Young entrepreneurs need tobelieve in themselves and re-bel against conventional wis-dom, if need be. This was theadvise of Sanjiv Goenka,Chairman of RP-Sanjiv Goen-ka Group, at an interactivesession, organised by Cll hereon Thursday.

Recalling his own debutin-to the world of entrepreneur-ship, he said, at 27, muchagainst his father RPGoenka'swishes, he had broken a busi-ness relationship that con-trolled Dunlop and painstak-ingly acquired control ofCESe.

"I bought up 10 per centstake in CESCbit by bit fromthe market on borrowedmoney of Rs 40 lakh at an in-terest rate of 20 per cent.Then convinced then institu-tionallender ICICI,which had35 per cent stake in CESC,toback him to manage the com-pany," Goneka said.

He did not stop there. Aftergetting access to the manage-ment, Goenka managed to

come with a rights issue,knowing that no other exist-ing stakeholder would partic-ipate in the exercise' of thethen difficult company.

After the issue, he firmly es-tablished himself as thelargest shareholder of CESe.

He felt now opportunitieswere far more for the bud-ding entrepreneurs' and

things were to be even betterin the near future with thegrowing number of venturecapitalists and angelinvestors.

"Some of the Indians havealready made mark in entre-preneurship in global arena.In the next five years therewould be much successful in-dividuals", he added.
