting bananas andgrains. Today it continues thistradition although it is nowcomplimented by the arrival ofcruise ships. The number of parksin the immediate area makesLimón a great base point for travelup and down the coast. The hotelsvary in price, as well as in size, butall offer excellent service andhospitality. Some are perched onseaside cliffs and provide excellentviews. Visit the town's central market. The neatly organized stallsoffer everything from fruits and vegetables to clothing and shoes.If you're low on supplies or want to purchase a few handcrafteditems, you'll find it all here. There are excellent blended fruitdrinks of papaya, mango, blackberry and pineapple. You canaccompany it with an "empanada", a cheese or meat filled pastrythat is fried and served hot.

Las butacas de platea pulcramente organizadas con todo tipo de frutas yverduras e incluso ropa y zapatos. Si usted anda de bajo en suministros o quierecomprar algunos artículos hechos a mano, entonces usted lo encontrará todoaquí. Las sodas son abundantes y hacen excelentes bebidas mezcladas de frutade papaya, mango, zarzamora y piña. Usted puede acompañar eso con un"empanadas", una reposteria llena de queso o una carne que está frita y se sirvecon picante.

The Good Spoon: Afro-Caribbeans areknown for their preparation of flavorfuldishes, rich with condiments, spices andcharacteristic ingredients of Africandescent. The recipes have been handeddown from generation to generation, andeven the younger generation knows thetraditional and authentic taste of theirfoods. These recipes have traveled withthem from the lands of Africa. Some ofthe ingredients have remained the same,as they brought them along and plantedthem in the New World; otheringredients were substituted by theofferings of the new continent. To trulyknow Limón you must taste the "rondón,""patí" "rice n' beans," and drink "agua desapo" (toad water), a refreshment preparedwith lemon juice, molasses, ginger and"something more," as the Afro-Caribbeancooks tend to say when you ask them thesecrets of their recipes.

Cahuita National Park: It protects a well- developed coral reef and is one of themost visited parks on the Caribbean Coast.has been open to the public since 1970 andruns along the coast for 1,067 hectares.Over 23,000 hectares make up the marinepark including the reef system. Aside fromthe howler monkeys and sloths in thetropical humid forest, you can see angelfish and brain coral in the water.

Hitoy - Cerere Biological Reserve:If you want to get away from thecrowds and into nature and hiking,then Hitoy - Cerere is for you. Thereis no easy access to this park and itcan be described as "off the beatentrack", but once you're there, you'llbe glad of the extra effort. The parkitself is 9,050 hectares and protects awet tropical forest that is beautiful allyear round. There is no best time tosee the park since rains are onlysporadic during the dry season. Theexuberant plant life provides superbsurroundings for hiking.

La Buena Cuchara: Limon es conocidopor la preparación de deliciosos platos,ricos en condimentos y los ingredientescaracterísticos del legado Africano. Lasrecetas han sido pasadas de generaciónen generación, y aun las generacionesmas jovenes conocen el sabortradicional y auténtico de sus comidas.Estas recetas han viajado desde lastierras de Africa y algunos de susingredients son iguales y otros han sidosubstituidos por productos locales. Además delaullido de los monos y las osos perzesosoen el bosque húmedo tropical, ustedpueden ver peces ángel y el coral 'cerebro'en el agua.

No hay víade entrada fácil hacia este parque y puedeestar descrita como "fuera del" caminoprincipal, pero una vez que usted está allí,usted se alegrará del esfuerzo adicional.El parque mismo es de 9,050 hectáreas yprotege un bosque tropical humedo elcual esta bello durante todo el año. Allí nohay ninguna epoca que sea mejor que laotra ya que las lluvias son sóloesporádicas durante la estación seca. Lavida vegetal crece exhuberantemente yprovee excelente ambiente para dar largascaminatas.

Executive Secretary-Treasurer’s Report

Costa Rica – the very name evokes visions of emeraldforests and pristine tropical beaches, where howler monkeysand colorful toucans provide a playful distraction after anexhausting day of river rafting. Yet, Costa Rica also is wherethe roots of tropical horticulture, and the ISTH run deep. Onecannot separate Costa Rica from its long and distinguishedhistory with tropical ornamental, vegetable and fruithorticulture. A visit to San José with the distinguishedbotanist/horticulturist, Dr. Jorge Leon, will revealtraditional/historical knowledge of tropical horticultureunrivaled in this hemisphere. Of equal interest are theconversations with Drs. Ernesto Casseres andCarlos Enrique Fernandez, past ExecutiveSecretary-Treasurers’ of the ISTH. Theyserved the Society while with IICA in CostaRica and collectively they account for nearly acentury of agricultural experience. They speakto the very mission of the ISTH - to sow theseeds of sustainable horticulture for theimprovement and well being of the people ofTropical America. Costa Rica is a marvel of modern marketingfor conservation and eco-tourism, the canopywalks and world-class fishing are a mainstayof the global media. This October the membersof the ISTH will join the planeloads of touristsin the celebration of the wonders of CostaRica. Yet, our mission goes beyond the casualvacation. We must face the current andgrowing challenges that face Costa Rica - andindeed all of Tropical American Horticulture.Globalization of horticulture has brought manychallenges, and it has heightened the need forimmediate and long-term solutions. InOctober, on the campus of the University ofEARTH - an institution devoted to sustainableagricultural development in Tropical America -we will again gather to find innovativesolutions to the horticultural challenges aheadfor the improvement and well being of thepeople of Tropical America.

We salute our Patron and Sustainingmembers, whose uncommon generosityallows us to better conduct the businessof the ISTH.

Costa Rica es un nombre que evoca visiones de bosquesesmeralda y playas tropicales paradisíacas, donde los monos ycoloridos tucanes proporcionan una cautivadora distraccióndespués de un exhausto día de aventuras por el río. Aún, CostaRica es un lugar de raíces profundas para la horticultura tropical yISTH. No es posible separar Costa Rica de su historia con lahorticultura en ornamentales, hortalizas y frutales tropicales. Unavisita por San José con el Dr. Jorge León, distinguido botánicohorticulturista, revelará el conocimiento tradicional e histórico de lahorticultura tropical, uno de los mejores en este hemisferio. Es deigual interés poder compartir con los doctores Ernesto Cásseres y

Carlos Enrique Fernández, anteriores SecretariosTesoreros Ejecutivos de ISTH. Ellos sirvieron aISTH. Cuando trabajaban con IICA en CostaRica, explicando colectivamente por casi un siglosobre su experiencia agrícola. Ellos hablan sobrela misma misión de ISTH para sembrar semillasde horticultura sostenible para mejorar el bienestarde la gente de América tropical. Costa Rica es una maravilla para elcomercio moderno para la conservación yecoturismo, senderos ecológicos “Canopies”,pesca , son reconocidos en la prensamundialmente. Este octubre los socios deISTH se unirán con los turistas para unacelebración de las maravillas de Costa Rica.Aún, nuestra misión va más allá de unasvacaciones, tenemos el reto de los desafíoscada vez mayores para Costa Rica y para todala horticultura tropical. La globalización de lahorticultura ha traído muchos desafíos, y haincrementado la necesidad de crearsoluciones inmediatas y largo plazo. Enoctubre, en el campus de la universidad deEARTH, institución dedicada al desarrolloagrícola sostenible en América tropical, nosreuniremos una vez más para encontrarsoluciones innovadoras y contrarrestar losdesafíos horticulturales futuros.
