5USING THE DAILY WORD PROBLEMS—MATH INTERACTIVE APPLICATIONWeekly Walk-Through

Weekly Walk-ThroughEach day students will solve word problems based on a weekly theme, such as cooking, sports, or pet care. The themes for first grade center on a different animal each week. Accurate facts about the animal are presented to make the problems more realistic. The grade-level appropriate exercises are designed to help students master a variety of math skills, including computation, time and money concepts, fractions, and graphing. You can work through the weekly lessons sequentially or choose activities based on the skills you’d like students to practice.

Developing Problem-solving Strategies

Allow students to use whatever tools they need to solve problems. Some students will choose to use manipulatives, while other will want to make drawings. Provide scratch paper as needed.

Leave enough time for students to share their solutions. Modeling a variety of problem-solving techniques makes students aware that there are different paths to the correct answer.

1. Read the problem carefully more than one time. Think about it as you read.

2. Note the important information in the problem:

• What question does the problem ask?

• What words will help you know how to solve the problem (in all, left, how many more, etc.)?

• What facts will help you answer the question? Which facts are not needed for solving the problem?

3. Think about what you need to do to solve the problem (add, subtract, multiply, or divide).

4. Solve the problem. Does your answer make sense?

5. Check your answer.

Matrix Logix PuzzlesSome of the problems for Friday in grades 3-6 are matrix logic puzzles. Here are some guidelines for helping students solve this type of logic puzzle:

• Read all the clues. Find clues that give a definite Yes or No. (For example: John plays the clarinet. Sally does not play the flute.) Mark boxes with X (for no) or YES by dragging and dropping the appropriate icon into the box.

• When you mark a box YES, mark Xs in all the other boxes in that row and in the column above and below the X.

• Go over each clue again. Look for clues that fit together to give enough information to mark a box YES or X (no).

Matrix logic puzzle lessons are presented on-screen with:

Directions Identifies the objective for solving the logic puzzle

A Matrix Grid Drag and drop either YES or X into the grid cells to solve the puzzle.

Puzzle Tips This flyout displays tips for filling in the grid. Click on the arrow to open and close the flyout as needed.
